Obviously, lists are a bunch of BS and clickbait made for people to get angry and to spark discussions on all sorts of discussion mediums.

But it's interesting to me how Mark went from #27 all the way down to #96, nobody in Rolling Stone seems to care about consistency.

I can understand moving him to #30 or something but jumping all over the place... By the way, #250 is Andy Summers! It's funny.

You’re right its just silly nonsense designed to start arguments and debate then hopefully generate sales for the magazine. MK himself has said that he hoped he dropped off that very list when he was number 27 because it was nonsense. Although I think he wants to be known as a songwriter over a guitarist.

Yes, for discovering purposes this list is nice. But the rating thing is completely bonkers. But it's addictive and serves the "purpose" well if the purpose is to start a war. Musical war, that is. If you look at Rick Beato's most popular videos, you'll see the Top 5 of his most popular videos are countdowns of "Top 20" whatever.

It's so easy to make, to watch, and to argue about lists I call it "fast food content". Here's my take on Top 5 Mark Knopfler songs:

5. Heavy Fuel
4. The Bug
3. Money For Nothing
2. Sultans Of Swing
1. Hot Dog

Wanna talk about it?

The list is clearly not very good, Mark at 96? No Mike Oldfield in the 250? really?
Knopfler, Oldfield and Gilmour is all the guitar I need.

That's far worse than MK being "only" at 96.

So many great guitar players are missing, yeah, and I'm happy for them to be honest. I wish MK would be really dropped from this list of shame.

I think what happened was, they just accidentally swapped MK with St. Vincent, so MK should've been #26, and Vincent #96.

Generally speaking, the list feels random. I guess they tried to make it feel like "numbers don't matter, you see, we even start with Andy Summers". But it's still ranking, and you've got Jimi's and King's at the top, so you can't pretend it's not about order.

If it's not about order, then don't assign freaking numbers to each musician as if they are items in an exhibition. Take a look at number 70, ladies and gentlemen, this is Django Reinhard, a guitar player who influenced a billion musicians all over the world and still is one of the most creative and skilled improvisators to ever walk on planet Earth, that's why he's at number 70.

I only scanned the top 10, I thought BB was there.

By the way, this list has been a 100% success in that it has got us speaking about Rolling Stone magazine which was the original intention. :)
