It's the final countdown! What say you AMITers?
-
I'd say, no matter what you say, but 5 songs just can't compete with the variety of the first album. If Love Over Gold would include all the songs it was supposed to have, then I would think a little, but here the winner is clearly Dire Straits (1978).
-
No matter the winner is, they're both classics even if very different. Personally I'm still hesitating. OK it's hard to compete with the variety of the first album but Love over gold features classics only so… I may skip my turn on this one ;D
-
So I finally voted Love Over Gold for sentimental reasons : it's the very first DS album that I have ever played in my CD player and Telegraph Road is the very first DS song that I have ever heard. I wouldn't type these lines without it.
So… GO Love Over Gold !! ;D

Arghh Dusty, I stupidly voted LOG thinking I was voting FOR LOG :smack. Can you edit my vote which goes to the first album please? Stupid me ;D
-
If we could only stop the poll here I think we'd all be pretty happy. I really don't know now. :think

Not necessarily my friend, DS is a fabulous album, granted but for me its LOG especially as ID is on there! Which incidentally is a particular fave...
Now, warning lights are flashing down at quality control........

Oops. I've looked but I don't think so.
Can someone who hasn't voted yet vote the other way to even it up please?

DONE. Since I couldn't decide. Nobody else has to.

I voted to eliminate Dire Straits. Although it has SOS, In the Gallery and other fan favourites, it can't compete with the musical complexity of Telegraph Road, LOG and It Never Rains.
Also, it would be great if we could have this competition for the MK solo albums.

The suggestion of a poll for MK solo albums has already been made and fingers crossed this will happen....

Wow, 15/15 tie :D

MK solo then another for soundtracks I would suggest.
I’m away this weekend so if someone else wants to start the solo one after this is finished, go for it.

Happy to start the MK Solo album poll when the DS poll finishes...

I think Phil Palmer said in his book that back in the day when things revolved around contracts with record companies you had 20 years to write your first album and 20 minutes to write the follow ups. MK has done really excellent in that regard, every album was memorable, but the first one is kinda special because it started the journey and made it all happen.
LOG is amazing composition-wise but I never liked MK's vocals on this record. Appeared weak and strained for some reason, especially evident on TR. Telegraph Road really came to life in a live circumstances with Alchemy being the ultimate version.
So my vote goes to eliminate LOG. Ha, can't believe it came to that.

My vote went to LOG for pretty much the same reason. These days I hardly ever listen to the album version of TR, because there are so many wonderful live versions, especially the one from Alchemy. Also it sounds over-produced to me. However, I do enjoy the song "Love Over Gold" and "It Never Rains".
-
Right now it's 22 to 20 in favor of the debut album. Some people have to save Love Over Gold and tie this poll again 8)

LOG had to go for me because of the same reason. I've always preferred the live versions of TR to the studio one. It doesn't get any better.

The original sound is always the original love.
LOG went a long time ago for me ;D

Same for me... LOG has terrific songs, but it's worst sounding DS Album in my opinion....

Yes :thumbsup

It seems to have gone into extra time! Shouldn't Sunday have been the cut off day? There's no day & time specified for this round.

The voting should of stopped yesterday (25/10/21) I'll get Dusty to end the poll!
So by my reckoning and by one vote the winner is.....DIRE STRAITS

Thanks KF, but the vote should have been 30 (DS) 33 (LOG) as of yesterday. ;)

How about one more day to hopefully decide the winner?

Dire Straits will always be the winner for me, whatever the outcome. :)

Personally all of the DS albums are winners for me....they have all got their own greatness

Agreed, but between the final two, LOG has been the least favourite for most of the time, therefore DS should have been the winner if it had ended on the correct day.
-
Yes indeed DS all day long as per the 30-33 score...
-
And there it is, the debut is the winner with a very slender margin!

Plot twist — Robert Marshall is Mark Knopfler's online alter ego to go undercover.

Not guilty. Seriously though, he may have some sort of mental health issue. That's the only logical conclusion.

Keep in mind he's reading all that! Personally, I'm not too interested in the guy because I can't read a single post of his to the end, because I don't understand the point he's trying to make, but what bothers me is that the website is called after a genuine company, Straitjacket Songs Ltd., what's that all about? That's like I would name my website, I don't know, willdside.co.uk

Easy. Robert is because of Bob Dylan, and Marshall because of famous guitar amps. You can come up with names like this every day, how about Bruce Gibson? Brian Turner? Martin Taylor?

We live in a time where you can write anything. Without consequence.

The world is full of crazy people. :-\

The world is full of crazy people. :-\
I remember I saw a guy who was overly affected toward MK and in an article, Mark said something like "he must be mad". So "get a life" is not just funny words, that actually more like a state of mind. I constantly see people who are probably overly affectionate toward somebody, and it's clear in this guy's work as well. With all due respect, but with this kind of argument and words I don't believe a single thing he writes. If he has a point, and he clearly does, I would find another way to put it out, rather than a simple blog article. What about a movie, a book, a song? If he's a songwriter and not Mark, where does all his music lies? Or does he still write all stuff for Mark as a ghostwriter or something? Reminds me of all the crazy stories about Shakespeare being an impostor and that somebody else was writing all his works.

I had some limited dialogue with him, as soon as he was asked for evidence he, shall we say, began behaving in a deeply inappropriate manner to the point where I had to get the police involved.
He has absolutely nothing to back up his claims and he never will. All he wants is the air of publicity.
My advice. Leave well alone and move on. There's far more interesting things to be talking about in the Knopflerverse....
