I was surprised to read on the Pieta Brown post that PC and Mike Kappus (JJ Cale's manager) were friends.
If such a relation exists between the managers, how come there's never been any MK/JJC collaboration ? :disbelief
No time ? MK has enough time to appear as guest on so many albums...
Different markets ? Different fans ? Incompatible music styles ? ::)
I used to believe that part of PC's job was to set up new collaborations. This one is obvious and nothing happens !!!
To be honest, apart from chasing video tapers I don't really know what PC is suppose to do. ;)
Unless Cale and Knopfler can't stand each other, I will never understand why the two greatest guitarists never worked together.
Did I write the two greatest ? ::)
Let's say the greatest + one of the greatest ;)
Lots of Gilmour and EC fans here ;D

Is there a good relationship between Mike Kappus and JJ Cale? ...joking.
Don't forget there's a strong relationship between Knopfler and Clapton and now
Cale and Clapton and it took Eric a while to collaborate.
I would assume that the opportunity just hasn't occurred and as Cale is the kind of chap he is
it's something that would happen naturally rather than a forced situation. They are both songwriters
so it's harder to pull each one away from there songs. But hey it happened with Tony Joe White
a similar chap so who knows hopefully some day soon!

I once read an interview with J.J. Cale (can't remember where or when) and Cale said something like: Knopfler copied so much from me - I don't why he never covered one of my songs instead... doesn't sound too nice, does it?
-
Wasn't J.J. Cale a guest at one of the Hammersmith shows in December '85? The 18th I think.
Remember also that PC has only been MK's manager for about nine years now in a relatively busy period for Mark.
-
Mark (and i believe guy too)joined JJ on stage on sept. 14th 1985.
There are pics (taken by mike kappus, as he told me himself)
-
No studio collaboration though...
Maybe it's better that nothing ever happened.
Sometimes collaborations are disappointing (like this TJW album with MK, Cale and EC).

Cale can dream, He is no Mark Knopfler ;D
-
Dude, jj is mr. Cool himself and plays some damn mean guitar. I think mk would not agree with your statement. And he is a down to earth, friendly man, nice to all his fans.
-
Personally I'm not a fan of any collaboration; they usually just interfere with Marks other works that he has in the pipeline and cause delays in releases. The only one I can really say I've remotely enjoyed is Neck & Neck and I don't even listen to that very often.
-
Neck and Neck--I haven't listened to that in a while. Thanks for the reminder. :) Need to pull it out of the file and give it a spin.

Well everything I've ever read or heard on JJ Cale (and that's way too much ;)) if he said that it must have been said in jest. I also heard him say he didn't see why people thought he sounded like him (Knopfler) and that he thought knopfler went way beyond what he does in ref to the Dire Straits days.
I think Marks pilgrimage to the US in 76 before Dire Straits formed was a lot to do with JJ Cale one visit was Bradley Barn where he recorded most of the classic early albums.
Cale is brilliant touch guitarist, songwriter, musician and studio wizard, oh and I think he can fix cars too!
-
JJ can fix cars ?
Guy can fix bicycles !
Why don't they open a garage ? ;D

-
it was definitely mark (and Guy?) joining JJ.
there used to be a tour list of jj shows, but i cannot find it anymore. may have been the 16th

I have the 18th of December - one of the Hammersmith shows. EC was there that night too.
-
nono, i once received a reply from Mike Kappus, JJ's manager, mentioning the show somewhere in south california, mid sept. mark joining JJ. that is where this pic is from.

Well, thank you for awakening this sleeper, with this fantastic photo! Two of my favorite musicians together! It is a pity JJ had left this planet, but it is never late for a tribute or even a studio wizardry, to make them meet in a song.
I guess TJW met MK while recording Tina Turner's "foreign affairs" . Anyway I believe MK's sound is unique, even to the untrained ear, while TJW and JJ, although very influential and with unique style, demand a trained ear to be recognized out of context. Both have a unique voice that is so recognizable!
And the EC and JJ collaboration isn't that bad! I adore Hard to thrill and I skip Don't cry sister, but through out it is a good record!
So, thank you for the photo! (and yes the link does not lead anywhere but the same photo)

Something about the time and place of this picture can be found here: http://www.sweetwatermusichall.com/sweetwater-tradition
It does not seem as if they played in Oakland on that tour, but nevertheless it should be from September 1985 (which also matches Mark's look and Schecter guitar)
-
Thanks Ingo!

Could that have been the Concord Pavillion? They played two nights there, the 13th and 14th of September '85 and the night of the 13th is available on two separate bootlegs!

But no bootleg from the JJ & MK night... :(
-
awesome find Ingo...
i had such a great contact with JJ's manager. then lost it.
i am sure there is more then just this picture..

But no bootleg from the JJ & MK night... :(
Of course not! We're never that lucky. :lol
-
i am pretty sure a recording exists.

i am pretty sure a recording exists.
But is it circulated?
-
what i meant is, mark must've been stupid not to have recorded that, or jj

They were young, they thought they had time...
