If the Expecting Rain updates are accurate it seems as if Bob is pulling out some surprises tonight-first 5 songs:
Leopard Skin Pill-Box Hat
Love Sick
Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
Can't Wait
Watching The River Flow
-
Not Dark Yet next.
Not sure if I believe these updates are accurate! We'll just have to wait and see.
-
If it's correct, it's a fantastic set. I love Time Out of Mind, wonderful record.
-
Waiting for Mark's set list...
LE
-
Mmm they now have High Water & Visions Of Johanna at 7 & 8. If this is true it's a remarkable set list.
-
Not Dark yet. If it were up to me He Could play the whole of time out of mind, then infidels, then love and theft and finish it off with slow train...

If so then wrong concert attended...
-
I think it's funny that's he's still playing SfA and even elected to use it to replace another song. I guess it never gets old for him. :lol
-
Sad and concerned to hear about the strapped wrist, especially when he was playing so well. Perhaps pushing himself too hard I hope not. :(
-
I bet that MK is considering that Dylan fans will be happy to listen some Dire Straits songs...
-
Am I the only one that thinks sonny liston is a bit boring/plodding to be a fixture every night. The new songs are very nice and it would be good if Mark played some others not played on the last two tours.
-
Anyone know if he had a strapped wrist
on any of the previous shows?
-
Anyone know if he had a strapped wrist
on any of the previous shows?
GF has said its just a small sprain and nothing serious.
-
I asked Guy about it and he seemed surprised that I actually noticed, but it was there, plain for all to see, in Manchester! ::)
-
Bob played just one song on the electric guitar
last night which was superb, but I can't for the
life of me remember which one. I know it was during
the first half of Bobs set.
Can anyone help?
Cheers BBB
-
During first show in Glasgow he just played his keyboard and his harmonica, the rest of the songs, he sung them standing without any instrument.
-
Thanks to Shangri la 1 post of Bobs set list with
(Bob on guitar) next to the song 'Just like Tom Thumb's Blues
My question has now been answered. :)
Cheers. BBB

As this is my 1st post on the site, I'd like to offer my thoughts on last nights show.
MK and Co, were as usual, excellent. Great to see Mark on his feet and I thought that some of the songs played were awesome. I've never heard Cleaning My Gun, rich and bluesy and Hill Farmers Blues was brilliant. All in all having seen Mark on every tour since 1991, his playing is certainly not getting any poorer and the 2 new songs were just typical MK.
However, having never seen BD, I was a bit anxious regarding all the comments about his vocal capibilities and it seems as is if maybe I heard different to others who went last night. My partner and I sat in the 3rd row of Block AB and I seriously could not understand a single word the man said virtually all night. I thought his voice was raspy at best and he shouted sometimes which did'nt help things either. His band however' were brilliant and I'm sure that we would probably would have enjoyed some of the songs more if we could have understood what he was saying. but BOTH acts got a great reception.
I guess I'm like everyone else now just looking forward to the next album and tour, lets hope it's soon.

Welcome Sultan78

What a great gig last night! Mark and the band were on top form as usual. Great choice of songs, and highlights for me Hillfarmer blues and marbletown 8) but loved the whole set including the new songs!
I also have not seen Bob Dylan live before and i agree that some of the songs i couldn't make out what BD was singing. But having said that, the whole band were unbelievable! ;D

nottingham is online on dime, and the knopfler show was recorded too and will most prolly be uploaded too...

Mark and the band are in such a great shape. It's a delight to listen to the recording from glasgow(sorry that i'm mentioning it here) just have to say. Marks playing and singing(the new songs) is so good!

Agree with you on this one. This is the most inspired playing I've heard from Mark in a long time. Lots of fine licks flying around.
I have to say though: After listening to Mark's set (Glasgow) and then to Bob's (don't know where), Mark and his music come across as more sophisticated than Bob and his, but Bob has an intensity and presence that make Mark exceedingly dull in comparison. Bob's voice is really ugly now, awful, but there's something there and in that crude harmonica playing that really touches me.
Now you can kill me :D

Hahaha ;D
The influence of Ian on drums is also great imo, e.g hill farmers blues or song for sonny, just a bit different than Danny did and I like it! You can hear and see that they're having so much fun in what they do!
-
You mention crude harmonica playing. I read somewhere this week that Bob is regarded as one of the best in the world! Actually I think the three year old boy, who lives next door to me, sounds pretty similar! ;D

been thinking something along those lines as well.
MK is playing beautifully, well crafter, and so is the whole top band, but bob, despite the voice issues, really puts in his weight..
-
Yes it seemed like that, but Bob's band has that "wall of sound" quality and also it is at an extremely high volume, including Bob's barking voice - far higher volume than MK's band and that makes a lot of difference, but I know which I prefer. I don't like to resort to earplugs at a concert. ;)
-
One has a presence...
-
...and Dylan has not...
LE
-
Mark's songs have more dynamics and subtleties... Bob's songs are all pretty much at the same volume (loud!), but it is a thrilling experience. Bob's band were great, I don't really understand why some of the flat earth society don't like Charlie Sexton - I thought he was great. And Bob's drummer was fantastic.
-
haring the first 4 bob recordings, i hear nothing of hte loudness everyone keeps talking about, i guess it is a mix of very good tapers and very bad venue acoustics??
-

whaddaya mean LE?? i mean, if there is one thing bob has imho then it is prescence onstage (and a humongous back catalogue.)
-
I will get more into detail when I have seen him this time in Oberhausen.
(I would agree that he has had a great presence, but today he has lost a lot of it, of course in my very own opinion. From the day he stopped guitar playing and started residing behind his keyboard riser, things have changed.)
However, each to his own opinion. I do not want to start a new Dylan versus Knopfler fight here. I was only astonished about the general agreement that MK suddenly should not have any stage presence, whereas people around AMIT always admired him exactly because of that (and his singing and his guitar playing and his writing of course.)
I would guess MK knows his role and keeps his performance exactly as what it is, as a supporting act, keeping a low profile. The different sound levels are just another indication for that.

But Mark has already lowered the sound level by 2010.
I remember 2005 and 2008 being painful for my ears (even with plugs) whereas 2010 was not so much.
-
bonaparte from this show sounds really fresh, i like the middle part with mark noodling away,...didn't like the song playing live for a long period, now like it again.
here Mark sings with the needed energy...

Q. What did MK say before the band started So Far Away on 10.07.85 at Wembley Arena?
A. Turn it up, turn it up! ;D
So is Guy saying that the DS techs got it wrong all these years then? ::)

I can't remember 2005 but in 08 I took my earplugs out after a couple of songs. In 2010 I didn't bother with earplugs.
-
I've never needed earplugs for an MK gig, but I certainly needed them for BD last Monday!
-
In the recording we can hear that something strange happened in Bonaparte. Mark's mic was muted on part of the song.

I think it has been mentioned that MK didnt sing and instead played guitar licks, and all the members were surprised by that. I think Isaac also mentioned that in his blog as well.
