Red Pensa from Neck & Neck cover?

John Suhr said he thinks that red Pensa was on loan. I believe it turned up at the Italian Pensa days a while back and is in the hands of a collector.

Wasn't the SG Hal's? I think he has posted it on FB recently.

Don't like it.  A bit of a messy design around the bridge I think.

Oh yes, the Tele lookalikey.  A beauty.

Reminds me he was also given a similar looking Pensa in Milan in 2005 he used on TR from there onward.  The one with ivory coloured trim.

Well, It's a different shade of blue, it has a Bigsby tremolo and it is semi-hollow ,so it will probably sound a bit different. ;D
Also note the guitar cases on the floor in that photo.

There were also at least two other red Schecters, one was a red backup that Hal used, it retained the original black pickups. The other had a rosewood fretboard and matching red headstock (it's in one of the Infidels videos). He may have leant them out or given them away though. The sunburst one had been in the hands of a friend of his for years before he recalled it for the Crossroads auction.

Mark for sure toured with SE00000 & SE00001. Neither of which were in the sale, nor have surfaced elsewhere. I would suspect he still has them. The red schecter "Strat", it was last seen in public in 2008 being played by Richard on Fish and Bird as far as I know.

SE00011 was the first serial number available to the public. Presumably, 0-10 went to Mark if they all actually exist. The MK serial number game is a bit head scratching.

Post by: ds1984 on February 05, 2024, 01:42:01 PM
I would think that Mark would not bore getting all the 11 first serials for himself.
I would guess that some went to Fender insider or Mark did offer some to friends.
But I could be wrong.

Yesterday I was asking myself about when Mark started being a serious guitar collector.
Because now he is into crazy expensive guitars but in my mind this is a turn he had taken over the years.
For many years he owned guitar in somewhat "standard" range price for a professionnal musician.

Interesting question. My first thought was that it looked like a Pensa that Mark retrieved from the auction, Lot #32, however, it's a completely different Pensa. So Mark kept it!

There's obviously still a place for the single coil pickup Pensas. He used this one for Telegraph Road on the 2013 & 2015 tours and It wasn't in the sale.

There's obviously still a place for the single coil pickup Pensas. He used this one for Telegraph Road on the 2013 & 2015 tours and It wasn't in the sale.

He actually has been using that one since GH tour, on which at a certain point he received the MK2 to be used for SoS and TR instead of the MK1.

I know he was using the redwood topped one on the Golden Heart tour ( the one he withdrew from the auction) as I saw it.  He played Sultans on the MK1 and Golden Heart on the Redwood Custom at Newcastle City Hall.
He didn't play the one in the photos above when I saw him on that tour, or on the Shangri-La tour in 2005.  The one withdrawn from the auction has a Fender style hardtail bridge, and the one in my photos has a Gibson style Bridge & stop bar tailpiece.  The first time I saw it on tour was in 2008 and I think he used it for Telegraph Road up to 2015.
This is it in 2008:

I was just saying to a friend this morning after listening to Sultans from OTN on the live box, the MK1 is terrible for that song IMO. Far too muddy.

For Sultans, he overcomplicated things for decades; the Fender was always the best choice IMO.

Dunno, Alchemy is probably the peak for me.

Most famous (Alchemy), but the sound is a bit too sharp or thin for my taste. I liked the back-to-basics Sultans after 2001, especially in 2005.

Yep, that's it.   That's two months after I saw him in Newcastle and he had dropped the Pensa MK1 in favour of a Les Paul as well. I wonder if the Pensas he kept have fatter necks, or if it's just the single coil pickups he prefers in them.

I hadn’t realised until very recently that Mark actually replaced the MK1 with the MK2 as early as during the Golden Heart tour. This is a bit nerdy I admit but I’m now trying to figure out which Pensa Mark was playing on Romeo, Sultans and Telegraph at the June 10th Copenhagen gig - my personal favourite recording from that tour. I had always assumed that I was hearing the MK1. From checking some YouTube videos it would seem that he was still using the MK1 at the start of June in Rotterdam but by the Stockholm gig on 12th June he had changed to the MK2. So that would mean that Copenhagen would be either one of the last known appearances of the MK1 or one of the first appearances of the MK2.

I really must know these important things!
