Title: Guy's gig
Post by: draad on November 15, 2008, 01:27:28 AM
Guy and his " Gary Grainger  Blues Band" are in action 28/11/08 at his local pub. Danny is on drums once again. I'll be there with a few mates and wives, staying o'night in the hotel attached to the pub. If you r going, give me a shout. Google the Inglenook Hotel at Pagham, West Sussex for more info.

Apologies but no means of recording. :(. Will take my camera though and get some pics to you - if I can work out how! Technology is problematic to me.

Went see the Gary Grainger Blues Band last night. The venue was a 16th century hotel in West Sussex. Quirky old place with low oak beemed ceilings etc. The band played in a marquee pitched at the back of the building and probably held about 150 - 200 people - standing only. Info on the band is on Guy's site. They played the setlist below:

On the road again.
Too late.
Bring it to Jerome.
This is hip.
Ain't got you.
44
Rollin' and tumblin'
Hoochie Coochie Man.
She caught the Katy.
Your funeral and my trial
Born under a bad sign
On a Saturday night
Hipshake
Going Down
Baby please don't go
Big town playboy
Crazy mixed up world.
Tore down

Great old style blues stuff for a solid 2 hours. Guy played away very quietly and studiously, and played some v good lap steel guitar. Danny was Danny - lots of faces, obviously having a great time! There was a little fella called Peter Hope-Evans playing the harmonica. Don't know anything about him but he was fantastic. It's been a v long time since I heard live harmonica - brilliant - and he seems a master.

No GF/MK/DS stuff at all, though I did hear them rehearse Song for Sonny Liston as I got to the hotel about 3hrs before the gig start. They obviously decided to leave it out.

At the end the band hung around for a few drinks and mixed with everyone. Had a little chat with Guy and with Danny, which was nice, and met Guy's kids, who are a real credit to him - very polite, gregarious, chatty and normal boys.

Got to my room at 0230 - out like a light in my four poster bed!

Have taken a bunch of photos which I'll try to get out during the week.

Thanks for the review, draad.  I was thinking about you last night at the gig.  I'm glad you had a good time and chatted with Guy and Danny.  I would have loved to have been there, but unfortunately I live too far away!

I sent Guy a little TY note on his forum page following the gig at the Inglenook and in his reply he says he recorded the show and that a CD may be in the offing.

My photos are a mess! >:( I have this hugely expensive all singing all dancing camera and clearly it can't cope with being handled by a dope!! A friend of one of my kids is a photography student and I've given the photos to him to play with. I will post them but don't expect too much!!

Also posted on Guy's forum is the next date for the GGBB at the Inglenook - 20/02/2009. A definate good night out - get there if possible. I believe they also have a gig in London before then.

What another great night! :)

My friend Dave and I met the lovely Nelly at Twickenham station about 2 hrs before the gig. We then met my son Stuart and went off to a local Indian restaurant for a meal. After that to the pub where the gig was being held. Time for a game of pool, Arthur and Dave v Nelly and Stuart. Victory for the older generation, Arthur comfortably potting a long black to seal victory! ;D

Upstairs for the gig, held in a rather tatty and run down bar room. Tiny stage. A few bar stools to sit on but mainly standing. I guess around 125 -150 max in the audience. After some beer with the curry a quick pee needed before gig start so went off to the Gents only to find it was also the band dressing room (!), and Guy and William Topley were smartening themselves up/changing shirts before going on stage. A little chat with Guy who kind of said that these little gigs were gifts for the fans and he promised I could take some photos of him with Nelly at the end of the night.

Band was Guy and Danny - let's start with the boys we know and love - Gary Grainger on lead guitar, Alan Rogan on bass, Peter Hope-Evans on harmonica and Jew's Harp, and William Topley on vocals. The set list was pretty much the one I listed from the Inglenook I think.

As I think you can picture, we were set up for a brilliant night, and so it proved to be.

Mr Topley is a man of operatic proportions - and I mean that kindly, and he has a voice to match. Deep, rich and brilliant for blues. Again the star for me was the harmonica fella - ex Medicine Head - who was fantastic. GG is a top man on the guitar and this time around there was a bit more showmanship from him, when compared to the Inglenook show. Danny and Guy were as you can imagine. A bit of lap steel guitar from Guy at one point. The band played nonstop fantastic blues for nearly two hours and left the stage to great applause. They then mingled with the audience and Nelly got her picture with Guy! A quick sprint back to the train station to catch the last train home, and back in rainy old Eastbourne at 0140 a tired and happy chappy.

I have a gazillion photos of the night, and though I say so myself, many are excellent. I had a girl from our Medical Photography Dept help me set up my camera just right - didn't want a repeat of my last attempts as a photographer! Hope to get them uploaded in next day or so.

Those of you who can travel to the Inglenook next month should make the effort to do so. It's not often you get to see and hear musicians of this quality up close and personal - and then get the chance to meet and chat to them.

Draad THANK YOU for the review, it was great to read and .............man what a wonderful time you Nelly, your friend and son had!! Also thank you for the pictures, I liked to watch!  :P

Quote: After some beer with the curry a quick pee needed before gig start so went off to the Gents only to find it was also the band dressing room (!), and Guy and William Topley were smartening themselves up/changing shirts before going on stage"

*hey psssssttttt ladies.........next time when we want to meet Guy also, we perhaps should go into the men's room too!  :o Haha imagine, most of the time at a gig ladies have to stand in a queue when they need to use the bathroom, but when Guy and Danny are nearby.........it will be busy in the men's bathroom and they will be wondering where all the "men" suddenly come from!* ;D

Uuuhhhh having said that, we have to be dressed as men, so can't wear our sexy outfit! ;D

Big change for Guy and Danny, going from playing stadiums with DS and flying in the Lear jet with MK to changing in the bogs at the blues gigs.

Good for them for not being big-headed and "slumming it" for the music.

Great pictures Arthur!

It is 9.31 pm (UK time 8.31) and that means that Guy and Danny just started their performance with the Garry Grainger Blues Band!

I envy Val and the other fans who have the possibility to be there this evening! I want to be there too, I want to sing, dance, scream, applaud, fall on my knees in front of Guy and Danny

The GGBB gig at the Inglenook on Saturday was not as it should have been.  :(

GG took to the stage but was unable to play any meaningful part in the gig. It looked for all the world like he was stoned on something, but perhaps he wasn't, and there was another explanation for his difficulties. Whatever the reason, I wish him well, because he is a mean guitarist when he is up for it, and I do hope his performance on Saturday does not spell the end for a great band that takes great music to fans in small venues.

As Gary was out of it, the other band members had to step up to the plate and give it their all. Peter Hope-Evans, William Topley, and Guy, all took the lead at various points throughout the set and Guy's son Max came on stage and played rythm guitar on the last few numbers. He was good, seemed relaxed,  and obviously enjoyed  the occassion. Well done to him!

At the end, the band members were once again happy to mix and chat with the fans. So, even though the night should have been a lot better, it was still good to have been there - and it was nice to meet Val for the first time.

Ouch, doesn't sound good.

I hope for his sake that GG was just a bit under the weather and it wasn't "sel inflicted"  ::).

Probably just as well I didn't make the trip down.  ;)

Just read Dr Fletch, seems it was "self induced" after all.  :-\

Brings to mind that comment that MK made in an interview (Q magazine maybe?) where he said that he gets really pissed off with people disrespecting their talent, not giving it their all and the rest is all "alcohol and shopping".

And of course we were just talking about Gerry Rafferty's problems, and John Martyn passed away prematurely as well...

Funny that Guy heard your comment before they started playing though Arthur! Was GG falling around onstage?

Hi everyone!  I have just returned from my short weekend at the gig, etc.

In spite of Gary being "under the weather", we had a great time at the gig.  It was a very sad sight, though, to see a great performer unable to play, or even stand up.  The band was magnificent, however, and between them, played Gary's guitar parts.  One of the stars of the show, though, was Max Fletcher, who did a wonderful opening act and played one of my favourite Dylan songs "Mr Tambourine Man" and some of his own compositions.  He then did a great job and joined the rest of the band on stage.  I feel he has a great future in music!   BTW I was absolutely mesmerised by the harmonica player, Peter Hope Evans, who was absolutely amazing!

Some of the other highlights for me were meeting Guy and Danny!  They were both so friendly and down-to-earth.  Danny came and sat at our table and had a drink with us (and some of my chips!) and actually remembered us both from Newcastle!  Guy was just as I expected, I was not disappointed!

It was also lovely to meet Arthur and his wife and friends.  It's nice to put a face to the names on the forum.  Thanks Arthur!

Dusty:  "Was GG falling around onstage?"   -   Yes, unfortunately.   :(   He was "Rollin' and Tumblin'"  LOL  :o

Val and Draad I am sorry to hear that the gig wasn't what it should have been. I read the message at Guy's forum and it is a pity that one member of the band spoiled it for the others and the fans! :o Reading the comment of Guy tells that Guy wasn't "amused" either and he is right about that, after all they do their best to have a great time playing together!  ;D It is good to hear that Max was a good guitar player and fit well in the group!

It is great that Draad and Val were able to meet, I am sure you and your partners and friends had a great time together. I also hope to meet Val and other fans again next year or even if possible earlier! ;)

I am also glad to hear that despite the stupid action of GG,  the evening was a big success. I can imagine that meeting Danny and Guy was the highlight of the evening.  ;D

Quote Rollergirl: "Doesn't "Fletch the younger" look exactly like his dad!!??"
