And the gasps and cheers which went up yesterday as Newcastle-bred Mark Knopfler made his first appearance on stage, seemed to suggest that actor Tim Healy and his fellow concert organisers had managed to keep the big secret just that
-
Sounds like a great show.
How come they can make a DVD of a small charity even pay, but a DVD of a Mark Knopfler world tour is too expensive? ???
-
I'm hoping there will be something about this on tonight's local news! :) There was nothing at lunchtime.
-
Look forward to seeing the video. The video below was from the last one in 2008.

I don't think it's because the cost is too expensive, but they want to make more profit.

Bad quality, but a glimpse of what happened! :)
-
Sounds like a great night!!!
What an amazing surprise if you were in the audience, but didn't know Knopfler was coming on.
I know i'd have soiled my under garments. ;D
Thanks for posting the news and the you tube footage.
Makes me even more excited about the tour now.
Cheers BBB

Btw. Any ideas as to the full band line up?
Was Guy there?
Also, don't know about anyone else, but i thought the sax was a bit over powering!

Unbelievable - on my doorstep - can't believe the secret didn't get out. Am gobsmacked!
-
Hi all
The band was:
Ray Laidlaw (drums - ex-Lindisfarne)
Billy Mitchell (guitar - ex-Lindisfarne)
Tom Mitchell (guitar)
Fankie Gibbon (bass)
Brendan Healy (keys)
Jamie Squires (keys)
I'm not sure who was on sax. Also, Alan Clark is usually the MD for this show, but I don't think he was there this time. I'll find out and report back....
-
same shirt again...must be his favorite..
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Or Mark is competing with GF with the shirt to see who will wear the same shirt for the longest. Get the drift?
-
Oh my, that short snippet of MFN sounded awesome! Great Les Paul sound, and some nice variations on the riff. This tour is gonna be great, can't believe it looks like I'm gonna miss it. :(
Or is he playing a sig Strat? Good sound anyway.
-
Looks like his sig strat ;)
-
Is this the same show where Why aye man was played by a geordie singer and Alan Clark played hammond?
I recall watching a video of this in youtube but can

We all know you Knuts have an eclectic music collection - and i dont mean to thread hyjack - but has any of you got any stuff from Kathryn Tickell - she was at the same event - and im wondering what style of music she creates....?
-
Schmonka, Kathryn Tickell plays Northumbrian pipes and she recently played with Sting on his latest album and shows.

Cheers Val - yes - i knew a bit about her and know she has had a few recent collaberations - just wanted to know if anyone knew her sound - I like a bit of Liam O'Flynn - and wondered how similar they were...?
-
Schmonka, I love Liam O'Flynn's music too and have all of his albums - they are really beautiful. Liam plays the Uillian pipes and Kathryn plays Northumbrian pipes, but I don't know how similar they sound. As far as I know she plays mainly Northumbrian folk music.

I WANT it (MFN) back in the setlist please! Awesome Classic!

I WANT it (MFN) back in the setlist please! Awesome Classic!
How about an acoustic version while MK sits down with is cuppa tea? It would work. He starts of in a slow sort of shuffle type way as in ECs Layla unplugged - rapturous applause follows and then he stands up, kicks the table out the way and launches into the electric intro:-)

Wow ! I'd love that very ........... much !! Hope somebody takes that cuppa tea away before MK does that. ( I'm imagining that in my head right now ! ) awesome. 8)
-
Well, they sort of did that in 2001...
-
Glad you got there first with that one Sweetsurrender - it might fend off the 'that wouldn't work' messages! ;)
For a song I am not keen on I would love to hear it played in that style. In fact I wish MK would play a lot more of his classics as acoustic versions - it certainly would be something for sure.

A star-studded spectacular featuring the cream of North East talent performing music and comedy in memory of Sammy Johnson to raise funds for the next generation of performers.
Featuring: Tim Healy, Denise Welch, Mark Knopfler, Kevin Whately, Christopher Fairbank, Timothy Spall, Alan Shearer, Brendan Healy, Billy Mitchell, Julia Tobin, Angela Lonsdale, Kathryn Tickell and many more.....
This item will be dispatched on 27th April.
It's ten years since the first Sunday for Sammy show was staged at Newcastle City Hall to celebrate the life of Geordie actor Sammy Johnson following his sudden death in 1998. Since then the bi-annual show has gained legendary status and the cast list has featured the cream of North East stage, screen and musical talent. The 2010 show featured on this DVD thrilled the sell-out audience once again and surpassed all previous productions.
Sunday for Sammy regulars Tim Healy, Kevin Whately, Christopher Fairbank, Brendan Healy and Billy Mitchell were joined by Julia Tobin (Neville's Brenda) and Corrie's Kevin Kennedy in a spectacular show jam packed with comedy and music. Timothy Spall was beamed in to join his Auf Wiedersehen Pet pals in a rollicking sketch set in Colditz Castle and Alan Shearer was on hand to give surprise guest star Mark Knopfler some advice on his music. Denise Welch was joined by Andrea McLean, Gaynor Faye, Pam Royle and Angie Lonsdale in a hilarious episode of 'Slack Lasses' and Kathryn Tickell added some authentic Northumbrian Music to the heady mix.
Also featured in the show were some of the young artistes who have benefitted from the Sammy Johnson Memorial Fund. Emily Hoile, Hayley McKay, Louise Henderson and Ruth Jenkins stunned the audience with their performances and graphically illustrated how well the Sunday for Sammy funds are invested in the stars of the future.
As usual the demand for tickets was huge and only 4,000 lucky people saw the show live. Now you can experience the magic that is Sunday for Sammy 2010 on a DVD that features over two and a half hours of fantastic entertainment from the North East's superstars of the present and the future.
75% of proceeds from the sale of this product will be donated to the Sammy Johnson Memorial Fund.

MK is pretty Funny! He tried a couple of time to play his tunes but was interupted and kicked out (pooor Mark) but he's finally a good actor hehe !
In an other hand I regret a bit because he only performs "going home"...
