You can DEFINITELY tell they are brothers - similar mannerisms, they way they look (not in the visual sense) and act....very interesting video...

DK did a good job on this one.  I wonder if MK can still play it as seductively as before.  It's one of those great DS songs.  I jsut wish the audience would have more respect to DK by being more quiet.  Thanks for the link.

He looks more interested in talking about DS/MK than the blond does.  ;D Was she even paying attention?

Thanks for the video DMG! Nice version, maybe too much "honey" in his voice, but really a nice video.
But... Mark is Mark  ;D

Yeah, the audience were bordering on the disrespectful.  One wonders just what DK was thinking, if he could hear them that is...

Such a shame that after so many years, they still can't see eye to eye :disbelief

Have to say, the Knopfler bro's sure do have a great listening voice!

I'd love to be a fly on the wall if Mark, David, David Gilmour & Danny Cummings were in a room having a disscusion.
What AMAZING eloquent English voices they all have. :)

Would still like to meet DK. He's the only orig member of DS i've still yet to meet and get the autograph of.

Cheers   BBB

DK and MK seem to be very stubborn, in my view it takes two to continue this odd relationship. But it may take only one step towards the other to clear that old conflict out. Ok, perhaps I don't know that much about their reasons and see that too simple-hearted although I went through a similar situation.

The impression that people attending a concert want to listen to the artist(s) seems to be antiquated, in 2007 I had the pleasure to be seated in front of a couple of chatterboxes. This kind of disrespect towards the artist and the rest of the audience is getting more and more common.

Anyway, I'll definitely visit a DK concert for the first time when he's en route again.

I must say that I can hardly understand the exact story he tells from 2:02 on, also because "Sultans" from the background music is quite distracting. So if
anybody could write down that special part (that lead to the imitation of Mark), I would be very grateful!

Thanks a lot!

Love this song - such great lyrics.

Yup! Such efficient use of words to create a complete and compelling mental picture. Genius at work!!

And now my conductress on the number nineteen, she was a honey
Pink toenails and hands all, dirty with the money
Greasy easy Greasy hair, easy smile
Made me feel nineteen for a while

Totally agreed.  And the guitar intro to the song was simply seductive.   :)

Agreed with Lis that this was one of the best songs ever.  :thumbsup :thumbsup

Have you noticed the few seconds of "Chinese inspired music", probably from a piano or keyboard, in the right speaker channel after Mark sings I went down ch ch uh uh chinatown? :)

It's a really great song, which captures perfectly the atmosphere and character of certain places in London and when I'm there, for example, walking down Shaftesbury Avenue or sitting on the number nineteen bus (which I have done a few times lately)  ;D, the lyric of Wild West End always goes through my mind and I think of MK!    :)

Really great, strong imagery in the lyrics.  He doesn't write stuff like this now.

I love WWE

as for the "chinatown" music, yes it's played on piano on album, 80 and 85 versions
In 78-79 this little melody was played by Mark on guitar

some thoughts about different versions of this song :

1) in the Oldfield book, it's said that on one of first DS gigs in deptford, Mark played the song "on the national".
So I wonder, did he play the song without soloing during the first months of the band ?
Indeed, on the london-roundhouse show, he's playing the rhyhtm part ; on the leeds gig no WWE, and the next show is after the album recording (chester I believe).
BUT, on the demo version there are 3 guitars, and a lead one, like on the album version, so the idea of lead licks is from july 77...

2) The versions from late 80 (specially Emerald city) are among my fav ones.
Mark is taking the time to put the ambience at the start of the song, he doesn't sart to sing at the beginning, the guitar introduction is longer, I like that

3) the BIA version...well...
I love the ambient keyboards, the sax intro (from autumn 85 I guess), the background vocals
BUT jack's solo...oh boy ! it ruined the song IHMO
I had a french itw where Jack said that Mark let him play sometimes for 80 bars... (did he count the bars ?  :disbelief :hmm)
Mark used to sit down on the side of the stage and listened to Jack's imprvosation. And after the gig, he always said to jack what he had thought of the solo (according to jack's itw) I wonder what he said to him ?.... ::)
I understand that thing to let a musician in the front of the stage, having his "glory moment" (like with John and Glenn on Marbletown now), but I never understood why Mark let Jack playing this awful solo.
Imagine if it was Mark who played the solo on the sunburst schecter strat, with a tone ala Tunnel of love... subtil etheral aerian solo, that would have been a gem I think...

David's version is good, I Like it, but not as much as DS'ones

and last but not least, there's Ingo's version  :) :

JF,  I'd love to hear those versions you mentioned.  Is it possible to put the links ?

I like Jack's guitar playing and personality on stage.  He's quite a character.

BTW, Ingo's good. What a website !!!!! Thanks.

I guess that Mark played the riff live in 1977 and January 1878 (Roundhouse...) and no lead.
I think on the album it is Mark who played the riff (on the National) and the lead, and David just the other acoustic guitar opposite to the riff.

After the album they changed it so that David played the riff and Mark the lead.

Bringing this up again. Love Wild West End, great song, great lyrics.
Haven't had time to check the videos in this topic, but will do so when I can find the time.

Anyway, as for David and Mark. I don't know much about what happened between them, other that there were problems in the past and that David stepped out of Dire Straits. But..., all these years later you'd think they would be on speaking terms again. I have no idea, if they stay in touch with each other these days....... All I can say is, whatever happened is a shame, as both brothers have an incredible musical talent.

I like Jack solo in '85, especially the one recorded at the Blossom Music Center, Cuyahoga Falls on august 5th (aka "Cleveland 85" as the venue is 30 miles from the town).
