Anyone know what this is all about? I mean the occasion etc? Dinner jackets can only mean one thing - a NHB reunion:-)
-
Seems to me it's just a couple of lucrative gigs for MK. Maybe I'll win the lottery before then. :)
-
It also means Prince Albert may be in the audience.
-
I noticed Elton John and Ray Cooper are performing early the following month. Dinner is included in the cost too so the price is not bad and the venue looks pretty special.

Cool venue. Might be a wierd atmosphere though, tucking into your foie gras and chips while MK and the band are rocking out on Sultans.

Well at least half of the guests will have to crane their necks to see the performance unless they are all to be sat at one mega-long table facing the front. Then there will be the inevitable drinks waiters in everyone's way at crucial moments. The incessant talking because there WILL be people facing each other across tables, like it or not. It will be like the Brit awards or similar. There to be seen only and not to take part. I have a feeling there will be a lot of corporate tables taken.

Les boys do cabaret
-
Les Boys will arrive there with Maserati's, Bentley's and Ferrari's ;D
-
I am actually surprised it is on offer to true MK fans as I don't think there will be many there.

Yeah. I guess Isaac will be the only one running down to the front for the encores, everybody else will be drinking their after dinner congacs. :)
-
In fact will there be anyone there for the encores? Will they not be on the verandah with their Cuban cigars playing I-Spy My Yacht whilst overlooking the harbour? :-)
-
Well this show is a bit different from the others so I guess there may be a good chance it will be used to make the live dvd, just my opinion anyways!

I would have thought for a live DVD you need a positively receptive and active/participative audience. This is going to be a sombre affair in my opinion. I would guess any live recordings will come from an enthusiastic and vocal/appreciative crowd, not one where they are all dressed as penguins:-)

One could argue it's 'Money For Nothing'

I must check to see if my tux has been cleaned :o :o

I don't know, for me there's something morally wrong about those snobbish events. Never understood why he chose to play exclusively for the Deutsche Bank last time, either. The lyrics to "My Parties" come to my mind...

I don't think it's his choice.

I do, I don't think MK gets forced to do anything these days.
I can see where goldenheart is coming from, but I can understand why MK does these lucrative shows. The tour must be very expensive to run and I wouldn't think much profit is made after the private jet and expensive hotel bills have been paid. Ticket prices are still reasonable (in Europe anyway). Events like this just help subsidise the tour for normal punters like me. :)

That is a very good point you're making. Does anyone have a clue how many seats are available at the Salle des Etoiles?
-
But in support of Goldenheart - why does MK want to play in front of an audience who are not his true fans? There cannot be much pleasure in that. The Hurlingham Club was another good example. MK could have filled any music hall in the UK even with just an acoustic set - him and his guitars, and made just as much money for the charity with almost the same amount of effort.
Maybe the publicity in these events is too good to overlook.

I would imagine that Deutsche Bank were backing the tour in some financial way & it was one of the perks of the association with MK - a bit like Tiger Woods :-[ doing a corporate day for Nike.
I would say that it was his choice though whether he did it or not, he pobably has a good relationship with some hob nob in there who more than likely asked him to do it as a political ::) favour :o

These days Tiger Woods would be doing a corporate day for Mates! :lol

Maybe its all to be filmed and included in the next james Bond film??? ;)

That sounds more like it however it would have been easier to understand if it was a full-on corporate event, invitation only. I bet the set-list isn't the same as the rest of the tour (as has already been discussed!).

Between 180 and 950 seats.
How can he make money ? maybe he has a nice percentage on champagne ;)
Indeed I'm not sure money does really matter for these two dates.
If so the prices would have been much higher.
I believe that everything, in a very large range, is MK's choice.
Especially where he wants to play and where he doesn't want to play :disbelief .
He has enough freedom, money and power.
MK decides everything except for choosing Guy's set of flashy shirts 8)
The prices as low as possible for these "high-end" events clearly indicates MK's involvement.
A promoter would have tripled the prices. :o
Nice attention but not exactly the kind of event we were expecting to fill the missing dates in the area. ???
It could be interesting though. Not as a first choice but there is no other choice . :-[

You got it!
-
MK may have some influence as to where he plays, what he does etc but it will be very minimal and will be 'Hobsons choice' (i.e. take it or leave it sort of thing) for the most of it. That is why he pays PC - to look after his tours and marketing and travel and accommodation etc. So he can concentrate on his music. It is quite possible that before he started the tour, apart from one or two venues, he couldn't name many of the places he was going to visit/play.
You can't just pick and choose where you want to play and expect the venues to be able to accommodate you when you (the artist) want. For example the tour is not going to go from one side of the USA to the next then back again and so on. It must roll, from one city to the next as much as possible to keep costs and travelling down.

Agree, Simon. But take the Royal Albert Hall: It is almost the same week, last week in May, first week in June. So Mark has probably some preferences because of family stuff etc. He can be home in London for a week then and that might be some kind of break. Other towns are always on the list, like
Hamburg, Cologne, Munich, Frankfurt in Germany f.e. When I read that the Arena in Hamburg is not sold out and that some blocks have been blocked I fear that it could be maybe the last time he plays in Hamburg.
I think this is the big secret: How much influence does MK have? He could say to PC: "Create a tour for me, the usual stuff. I will have a look when you are ready. About 90 shows, as usual. Go!"
I still have some problems with these "posh" shows MK uses to play in the last months... But of course a possible DVD (Mark Knopfler Get Lucky In Monte Carlo) would be great!

The worrying thing about a DVD from one of the 'posh' shows or the showcases is that there will be no atmosphere there. The real fans are what create the atmosphere and they will be largely missing. I am sure the band don't enjoy doing these type of shows for the same reason.
-
It is quite possible he books the Albert Hall well in advance i.e. a couple of years at least maybe. And some of the other venues too must be pencilled in before they are confirmed.
-
Good idea about the DVD (Monte Carlo/casino - like it) and the fact they play two nights means they can film both and choose the best performances.
-
No, the idea stinks. ;) Seriously, have you seen A Night in London? The audience is a joke and will hardly be better seated in bowties. Film a couple of regular shows, that's all it takes.
-
I really don't think it would be a good idea at all. These types of recordings always lack atmosphere. I much prefer the Madrid promo recording than the Hurlingham one, which seemed very stuffy and stiff. I always watch the Madrid show - more humour and the audience was great. I hope one day a proper version will emerge of the Madrid show! :)

I would LOVE the Madrid show too, but his showcase song is TR and let's face it it's not the best version he's ever played so maybe that's why they never released it. :-\
You're all criticising this show before you even know what it'll be like though, let's just wait and see - it may never happen anyway.

agree dmg..

dmg It was the Madrid 2009 promo that I was referring to, not the one with TR! I think the Spanish guys were trying to do a version including footage from Spanish TV if it was allowed! :)

Of course, I do apologise. I didn't see the word "promo" and just assumed you meant the much talked about 2001 Madrid show.
Just thinking though that the Glasgow and Newcastle shows were recorded as "back-ups" for the Madrid 2001 DVD were they not?
