Although I see the point people are making, i'm still very happy with the setlists so far. At least, although it's the bare minimum, he's changing the setlist every night, which I like. Here's hoping he continues to do so during the whole tour.

One thing that gives me some hope is also the fact that some of the US venues are pretty small (1.400 in Seattle, 1.600 last night, 3000 at Oakland and so on..). So maybe these set lists are working perfectly well at those intimate gigs. However, at the bigger halls like in Germany (Cologne, Hamburg, more
than 11.000) maybe Cleaning My Gun comes back, and maybe other stuff!

Prairie Wedding back is a positive for me... nice!
As for MK stopping to point to someone, I don't really think he should, but then again, as peole have mentioned on this forum in the past, it's his show, he can do what he wants. Whether the setlist is almost static from two years ago, that's his choice. Whether he wants to stop to show disapproval, that's his choice too. Indeed, any honest fan should know that he would prefer not to have video cameras, and therefore they should refrain.
Another thing though - it's also fair to say that a lot of people are paying a lot of money for tickets (
-
Very well put Rollergirl, I agree wholeheartedly with you.
I'm not quite in agreement with niiice1 though I'm afraid in that I don't think it's just his show but it's also the fans show too and this is unfair to those "behaving themselves" like good boys and girls! :)
-
Rollergirl put it exactly in the right words!
And to use the terms from Niiiiiiiiice1, which opinion I totally respect (and which nickname is really great ;)):
It is my choice to not buy tickets anymore for the next tour! My decision is made. These eight months between dates announcement, ticketing and the start of the tour build up extreme expectations every time. Now it seems the 2008 tour is just continued. And for the top of the iceberg is MK wearing even the same clothes than 2008... I know that is totally unimportant but hey, not for me. A show is something where something is SHOWN, and to expect some visual variety if not musical, is something I think I have the right to. Also everybody who listens to the first note of Speedway knows exactly that in 25 minutes he will have heard the last tone of Brothers because it is all exactly the same as 2005 and 2008. I posted something like this on Guy's forum this morning, and i am sure I will get an unfriendly sentence from him about the set list stuff! Sorry, Mrs. President!
To be positive, too: If I see it right, these first six shows had all different set lists. So that might be a good sign for the tour indeed! Maybe that is the
plan, to vary the set list really on every show. And if you are lucky, you get CMG, and if you are not, you have to listen to DWB or R. ... (let's hope R. is banned forever.)

I think your missing a very important thing here Love Expresso.. Of course it is an individual point of view, but I think the reason for why you (all of us actually) attended MKs concerts in the first place was because of his music.. He has never had that kind of a show has he...? Even with Dire Straits...?
When I want to see a show, I go to see whoever it is having a show.. And, when I want to listen to music, I go to concerts with people like - for instance - MK...

But I do agree 100% with you Rollergirl, about "the finger of Death"... Sad, sad story...
-
Appreciated, Tobben! Of course I do not expect him to dance and fool around like Robbie or have naked girls on stage (although... :lol)- And seeing all
these old original guitars is already some kind of show for me! A new stage set at least is what you could expect. It is a new production after all. Now setlist and even clothes are all the same. That I go to his shows for his music is something that is beyond doubt of course.
Some examples for what I meant with "show" (which I think he had, also with Dire Straits:)
Two drum/percussion sets in an awesome stage at OES tour with incredible light show "diamonds" during CE
Also that little drum kit during Sultans was a nice effect
Mark playing with the audience while the band was sitting before the MfN intro
Glen throwing a drum stick to Chad who caught it while playing Cannibals in 1996
Glen throwing the pyrobass in 2001
Chads incredible drum solo during MfN 2001
And in 1996, it WAS really great to suddenly see Guy coming up from the background with a guitar for DWB...
Mark and Richard having tea on stage in 2005...
The great "guitar panel" and its moves on stage from 2008
I know, we have the video screen now..
All the best,

I think most of you are missing important points here. All of us know who and what MK is. Nothing new here. MK doesn't try to fool anybody, but some fellow forumers try to fool themselves. We know what to expect. If you want to watch him, you do. If you don't, then don't. Don't complain. Don't buy tickets to shows you don't want to see.
1. The fans doesn't deserve anything.
2. MK is who he is. When people doesn't follow his rules, he gets mad. It's human, and it's who he is. Don't like it? Leave him and his music. I call it integrity. He doesn't wrap it all in, but show us who he is. More people should do that. Of course it's perfectly ok to stop playing when some idiot of a spectator doesn't follow the rules.
3. Who is "the fans"? Not us, anyway! We are the nerds, the anoraks, a small minority with special interests and special needs. I guess most fans are perfectly satisfied with MK, his music and the set list. Most fans doesn't listen to bootlegs, so for them it's no problem to watch similar concerts every second or third year.
3. Let's focus on how MK does perform the music he plays, not the song he doesn't play.
This is the MK I love. I don't want him to be someone else. If I felt he went in a wrong direction, I wouldn't dream of buying a ticket to one of his shows. Anyway, I listen to other music too, so when it comes to rock, glam and glitter, I turn to other artists. There's lots of other fantastic artists out there. But only one Mark Knopfler. He is different. He should be allowed to continue to be different. It's as simple as that.
-
This disturbs me a lot. Much more than the set list being very similar to last tour (so what, they are all great songs!). This is very unprofessional of him. You DO NOT stop playing in the middle of the song, no matter what. If his hair, eeeeerr head ;D was on fire, that would be a good reason to stop playing, I can't see many others. And to point at some stupid idiot who insists on filming despite the ban is not of of them.
I understand that pisses him off but he should be able to raise above that, don't you think? I bet the filmer was very proud to have got his attention, even if it's negative (just like like a kid who keeps misbehaving just to get his mum attention (while she's doing important things like writing on AMIT), he knows she'll be pissed off but he'll get her to talk to him!
I agree with that, that bevaviour is absolutly unproffesional and unrespectful for the rest of audience to do that, the venue has his own security, also MK, so if you spot someone recording and that annoys you, just wait till the song ends, go to your security boss and tell them someone is recording, I think thats smoother than stop playing and point.
-
You have some very good points there Love Expresso! :)
Anyways.. Sorry to hear that you wont buy tickets for the next tour though.. Hope the concert you will be attending during this tour turns out great for you though! :)
Best wishes
Tobben

I agree with you Mossguitar! :)

I do not understand why they allow cameras at all. It only creates problems in my opinion. After several episodes regarding different kinds of recording in 2008, it suprises me that the policy isn't changed. What is the result? Mark has to stop during "Brothers in arms" to stop people from filming. This isn't good for anyone...
-
And what's the result of this abuse of hospitality? No cameras allowed next tour. Maybe no recording equipment either. But maybe the filming fans won't come next time, because of the risk of MK playing Donegan.. So problem solved.. :P
-
I'm absolutely with you on that finger of death issue, Rollergirl, of course it was disrespectful behaviour of the person who insisted to film the concert. But MK should be acting a little more professionally in case of an emergency, ahem, when he detects a cameraman.
Regardings setlists and stuff I've to admit that I still don't care that much about hearing the same songs as in 2005 or 2008. Like in the very early days, his music has to be played live. And I enjoy every minute of it, very often I found myself closing my eyes during his shows. To me it's the music that matters, in the twinkling of an eye you get lost in the music, forget your worries and the people around you. Even with the same setlist over and over again.
Certainly I'd be happy to hear new stuff like Cleaning My Gun or some oldies from the past. Even MK likes "to play some new songs also" - just listen to the very first seconds of his speech: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SqqFeewq_8 (thanks to the uploader!)
1979 - time flies! He very often said that he tends to be quite lazy but besides that he is a perfectionist and very critical with his own work. So this could be some of the reasons for a lacking change in the setlists.
I do hope that Guy may catch him for a camera interview, perhaps he would elaborate on the process of putting a setlist together.
By the way, after visiting my first Chris Rea show, I stumbled across a lot of people complaining that his setlist is the same as in the past.
-
MossGuitar: I agree with you. You wrote exactly my feelings. ;)
And I agree with Jarle, It should have been totally forbidden to film and make recordings or it should be given permisson. Not in the middle as it is now..just creating bad moments for everyone..
-

Mossguitar, if fans (and we are all fans) that spent hard earned money on tickets...travel costs...merchandise...etc...want to voice their positive or negative criticisms of this tour, they are more than free to do so here. It's all just feedback. If you like the current tour, that's great, but perhaps it's not the best idea to tell other fans "don't complain" when this forum is about praise AND complaints.

Good news for the upcoming dates : 3 shows for the same ticket. Pieta Brown, Mark Knopfler and the Paul Crockford show ! :disbelief
No need to say I totally disapprove MK's reaction. Not professional. Nothing else to add.
Especially because we pay for the show.
If someone was yelling or anything really disturbing, I would understand a sudden stop in the middle of a song. Not in this case. :o
Very sad to see that he got back into this negative mood. I wish I had not tried to add extra shows. Maybe I should get rid of my last ticket. :disbelief
-
I don't think MK would be so keen to stop in the middle of a song if it was being televised or a radio broadcast.
I don't want to go to a concert and have the flow of a song ruined by MK stopping playing during it. I think that's disrespectful to his audience. >:(
-
Good shout from Mossguitar there. We're here to express opinions, both good and bad. And, while we do complain a bit, there's plenty of compliments.
Curiously though, he's performing on the current tour (the "Get Lucky" tour), and yet very few songs on the Get Lucky album seem to make it on to a particular night. That kind of suggests that it's not actually a Get Lucky tour at all...
With regard to the chap who was videoing the concert, there seems to be a groundswell of opinion that he shouldn't have done it (and indeed, MK shouldn't have reacted in the way he did). That said, if it subsequently appears on any torrent sites, how many people would boycott downlaoding it?
Let's hope MK continues to rotate the set list though - it's made for a lot of interesting thoughts and opinions. Love Expresso's point about 25 minutes after Speedway is very pertinent though. Whatever anyone's thoughts on all this, it seems as though it's right.
Finally, I disagree with Mossguitar's point about us not being fans. Nerds? Possibly. Anoraks? Got a chance. But not being fans? I'm not with you - a lot of us all have been fans for 30 years - it's just that with technology etc nowadays, we have a much greater chance to listen to bootlegs and other stuff. that in turn does bring extra knowledge that the "lay person" wouldn't have. I wouldn't have dreamt that a year ago I emailed Pottel, he got me reinstated on the tracker site after I cocked up, and hey presto I have so much great stuff to listen to. Is that not merely dedication to quality music from us all?!
Anyway, let's carry on moaning and laughing, but most of all, listening to MK's Pensa sing like only MK can get it to sing, the National get played like only a legend can play it, and the Les Paul rock the way we know and love...! Niiiice :-)
-
Of course everyone can express their opinions and complaints. And I think it's ok to criticize, of course. I do that myself on these pages. I was just tired of reading the same stuff from the same five persons going on and on about that they'd wish MK was another person. Like it was a scandal or something. And I feel that things got way out of proportions. That's all.
Of course we are all fans. But someone here think that they represent "THE fans'" opinion, and I don't think they do. But, of course, if I was a bootlegger, I would be a bit disappointed.
;)

So name the other four then...? :-\
There is quite a very uncourteous and harsh tone in some of your posts sometimes - and that in a personal manner in terms of other members, not in terms of the theme of the thread. I find that somehow disturbing and disrespecful I must admit. As long as I talk about set-lists, tours, sounds, songs
and DECISIONS made by MK, not about MK himself, I do not think I am in a position where I could called a person "going on and on about that (...) wish MK was another person." If I state I wish he would play more other than the usual stuff, i think that is ok and no personal offence in MK's direction. You have to stand stuff like this in a fan forum.
If someone thinks he presents "THE fans" opinion, then it is you with your post from today.

Maybe Mark should play with his eyes closed like Chris Rea does. ;) Chris wouldn't notice if all people were gone because he is so focussed on his music - that's what he said recently. To be honest I've never been to a concert with an artist who gets distracted so easily - although I totally agree that the red-light-folks (don't get it wrong ;D) don't show much respect and consideration. Hopefully Mark will not mutate into some kind of Roger Waters - we all know what he did back in Montreal 1977 :o
-
Sad to hear Mark stopped playing BIA because of a "fan" videotaping the show. Before the show, PC comes on stage to say a few words. Unfortunately a "fan" with (I guess) sh*t in his ears ruins the show for everyone. Just like the "fan" in London 2008... ::) idiots

This is what Guy had to say on his forum today:
He didn't stop playing, he pointed in a natural pause in what he was doing. The show wasn't interrupted in any way. He gets very pissed off by people blatantly filming.

that's not so bad then, I take back my harsh words about his head being on fire ;D still, I would have thought that at his age and with his experience we would be able to let it all go....

It's still not on with me. I was brought up to think that pointing at people was rude. Am I wrong? I feel he should be 100% focussed on his performance anyway and not on looking out for filmers.

I agree.
It's not his job. If he hunts the videotapers, will he ask the security guys to play guitar parts ?
Not a bad idea : we know they need one or two more guitars to play Silvertown Blues.

Let's give MK a break with this. I don't think what he did was particularly offensive. Maybe it wasn't the best thing he could do. But he was annoyed, so he reacted. We've all done things when annoyed. Surely what would be better is if the security actively looked for people making videos instead of, say, hunting down people making audio copies. MK doesn't like videos, but has a great attitude when it comes to audio. Let's be very thankful for that!
As for Guy mentioning this himself, well that was really open and honest, which we're very lucky for... it's great that they have an ear to the ground - as well as an ear for great music.
-
As Ive said before on the forum. I've seen him sing "Im an arsehole I dont care" during Why Aye Man on the last tour whilst pointing at a filmer, so buy that standard he's calmed down.
-
What confuses me is that according to Isaac's wonderful tour blog, MK spotted a video recorder at the Oakland gig and it didn't seem to bother him. Then the next night he's pointing the "finger of death". Male menopause?
Seems like if MK is in a good mood you're likely to be OK, if not you're in trouble!
So I guess the question that all potential filmers should ask themselves is (cue very bad Clint Eastwood impersonation) "Do I feel lucky, punk?"

Is it really that bad?

I think MK's vocals are gorgeous, but Tim O'Briens voice doesn't harmonize very well with MK at all. I did enjoy the song very much though.

Great show in Santa Rosa. We got there early about noon, to check on tickets. I should have hung around in a hidden spot and recorded the soundcheck. Personnel didn't seem to be bothered by people in the lobby at that time. Look at the doors into the theatre, though, and you risked getting shot. So we left, had dinner, and relaxed for a while. So onto the show.
The theatre is gorgeous and even the furthest back seats were close enough. No screen here in SR. No need for one. We were very close to the front, Row D, four back. Jeroen G and Isaac S were lucky and got front row center. SweetSurrender arrived about the same time we did, and we got to talk for quite a while.
The band came on in a storm of sound, with Border Reiver, and went into several often played numbers. A great surprise for me was how good Coyote sounds in performance. MK was happy and grinning during the song, gesturing, and having a good time. That song is meant to have sing-a-long. You just have to go along with him on "speed I do--speed I do--speed I do."
Speedway and TR are always favorites for me, and TR was powerful. I did not think that anyone would be able to replace John McCusker on Marbletown, but Mike McGoldrick gave a fantastic new interpretation for Marbletown. You couldn't even think that McCusker would have done this or that. McGoldrick's playing was unforgettable. Prairie Wedding was a good change of pace, and MK sang it with great feeling. I was impressed. Dean especially liked Hill Farmer Blues. I wasn't too happy to hear Donegan's Gone come along, but give O'Brien credit, the instrumental turned on his playing. You could forget the 'forgettable lyrics' to listen to the outro of the song. Also, live, the whole beginning sounds like the dirge it was meant to be. Very powerful. Encore numbers this time were BIA, SFA, and Piper. Big wonderful act of a 'conference' to decide to play the last encore, Piper.
The audience was loud and happy enough for a much bigger venue. Security cops practically outnumbered the audience. Rushing the stage during encores did not happen. Well, it did, bu people were shoved right back. Last encore people rushed again, and I thought they were going to e allowed, but some people called "Down in front" and wheterr it wasn't to be allowed at all, or they, or MK decided to push people back, it happened.
My husband Dean got as much enjoyment form the audience as I did from the stage. Some woman to the left of me and one row up was ,um, insane. She jumbed up and down in her seat, pounded her fists on ther thighs (I'll bet they're black and blue today) and stood up and danced at "German tarts" When she wasn't beating her thighs and dancing, whe was looking throu her opera glass. Sometimes I put my hand to the sinde of my face because she was so distracting. I missed what everone class "Mark's dance" because I was distracted too much.
I hope the band stays as enthusiastic and happy as they were in Santa Rosa. It was a great concert. I didn't chance any pics during the performance, but I gook a picture of the marquee. I'll post that.

Thank you for a great review, IrisRose!

Thank you, irisrose, for that nice, long, detailed review. I've been dying to hear more detail about some of the concerts and your review was wonderful to read. I felt like I was there -- I wish ???

Thanks indeed! Will you attend some other shows?
Better do not talk too much about being distracted by the dancing weirdo, otherwise MK and PC ban ... dancing!! ;)

I was afraid more of the security cops than MK. They were everywhere. I did take a picture of the marquee. Sweetsurrender took pictures, but I don't know if she did of the performance.
-
Irisrose I know that filming or making a video is forbidden, but people can take pictures, can't they? ::)

I think so, but no flash. I've taken photos before and have not needed a flash. The stage is bright enough that the pics come out fine. Take the policy statement from the mk.com or mknews.com site. Discretion is everything. I can't advise whether to ask permission or just do it. It depends on the security cop near you.

Hi irisrose,
The picture of us at the marquee turned out good. I need help with posting pictures. I had a few pixtures of Mk and the band, but nothig to brag about. My husband recorded more than half of the audio. It sounds pretty good.
What a great show !!

Fieneke,
Don't worry, we live in Holland. So everything that's not allowed is still allowed. Taking pictures is allowed by the management, so Heineken Music Hall will allow us too. Best thing to do is taking a small camera, put it around your neck or something, it has to be complete visible or complete invisible. Not in your bag, because then they want to check what's in your bag, that takes time and you need every second to run to the front. Better not take a bag inside, put your phone etc in your pocket then they only check the ticket and maybe will search you quickly.
Love
