Hi all,
Just gathering ideas for an ideal live compilation... what are your favourites versions of live DS/MK songs and why ? as for me, it goes that way. Thanks and cheers !
-Sultans of Swing: Wembley 85. Just love the saxophone & guitar dialogue... RAH'96 is a good contender with piano.
-R&J: On the night. The sax is a killer. RLRR one is a good alternative.
-Tunnel of Love: Munich '91. Smoother and lovelier than Alchemy with chorus and long band intros...
-Solid Rock: On the night. a bit childish, but sooo powerful and fun to watch.
-Telegraph Road: Vaison la Romaine '96. So powerful, yet less rough than Alchemy and without Paul Franklin's steel guitar
-Private Investigations: On the night. Just for the sax again
-Brothers in Arms: Mandela'88. So powerful and beautiful
-Money for Nothing: Montserrat '97 with Sting and Eric Clapton. A killer.
-Walk of Life: none. the one MK song I hate. Glad it has been removed from the set list:)
-Your Latest Trick: last OZ Sydney'86. Less formatted than On the Night.
-Why Worry: Can't decide between Wembley'85 and RLRR with Emylou.
-The Man's too strong: Wembley'85, the only one anyway, so powerful.
-Ride accross the River: Last Oz'86, such a great opener
-Calling Elvis: On the Night. Hands down.
-On Every Street: is there a choice ?
-Rudiger: London'85. So powerful and nice
-Done with Bonaparte: RLRR with Emilyou. A killer
-What It Is: not sure, live versions seem to slow and I prefer the studio version. 2001 STP tour, maybe
-Sailing to Philly: same remark
-Speedway At Nazareth: RLRR with Emylou. THE masterpiece
-Why Aye Man: 2002 version on the TRD bonus CD. Rough and powerful, plus Chris White' sax !
-Boom, Like That: Deenver 2005
-Our Shnagri-La: RLRR with Emylou. Beautiful.

Must be somewhere Pottel, I remember listening to every live version of Golden Heart available to find the most beautiful one! It took me days ;) So I am not doing that again :P

Well... I don't know when and where these Olympics took place, but I respectfully disagree with the jury. I can understand that "On the night" is criticized - some thought the OES tour to be overcommercialzed, without freshness, with too much of Paul Franklin's steel guitar, etc... but even the most radical critics aknowledge MK's outstanding guitar playing and sound on the tour ! And, to me, especially on Calling Elvis, highly powerful, with several amazing guitar solos... a bit unfair a judgement I think. My two cents.

Yes. Compare Calling Elvis on the OES tour to the album version and it's night and day. Now compare the studio album versions to todays live ones and there are no extended solos/ arrangements at all. Actually, let's not because it's quite sad really. :'(

Noo, it's one of the best MK solo's ever!!!
The solo is very fine and CE is one of my favourite song
but The sound of the On The Night version is crap imo,both the guitar and the overall sound.
It's mainly due to mixing crapness imo,not to MK, since
it's the only time CE sounds in that way during the whole 91-92 OES tour
btw this is my version of Basel 92 solo

this is the last one i found
This Project has been in the works for quite some time now, since august 2006 to be precise.
and now finally, did i find the time to make a collection.
it took me some hours to compile the txt file, and many more to compile the actual songs into a "show"
i decided to keep them in alphabetical order.
this is project in progress, pls feel free to contact me on "pottel@ish.de" to inform me about errors, issues or proposals for more versions, or songs i forgot.
i decided not to include the songs of the 2008 tour except for Devil Baby in Amsterdam 2008.03.30 and Daddy's Gone to Knoxville from the day after, for that there will be a new compilation.
i hope you will all enjoy this compilation.

For Telegraph Road - is Copenhaghen '96 better than Vaison '96 ? the latter is the best I ever heard...
Also, don't you think TOL sounds even better in 91/92 than in 85/86 ? even though to my knowledge no soundboard version is available...

Indeed. This concert contains some of the best live versions of DS-songs I've heard. So Far Away is one of the best versions of this song I've ever heard. Very well-constructed guitar-solo's. The recent versions of SFA are boring compared with this one. Guitar (Schecter Strat) sounds very fresh comparing to today's version. Sultans Of Swing is powerful, nice guitar/sax solo's. Not to mention the live-version of Man's Too Strong. Even Walk of Life is nice, short, fast and powerful, and not slow and boring as during MK's recent solo-tours.
SFA from Sydney '86 is also great. But when you watch the Sydney '86 concert you can notice that the band has been touring for a year, they sounded and looked a bit tired. Same for the second European-leg of the OES-tour. The first part of the OES-tour (aug-oct 1991) sounded much better. Band is full of energy, songs are very fresh.
The entire Mandela-gig was a highlight, with strong versions of Romeo and Brothers. It was a pity that the live-performance was shortened, during the warmup-gigs they also played Tunnel of Love and Going Home.

I'm not so sure about the first European leg of the OES tour being more energetic than the 2nd. They played a lot of new songs on that tour with a lot of new band members and early on there were quite a few mistakes that's why there are no soundboards available until later on (Woburn Abbey being the first I think). But I agree about the Sydney '86 concert being weary and think the band were at their best about '78 - '92! ;D I mean from about Sept - Dec '85.
BTW Telegraph Road was played on the BIA tour in '86 when they played the shortened version of Tunnel Of Love (I presume). You can hear the start of it on the Melbourne concert with Bob Dylan just before the bootleg stops (damn) and of course a complete version on the Christchurch boot.

TOL only on that show but maybe because of TV time restrictions. I have the "official" bootleg Thank-You Australia and New Zealand. They played both TR and TOL in Christchurch.
