Hi all,
Just came across this nice bit of info about a small tour celebrating the classic album BIA!
What I love is the fact that Chris Whitten is on drum duties :)
What do you think? http://www.theaec.net/EventDisplay.aspx?eid=1712
He. Is a another link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IO2kRMQby_0&sns=em

they really seem very into it.
and never knew Chris whitten was australian, at least he sounds like one.
by the way, anyone know why mark often would introduce Danny with the whole "aspiring drummer" story to then end with "and now he AM one"??
-
Because after all those real master drummers like for example chad cromwell, he maybe has the feeling that we do not believe in a new drummer like
DC only because he is a nice chap and who has been well known as a percussionist over the years. I always preferred Chads drumming to be honest...
Even Chris Whitten had a very good style on the OES tour, much power, much energy and also very nice dry sound. But that is only my impression.

Chris Whitten (born 26 March 1959) is a British session drummer who provided drums for the hit singles "What I Am" by Edie Brickell & New Bohemians, "World Shut your Mouth" by Julian Cope and "The Whole of the Moon" by The Waterboys. Two critically acclaimed projects in the 1990s were Paul McCartney's Flowers In The Dirt album and Dire Straits final world tour from 1991-1992 to accompany their last studio album, On Every Street.
Whitten unusually has used a Noble & Cooley drum kit which are radically designed drums. The toms and snare are single-ply, steam-bent shells which give them (especially the snare) a distinctive sound. He has also recorded with such varied musicians as Tom Jones, Johnny Cash, The Pretenders, ABC and The The.
Whitten has been an active participant and Honorary VIP Member of the Drummer Cafe community forum since 2003.

When I read this topic I thought that in the end, a video documentary about how the BIA record was made already happened, a pitty to find that its not that :(

Kind of a wierd concept, you go along to hear BiA played by people that have no association to BiA at all, except the drummer who played on a subsequent tour? I think Phil Emmanuel is Tommy Emmanuel's brother isn't he?
Whatever happened to Chris Whitten anyway? Seems he was an in demand session drummer until OES then just disappeared.

Did a bit of cyber stalking on the web, seems he's quite active on various forums.
Here's one of his posts which is relevant when considering the other thread about the "Dire Straits Legends".

Also this, seems Chris gave up touring and now composes music for TV.

Weird concept indeed.
I wonder if the Aussies will go for it. Starved of any live MK as they have been for the past couple of tours.

"Of course, someone like Mark Knopfler has earned millions for writing 'Money For Nothing', but I have no problem with that, as long as I receive some income from my compositions."
While reading this I just asked myself : could the MFN solo drum actualy being edited out of the OTN release because of credits/royalties claim for it?
-
Eh, no, that comment should be taken in the context of the wider thread about musicians being paid for compositions. Some people were saying that all music should be free, he's saying that a lot of people like him make a small living out of composing, even though a small few like MK make millions.

More of Chris' thoughts

Cool, thanks! Interesting. He seems to be a nice chap!

He is so right about Macca turning a soundcheck into a real mini concert in front of a small audience*. AND during soundcheck you can hear much stuff that won't be played during the actual concert.
Whereas for Mark, even the "credited all access VIPs" are politely asked to got out of the room when time come to soundcheck.

Thanks for all those really interesting links Dusty, I really enjoyed reading through them :)
Chris does seem like a nice chap.... looks like we have Mark to blame for his hearing loss oops ;)
-
Might get a couple of tickets for Nov 11 in Syd!!! :D
-
We should ask Chris to join us here, offer to set up a Chris Whitten sub-forum where fans can speak to him about his days with DS and the rest of his career.

When i first read about this Oz concert i thought "Oh Dear.....this sounds like it could be pretty sad"
But nostalgia is clearly a big business - and i think they are right they will get a lot of people to attend these shows and after all it may apease some of the people who write in to Dr Fletch and want more than anything for DS to reform - hey - live and let live i say!

Agreed, I look at these things in the same way as tribute bands or muisicals like Mamma Mia or We Will Rock You, not my thing at all and kind of lame to be honest, but lots of people like it so fair play to them.
-
I just saw we will rock you and although this is not what I consider "my thing" either, I was very pleasantly surprised and loved every minute of it.
So, yeah, why not? There is a market for this kind of things

Yeah, saw that on Facebook and was tginking of you when I typed it. :)
The problem I have with these things is that the songs are all about different things and they have to write a terribly contrived story to fit it all together. I took my mum to see Mamma Mia and while I love the Abba songs I thought the story was just total bollocks. The whole theatre was up and screaming though, so what do I know.
-
It all seems toe-curlingly awful to me! :disbelief I would only want the real thing, or not at all. ;)
-
I usualy don't like cover band that much either but seeing TAPFS* live was quite enjoyable, actualy their TGGITS rendition sounding even better than the one done by Floyd during the 80's and 90's.

He is also writing a lot of very unoriginal story books too and making a healthy living out of it

tggits must be my least favorite floyd song, and i like all of them, normally. .... ;-)

I have read quite a few of his novels and while some are very unoriginal and quite similar to one another, there are 2 that are really good IMHO: High Society and Chart Throb. The first one tells the story of a PM who is passing a bill trying to make all drugs legal and the second is Pop Idol and all those crappy "talent" shows from the inside. Hillarious.
(and another thread which changed course. Love it!)
