Title: best "second guitarist" solo
Post by: Pottel on October 09, 2010, 04:27:26 PM
imho the solo from Hal Lindes during one of my least popular DS songs, two young lovers, on the alchemy blue ray, really like the sound he gets there..

Hal's / Jack's solo on Two young lovers is very good imho.

Don't much like Phil Palmers solos.

A good one is also Richard Bennet on Calling elvis (in the end those short "showoffs", btw great drums by Chad. C there)

I really like Richard Bennett, for exemple in the bridge of Romeo and Juliet, in I Dug Up A Diamond in the tour with Emmylou.

Sonny Landreth in Gravy Train for A Night In London.

Richard really got to show what he could do on that 2006 tour with Emmylou, MK wisely sat back and let him play the country stuff.

Richard during GL tour for me.  The second only tour I got to experienced LIVE.  During the middle solo in speedway.  It was just incredibly awesome when the spotlight was on him.

Very nice, and the way he made his guitar roar just before, when he picked it up in Lyon (didn't notice in the other 2 I attended). Wow, so powerful! Shame you can't hear that on the Simfy!

Yes, they do sound similar.   I have that McCartney recording too - it was a great gig.  Mick Green was there too - a fine guitarist from Johnny Kidd & The Pirates.   I always feel very nostalgic when I watch it - my old stamping ground, but not quite!   ;D

Phil Palmer was a little uneven but I like his raw MFN solo on On the Night. Quite different from Mark, who always sounds a bit slick.

Summer of Love is a great track for Richard, indeed.

Must say I like Richard's solo on Pyroman as well, even though I'm critical of him at times. It's perfect on a recording from the STP tour that's on my mp3 player.

I mean I don't think they are the same, similar yes, but I would not say it's the same solo.

OK I've listened again and I see where you're coming from. The first 6 notes (repeated twice) are similar but to say that the whole solo is the same is incorrect.

But Richard is just playing the melody of Born to Run, which has been around for ages. So if anyone has copied, it's Gilmour...

Yeah his On the night MFN solo sounds problably the best (from all the MFN solos he played), but when I listen to bootlegs, especially from 1991, it doesn't sound good to my ears. He does the same thing over and over again - plays one high long note, then a bunch of quicker descending ones, and again a long note ...
