Hi, you may or may not know this interesting information about Mark's Father Erwin.
I did not know diddly squat about him and it was great stumbling (well, searching really) over an article about Erwin.
Finding out he was a great chess player was quite a surprise and also the fact he competed at championship level in the 50's. Also looking at the pics of Erwin you can tell a real resemblance obviously with the Knopfler bros but also what struck me was how he looked a bit like George Formby :)
Anyway the link is here http://www.chessscotland.com/history/knopflerphotos.htm

Sorry to be warming up this old thread again, but I thought it was better than starting a new one.
Looking at the family tree, I saw that Mark's grandparents actually emigrated to the U.S., like Erwin's sister Olga. I had no clue he had family in the United States!
Maybe that's one reason why he's always loved America so much.
Imagine Erwin had joined his parents in the U.S., then Mark would maybe have formed a band with Springsteen right from the start :lol
