Hi, haven
-
So he'll definitely be there? I only ask to be sure. Because the words MK and award show in one sentence make me suspicious ;D
-
Wow, Richard Chamberlain, the Klitschkos, AND Bochum...
sounds like a really great and posh show! :P
Not sure if I want to see MK under this circumstances...
LE
-
Hey, but it's MK, and I used to like Richard Chamberlain! I even have the Thornbirds on DVD... :o
;D ;D
Joke aside, I'm also not sure if I'd want to drive three hours just for a glimpse... Not if I have to pay the 175 EUR ;D
-
As you may have seen in Guy
-
At the APRS Presentation in November, Mark didn't perform, but I really enjoyed his acceptance speech, which was filmed! It's always good to see him receive an award! Let's hope this one will be filmed too! :)
-
Sorry to be ignorant but what is this award?
-
Would be nice if it would be filmed... not sure if it woth to travel just to hear at least one song... maybe two...arrrrfff
-
Sorry to be ignorant but what is this award?
Google maybe?
From the Steiger website via Google Translate (German -> English):
The Steiger Award
This award, created by private initiative and the desire for cultural, social and corporate promotion of the Rhine-Ruhr region, is awarded annually to individuals who are particularly in the areas of tolerance, charity, music, film, media, sports, environment and growing together the European community have been earned.
With the increase AWARD personalities from home and abroad will be honored, who feel connected to the virtues of the climber. These include linearity, openness, kindness and tolerance. The term "climber"is derived from mining operations and serves as a synonym for honesty and openness of the miners, the so-called Steiger. He is also a symbol of reliability, loyalty and cohesion in good and bad days.
On 12 March 2011 will be awarded in Bochum's Centennial Hall for the seventh time the Steiger Award.

Hi Jackal
Thanks for the reply, but to be honest I still don't get what the award is for and what the awards are about.
-
@ banjo - I know the Google Translation isn't particularly good, but you should be able to at least get the gist of what is meant, that the Steiger awards are presented to people who have made considerable contributions to the arts, music, humanitarian work, etc.
-
Ok, he could play 5:15 am then, because of the "mining" theme. THAT would be painful, I mean, if he did I wouldn't be there...
LE
-
Hmm. Will think about it. Maybe I can get a press accreditation...
-
By the way, it's on March 12, not 13:
http://www.der-steiger-award.de/
It's in German but I think you all can regognise the date ;D
-
Guitarbrother--- I will join you there I think.
Just as always. e.g. Arena Oberhausen before the gigs
;)

great!
i
-
i wonder if he will stay in the same hotel as in 2010??
(it has a nice bar :-)
-
I read somewhere that all the award winner will stay in a hotel in Dortmund. The Hotel is one of the sponsor of the event.
-
Does somebody know if Television will be there as well? That would be wonderful if it will be broadcasted for all of us! ;D
Fieneke

Heartsound, has posted this reply to her question on MarkKnopfler.com forum, about whether the award ceremony will be broadcast:
Received this answer after I've sent several mails. No broadcasting.

Just came back from Bochum and the Steiger awards.
Just after 6 p.m. a black BMW appeared and MK came out.
Smiling and very quickly directing to the waiting fans outside.
Maybe there were 50 Rudigers outside or so.
He took his time and gave every autograph.
He looked good and relaxed.
Somebody asked: What's the name of the new album?
MK: Ahhh, I don't know yet. Still working on it now.
After he signed for us we wanted to take a photo with him but MK answered that he has to go inside now.
Then he went inside after maybe 7 minutes of signing.
Pete was also there, always taking care of MK...
I did not see his family. Maybe they weren't there or used the back doors. Who knows.
I think MK and Pete were alone.
Nice to see the Man again.
Rock on Mark

This is a mood spoiler, please don't read if you are not up to such a thing.
You know what's weird? The fact that they give awards to people, is always a strange thing in times of peace. I mean for men that have excelled and fame and fortune have been generous to them, an award is just a waste of time and energy. Leave alone the obligation to go and deliver it, so that they won't insult anybody. What i mean is that the ones that are helped by an award (the Nobel gives money to promote a research, the Oscar gives an extra boost and that means more tickets, a Grammy more sales - you get the picture...), are understandable, but the rest are a bit odd. You get an award for being great? I really don't get it. The award itself and the institution that gives it away, is getting so much more that the awarded... Sorry for being so harsh, but seeing people lose their lives and homes, is way too much a contrast to all these awards. Maybe we should be looking behind the obvious, not as seekers of conspiracy theories but as concerned citizens of the same planet. And if natural catastrophes like the gigantic earthquake in Japan is something we can not predict or avoid, maybe the stripping of the wealth of some countries, by other countries should be something we should not pass by as common knowledge. Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Bahrain, Tunisia, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy, the U.K. and many other countries are going through severe social turmoil, caused mainly by GREED. Don't be surprised if things get out of hand and the domino theory proven right. If a castle can be blown down by a strong wind then it is no castle. The sad thing is that the greedy always get away with it. Only the weak pay.
It is strange that they give awards. The hard working man never gets any. And the dead ones don't need them. Just some thoughts on a very dark night. Sorry for spoiling the mood.

-
I've just woke up ! how great to visit the forum with such nice pics thank uuu!!
-
Fantastic video :)
Mark seems to be in a good mood :)
-
GReat video, thanks for sharing. Seems like he had all the time to give away some autographs?
Mostly at concerts he won't take this long a time to sign.
Maybe he is in such a good mood because of his new album.
Anyway great to see him even it's on video.
-
Lol, is that Mark giving Hayden Panettiere an admiring look? :lol Nice one Mark ;D
-
Damnit, I knew I should have gone there. Didn't even bother to get a press accreditation anymore because I had so many other things to do... And was just tired after last week... So I went to the movies last night, not to Bochum. Oh, I'm getting old :disbelief :disbelief :disbelief

I just continue to see the video over and over again. It makes me very happy to see him in such a good mood, signing for everyone. Thanks for sharing, superval99. To me that clip is worth an Oscar :)
-
I definitely love Suits!! Next tour the band must wear suits :lol
-
Knopflerized -- no no no no no!!!
Sure, he looks wonderful in a suit, but I want him and the band to be relaxed and having fun when they present us with their concerts.
-
Knopfling i'm kidding, of course I like them relaxed but.... sometime it's pretty nice to see them in suits
-
Well he will choose the washed out floral pattern shirt for the next tour again, anyway ;D
-
Well he will choose the washed out floral pattern shirt for the next tour again, anyway ;D
Well that's what makes him so lovable! ;D
-
Men always look good in suits, especially as we get older. :)
Seems the best way to get an autograph these days is at a "special event" like this, or the award that he got in Newcastle, or Hay on Wye. No chance at an "ordinary" gig these days. :-\
-
Great Youtube clip. Thanks for posting.
I hope Marks back problem has completely cleared up now, as it would be great to see him standing again for the next tour. :)
Cheers BBB
-
Maybe he was in a good and generous mood because his back is all better, and there wasn't pressure on him, as in the middle of a tour. He looked great. I haven't watched the video yet, but I will! Thanks val and ustas for the fantastic pictures. He does look great in a suit. In fact, this may be one of the few times I've seen him with a tie, other than the tuxedo type events.
-
Thanks alot, that is a great video. Nice to see MK interacting with his fans. I like the bit when a fan is waving a vinyl version of communique to be signed. Sadly his most underplayed album which I think is one of his best.
-
thank you for all!!
Mark looks good : )
-
Thank you everyone for the wonderful photos & video. It's so good to see him. He looks fantastic. :P
-
Does anybody know if there was a speech by MK, or what he said when receiving the award? It seems nobody from the "fan-side" was really inside the venue? Would be a pity...

But if no live music was performed no big deal about it?

I've never noticed that Mark is left-handed...maybe only when he writes?
Great pics and video, thanks! :)
