My name is Kay Edvin and I am 30 years old.
I am from Norway.
I have been to all the MK concerts in Norway since 2000.
From 2003 I formed the Norwegian MK fanclub together with Elin. The last years Jarle has joined me and we are working well together trying to give the Norwegian MK fans what they want to know about MK through our website, www.mknorge.com
Now I am saving money for the next tour and my dream is to meet you guys, maybe in RAH?
It would have been fantastic to have a meeting there!
-
Hi, I am from Northern Germany!
I am not 40 yet ( :disbelief) and started thinking about the (hopefully) next years' tour, too!
To take your example: I did not miss a single MK show in Hamburg since 1996, been to Munich several times since 1991, and 2010 I was at the RAH for the first time! But soon I learned that one show at that fabulous place is not enough. So I will attend at least two or three over there, and hopefully there will be a big fan meeting! Maybe we should start a thread early where everybody is able to check soon the possibilites to go there! Most of the forumers around I have never met, and I would love to see them all!

I am over 40 (just), I am the President and I come from... well, that's a complicated question. I am from the UNN (United Nations of Nat).
I have seen DS/MK in Paris, Nimes (France) in 1992, Copenhagen (Denmark) in 2005, 2006, 2008, Augustenborg-(Denmark) in 2008, Helsingborg (Sweden) in 2010 Lyon and Nimes (France) in 2010
Next time I hope to travel a bit and meet some of you... London and the RAH sound very tempting.
-
My name is Jarle. I am 24 years old, and have been addicted to Mark Knopfler since around 2000 or so. I have seen him live seven times since 2001, which of course is just a beginning :) I would love to meet all you in the future. Maybe RAH in 2012? Let's see :)

Hi, I'm still from Oslo, Norway, living in Moss, Norway. 39 years old.
I've been an MK addict since 1985/86, seen him 10 times or so in Oslo, nowhere else.
I got to know some of you through TK's fan forum in the late 90's, hung out there for ten years or so, and left together with the others that left when this great forum was started.
-
Hi, I'm from Yorkshire, UK and became obsessed with everything MK in 1982, when I was introduced to his music by my son. I have seen MK around 20 times, mainly in UK, but also in Amsterdam and last year Dublin. I started reading the forums in the mid-nineties, but only got around to joining MKNews Forum in 2006.

From France, discovered the Straits on my TV in 1984 broadcasting the Alchemy video.

I'm 34, born in Norway, but now live ... somewhere else.
I was heavily into Dire Straits in my teens, and I remember being pretty much out of sync with everyone else in my class, who listened primarily to the charts. I loved the music of Dire Straits, but the main reason I got hooked on them and Mark Knopfler was because of Mark's fantastic guitar playing. His style and tone really hit home with me and made me appreciate tasteful and economical playing before flash and speed.
From being a DS-and-MK-only guy, I have since broadened my musical horizon (jazz, bluegrass, cuban, celtic, classical, etc.), and today I'm really not more than a casual fan. As I have mentioned in other threads, I find a lot of Mark's music these days very boring. Nevertheless, there is still something about MK and his playing that I find really unique and that I admire a lot. So, I am still sticking around to see what's coming up next, hoping that something exciting will emerge :)
I've actually never been to any of his concerts, because when I was really into him, I didn't have the opportunity, and now that I have the opportunity, I'm, well, not that into him. Plus I'm not much a concert goer anyway - can't stand other people chatting and whistling and waiving cameras and phones around (last time I was at concert was at a Tommy Emmanuel concert in 2006 and a David Grisman concert in Carmel, California in 2003 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdkBUaWv7vA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdkBUaWv7vA), both of which were outstanding listening experiences).
Man, did I write all that ...? Sorry for the logorrhea.
-
Hi, Jackal,
nice post! I do not expect any "exiting" things in terms of changing style or maybe "rocking", "faster" stuff. I think the magic is in the details (and for me also in the lyrics). BUT you should really go and see him live! MK live is the essence. It is absolute perfection and magic. He has it. From the moment he enters the stage to the last seconds of the show he sends something out to you that can hardly described. Set list questions are secondary.
So take the opportunity and have a closer look when the next tour dates show up! I am pretty sure you will never regret it!
Sorry for being off topic a little bit.

Hi All,
I am 37 from Southampton, England. Been a DS/MK since late 80's.
I have seen MK:
Bournemouth BIC twice
London, RAH
Brighton Centre
Birningham NEC
And Newcastle City Hall, for the Silver Heart presentation Variety Club lunch, which was on my birthday, so you could say I have spent my birthday with Mark Knopfler :lol
-
thank you Pottel

Hi I'm Ben (Fordie) from the southcoast of England. I'm 35 years old (god it looks worse when you write it :) )
Been a DS/Knopfler fan since about 1985/6 I saw Money For Nothing and Walk of Life on MTV. My first actual album was Communique which was before I even really took much notice of Sultans Of Swing. As time grew I got as much stuff about the Man himself and have been totally hooked, ever since.
There has not been nor will there ever be a musician as amazing as Mark Knopfler. He inspired me to start playing guitar when I was 15 years old and been playing ever since.
Long live the God/Master/Virtuoso... Mark Knopfler.

I think so... What else? :P
A big bald head?

Not many people here from the other side of the Iron Curtain, right? :)
Well, I'm one of them, from Slovakia. Not that many people here know about DS/MK, and sometimes I feel like there is just one real fan of DS/MK in my country...
Seen MK 3 times, Bratislava 1996, Wien 2008, 2010.
Btw, just like Jackal said, I find the "present" music of MK kinda boring, so I just listen to his live shows.
-
Hi,
Nice to meet you all ! I'm 20, I'm from Brittany (an almost independant region in Western France...;) actually living "on the other side of the Iron Curtain", in Prague. I never had the chance to see the Sultan of the Strat, the concert tickets too expensive for me, but I managed to get a copy of the National Duolian. I've been a fan of Knopfler since my early childhood and playing some songs from him in a lot of little bands.
-
I 'm Fabian, 20 years old, from Uruguay, yes, Uruguay, in South America... that little country between Brazil (next football world cup host) and Argentina :)
Been a Knopfler fan for 8 years i think and i've never seen DS nor MK live, the only time he came down here i was 10 (didn't even know who MK was) so every time i read that someone's seen him live is like a knife to the heart. Consecuentally, when i learn that someone has seen the man live over 7 times, i feel the urge to climb to the top of a 35 story building and jump... but in a healthy way :)
Anyway, the only means i have to enjoy Mark's tours is to download audience recordings, if only he came to this continent again...Oh well, crossing fingers for the 2012 tour!
And to the people who leave before Dylan's set, I only know like 5 songs from him and i dont mean no disrespect, but what the hell? That's Bob Dylan up there! >:( ;)

Hello from Russia! :)
I'm from St. Petersburg, I am over 50 years :-[
I listen to Mark's for over 25 years. Three times He came to us and three times I was there!
Sorry but I do not speak and translate through Google.
Now, going to Stockholm... ::)
Thank you that you are!
-
welcome Anhella! and enjoy Stockholm
-
Hello people :)
I've been around this place for quite a long time but haven't come to register until very recently (because of laziness and some technical issues).
Just thought it would be nice to say hello to you all.
-
Welcome "long time fan" Anhella.
You are over 50 and so had the chance to enjoy Mark music all these years.
Being older can be great ;D
-
Welcome Maxx :)
-
Thanks ds1984. I want to live forever to forever enjoy the music of Mark ... :lol
-
From Chicago but living in China a little over 4 years. I guess MK won't be coming my way anytime soon. :( Though Dylan ventured over here this past Spring.
Hello from Russia! :)
I'm from St. Petersburg
Hey Anhella! I visited St. Petersburg (then Leningrad) in 1981. One of the most beautiful cities I've ever been to.
-
I am also from Chicago (Arlington Heights) but have lived near Salt Lake City for 34 years now. An MK fan since I first heard SOS in 1978.
-
welcome all of you!
-
:) ;) :D Welcome to all recent "Newbies" !! Hope your time here is as rewarding as it has been for all of us since back on 1st of August 2008 when Dan activated the AMIT forum for the first time!
We are all indeed fortunate to have a fine artist with such a great gift to offer both musically and as a human being to follow and chat about in a kind & freindly atmosphere as AMIT is known for. Long may it remain so! :)
-
No relation to Guy!
I grew up in the UK in the 80s and one of my school mates lent me Love Over Gold just around the time BIA was released. I was enthralled and acquired all the others except the debut album (which I only first heard in total a few years back!), then after moving to Australia I eagerly awaited the release of OES and was bitterly disappointed - in fact listening to this album recently, it really does contain some stinkers (ticket to heaven/heavy fuel/my parties...)
So life moved on, but around four or five years ago I was inspired to pick up guitar playing and a chance descision to study Sultans with the mindset, "what the hell is Knopfler doing here?" completely reinvigorated my playing. Which made me go back and check out DS all over again.
As a guitar player, being heavily influenced by the Knop is a blessing because you tend not to clash with other blues based guitarists.
I think I first came to AMIT to lament and enquire about the lack of Alchemy in the world. ;D You guys then quickly showed me some of Marks solo goodies (thanks Ian!) and I got hooked! I'm less enamoured with the Celtic stuff but songs like Border Reiver and Privateering do have their charm. I can't help but think Mark should build a studio and dancehall in Limerick and just end his days happily there! :)
-
From Chicago but living in China a little over 4 years. I guess MK won't be coming my way anytime soon. :( Though Dylan ventured over here this past Spring.
Hello, I am from Athens, Greece, which is rapidly becoming China. DS were presented to me by a friend who gave me his brother's Money for noting album to listen to, back in 1989. I was into my heavy metal period, but it was not meant to be. Upon hearing SOS, I changed my course and (almost) never went back. Strange thing, side B of MFN, gave me the impression that I was listening to an american band, and since I had no idea at that time, I thought it was so. But then I figured it out. All great music comes from the U.K. ;D Then I found out about BD and thought, hey this man is ripping the english folk songs. ;D
I have only seen MK in Athens, 2008. I feel like Jackal in a way, but it is more due to change of lifestyle and luck of time, rather than not liking the music. But I guess the fan base of MK is rather shrinking over the years, young people find his music tame. And it is really strange, since DS play the sort of music with roots, but when they released their first LP it was already too late for musicians without 60ies credentials. They sort of fallen between spaces, New Wave, Punk, 80ies pop, the NWOBHM, FM rock, MTV and baby boomer rock. They based their sound on unique MK's guitar textured work and their experimenting with various songwriting forms really paid off, exactly due to the guitar skills. It is strange somehow that these two qualities (songwriting and guitar playing) can't be combined.
then after moving to Australia I eagerly awaited the release of OES and was bitterly disappointed - in fact listening to this album recently, it really does contain some stinkers (ticket to heaven/heavy fuel/my parties...)
Fletch, I really enjoyed OES. It is an album full of surprises. The thing is that I never quite liked the international singles, (CE, HF, the bug) but the rest of the album was superb. Ticket and My parties are just fantastic, the irony so thick you can almost walk on it. But it is a matter of taste.
And I was so disappointed that they didn't come in Greece then, and after that there were no DS :'(

Hadn't seen this thread before, maybe I should have started here.
I'm 47 from Boston,Massachusetts, though I'll turn 48 on that last night of the tour when Mark and Bob come to my current hometown to perform at my party.
Never seen DS or Mark and am real glad he agreed to be my man Bob's warm up act so I could discover him :lol :lol :lol
Plan on being a rabid fan for the rest of my life. :)

And it will be a long life. Statistics have shown that people listening repeatedly to Mark tend to live 30 years longer than others. Of course similar statistics have proved that listening to Bob cuts down your life expectancy for almost 10 years. So 30-10= 20 years more for you. ;D
What's more if you expect Bob and Mark to perform at your 48 birthday party, you will be 47 for a long long time. ;)
