Yeah, saw that, too! A lot of techno-babble, rather uninteresting for me, at least! Seems they are at the earliest stage - all acoustic. Or could it be that MK is really recording a "real" "solo" "acoustic" album? That would be sooooo nice.... Like "World Gone Wrong" by Dylan.... Dreaming... Just imagine a complete record with songs from the caliber of Marbletown....

Guy is able to write a lot and say nothing. That's an art, too!  :lol

There are not information at all  (except they really are in the studio!!)... All these acoustic guitars at first sigh made me think of an acoustic album...
After reading Guy's text... not anymore, lets wait and see !

I agree,he could make a good politician. The only time he seems to give a straight answer is when he gets in a bit of a strop ie like when the eejit from Canada was giving him grief about the faggots - he really got heated on that one.

Well, it seems as though America are doing a bit of interpreting on "Sailing to Philadelphia", with MK's help, and that is a great piece of news for me and I guess we must look forward to a co-operation with America in the future. I know it is a bit weird to mention, but MK has often used the favors he was owed. Jimmy Nail, Van Morrison, Willy de Ville, Eric Clapton etc. No, I guess this is not a right way to think of things, musicians are all a bunch of friends and if they are not, they are admirers and fond to help each other, but it is somehow weird, isn't it?

Personally I can't get excited about America covering his song, they had one hit 40 years ago?

Anybody else get a shiver up their spine when reading about Guy hearing "song number 1" for the first time? Must be a thrill for Guy as well, as he is surely a fan of the music too.

Oh, and I was excited to read that MK had at least tried the Silvertone. Unless I win the Euromillions I won't be owning a 58 or 58 Les Paul any time soon, but at least I have my 68 Silvertone.

Can't make it sound like MK though. :(

I had to look twice if he really is the guy in the background that is looking rather... sceptical?  :lol

I think the return of Paul Franklin is really a big surprise. His last appearance was on "Shangri-La", wasn't it? That's seven years now... I always liked his
contributions. It is right to say that there is not a single line about Matt's leave. I think he deserves some nice words for what he added to Mark's music during the last albums/tours...

The average age in the band has increased now rapidly with Jim and Phil, hasn't it.

I might add that Matt already was somehow "invisible" during the last tour's diaries, he is the only band member that has not been interviewed for the "Life In Songs documentary". Maybe he has other plans for the future, or has troubles now with touring... It has not automatically be MK's decision if somebody
is not in his band anymore...

Hi all,

I'm massively excited for the return of Jim Cox and Paul Franklin. The thought of some awesome pedal steel is rather tantalising in particular. With regard to Danny not being there, it's a shame but a part of me is looking forward to the new drummer. If this drummer ends up on the tour I will get extremely excited of new drum rhythms on songs. Wow I can't bloody wait now.

Ok ok.

Maybe that Mark accustomed us with no big  line up change these past years but is it usual that once a project is over for the next one (partly) a new set of musician can be hired without a word about the one that did not made it that time. That's life.

Title: Re: DIAAAAAAAAARY
Post by: Jackal on June 29, 2011, 05:07:05 AM
All the guys are experienced professionals, and, especially the session musicians, know that the owner of a project is under no obligation to hire them again. Even that the tone is fun and and family-like during recording and tours, I'm sure they all keep that in the back of their heads. I think even Guy thinks like this, that involvement in a project of Mark's is not to be taken for granted. Although Guy is a bit of a special case.
Title: Re: DIAAAAAAAAARY
Post by: dustyvalentino on June 29, 2011, 12:45:56 PM
For me the personnel isn't hugely important - MK has made fantastic records throughout his career with dozens of different musicians.

For me it's all about the songs. If MK has good songs, the album will be good.

The songs on KTGC were sub-par in my opinion. ATRR had a few ropey tracks too, but generally MK's songs are first class, let's hope he has another good batch this time.

All that said, nice to see the return of the great Paul Franklin. And MK still looking cool in his Martin shirt, need to get one of those. :)

The average age sure has increased;  Jim Cox played on Blind Blakes' first album!

Guy said of poor Matt that he was only Jim's stand-in!  Well he was certainly with us for a lot longer than Jim was and deserves a bit more respect than that.  It seems that the current member is the best member in Guy's world.  Danny was the best drummer ever not so long ago but what's Guy saying now?

Not sure why some people here are so disapointed that some former members of the band are now not involved in the new sessions.
I see it like it is. These musicians are professionel musicians, they get hired if they are needed from Mr. Knopfler or not.
It depends on what Mr. Knopfler or whoelse finds what it takes to fit and match the sound for the new album.
That is totally different from a personel "i like him and i like him not" view.

Btw. i like what i read about the new album.
Hopefully Mr. Knopfler is wise enough to not overproduce the album as get lucky was in some aspects.
I love to hear a more natural, raw album with some different sounding songs.

Forgive me if I sounded negative in my post.  I am of course going to miss the usual gang if they don't tour but on the album they almost definately will be doing as told anyway and I doubt if we'll even notice the difference.  The only difference we'll notice on this album will be the return of Paul Franklin.  Wouldn't it be great if he toured again!

I seriously thought about Matt and maybe I (and maybe also Danny) is gone on his (their) own accord. Maybe Danny was looking for more than only "hittin them hard" at Speedway and Telegraph and playing the same set list more or less. Sultans had no development for him since the 2005 tour. The same with Matt: All his solos were on Romeo, Telegraph and Brothers, playing Accordeon on Bonaparte and so on. Maybe they were tired of MK... Matt for sure is a established musician. Of course it is always a privilege to be called to play with MK, but when you have done it for two or three tours long, why not change?

And maybe MK isn't always THAT easy to stand with all his perfection and maybe cold behaviour when it comes to request and musical expectations...
And be honest, the quantity of the band members' creative input is not THAT great - whatever Mark and Guy say about "different every night..."

Pure speculation of course, but when I see it in this light, a personal change seems more natural...

And be fair to the old Doc: He gave Danny the opportunity to send us some lines in his forum. He didn't say anything negative about him and also not about Matt. It is more that he said ... nothing about old Matty... No ginger tea anymore after-show, I'm afraid...

Matt is indeed a top session musician, but let's look at what that actually means - he takes work playing on American Idol and The X Factor. I'm not passing judgement on that AT ALL. He is a working musician and I respect him for going out and working and feeding his young family.

But the idea that he would pass up steady work with MK because his solos didn't change is crazy.

Perhaps he turned it down because he wants to work closer to home, but not because he got bored of the music. He's a working musician.
Title: Re: DIAAAAAAAAARY
Post by: Love Expresso on June 30, 2011, 09:14:09 AM
Still crazy after all those years...
Ok, the non-touring aspect in terms of staying at home was what I was trying to say, also I tried to describe the "looking for new challenges" musically. Maybe that's more what I wanted to say. Yes, he is a top session musician, but shouldn't "top" also mean that he can choose what he wants and doesn't have to take any offer? But I have no idea about the current situation of employment in session muso circles...  Matt was on Golden Heart once and has returned, so maybe he will return in the future once again...

I was thinking: If Guy should ever leave the band (or had to), and whatever you would think of it musicalwise, it would be a big loss for all of us if you take the diaries and the forum alone. Most of the information we have these days is NOT from MKNews or so but it all goes through the Guy channel. Let's hope
it will go on happily in the future for the next few years.  :)

Remember, Matt was brought in because Jim wasn't well enough to play/travel. It could be that MK said at the time "Sorry to lose you Jim, but as soon as you are well agasin, you can have your place back." And now he's feeling better, MK feels honour bound to stick to it.

I remember very well the band-line for the cancelled RPD tour:

MK
Richard Bennett
Marcus Cliffe (bass)
Jim Cox
Guy Fletcher
Fats Kaplin (mandolin, fidle)
Danny Cummings (drums)

And I remember it very well because it was the first time that the bass player wasnt Glenn, and the first time the drums want Chad.

The only big thing I can image is something related to DS.  A short DS-tour, or something like that.  But that would be very unlikely. The announcement of a new MK-tour or another soundtrack doesn't sound big enough to me and would be dissappointing in a certain way.

As much as I would love a Dire Straits tour, I really can't see how that would happen. As Guy said a week ago:

I can assure you that there won't be a DS reunion. Why on earth would anyone think that given this line-up? The exact reason for the delay will soon be apparent.

From all Guys replies it's not DS, Blues Club, NHB, The Straits. He's already done a solo album so surely that just leaves a collaboration live or in the studio. My money's on a live collaboration.

No, its not...

Its a supergroup formed by Clapton on guitar, Sting on bass, Elton John at the piano and Phil Collins on drums, but its hard to organize the schedules of all of them specially when some of them are touring, and Phil Collins needs more training after his back problems that prevented him of playing drums...

I hope it is announced soon.

I should add that this is abviously a joke, dont kill me  ;D

Record with another artist - you mean recording another artist for his own album or playing on someone else's record?

I have been reading Guys forum and usually there is an amazing amount of spin put of things and events that are reported as being big usually turn out to be damp squibs....

I had thought the same for a while - Guy "bigging" things up - however - when i read the comment "official annoucement" i thought that maybe it was actually substantial news..

One question - how do we know this isnt DS related? Had Guy said as much in his posts?  I dont recall any comment saying this isnt DS related...?

I hate to say this.....but i think it could be a DS charity reunion.....like Shepherds Bush....'92....

On Dylan's official site, it has his current tour dates upto and including 20th August, and that is all in the US, so I'm not really thinking that a Dylan tour would be happening.

I was thinking about this topic seriously but couldn't help: Anything else but a pure MK solo album would be a disappointment somehow. I indeed had some
kind of "day dream" during lunch break the other day and that was that indeed only one other artist would be worthy to do a duet with MK: Bob Dylan! (huuu huuuu). I faithfully hope that there will be no David Gilmour, no David Knopfler, no Eric Clapton and no J.J. Cale! They only would absorb each other! (well, at least three of them...  ;D)

ok, I will dream on...!  ::)

I see problems coming up referring to set lists! Bob changes his set every night, Mark pretty much sticks to a certain routine - I wonder how they will work it out! That alone could be interesting enough to go to attend a show of both of them - if it is ONE show - or is it possible that everybody plays a full set?
What else could be meant with the term "double header tour"?

I saw a joint Dylan/Van Morrison show and listened to bootlegs of his tour with Paul Simon.

On both ocassions they played their own sets, although Dylan and Simon did a couple of duets together. So this will probably be the same, not an entire joint show like ATRR.

Whaaauww it took a long time to read all the messages after my vacation!

Superval, it's great that you found that information about Bob Dylan! It is my personal opinion that Bob made a few good songs in the past and there were also a few nice songs at his latest CD, BUT ............I don't like the idea that Mark will be playing at a concert with Bob! Eric Clapton would be something different, but naaahhhh Bob is an old man now and compared with Mark, who's voice got better and stronger the last years, I think Bob's voice is less good!  (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/Fieneke2/Emoticons/Grinning.gif)

Besides when I attent a concert of Mark and his guys, I want Mark for me alone  :P..........Uuuhhh I mean with all the other fans, I want to enjoy his music and watch him playing whole evening and don't want to share him with another artist! Fantastic photos of Mark & co!!!!!!
I had an amazing complex dream about MK
last night. It seemed to go on for ages.
Mark was playing in a small village hall.
He opened the set with 'Walk Of Life',
then did some bits from the 'Last Exit To Brooklyn'
soundtrack, then he played some really laid back tunes
with hardly any guitar on them!
Then, wait for it folks, he started crooning some sort of
Frank Sinatra type song, then half way through the song
he grabbed his long coat, laptop & ran off the stage!!!!
Then I woke up.
In the dream he was also going in amongst the audience
with a bashed up old acoustic guitar.
Most strange??? Hehe.
I love dreaming about Mr K. ( in a healthy way of course) ;D

Cheers. BBB

I think this is a new text from Guy:

It's true, we're going on the road again....with Bob. I'm afraid the secrecy has been necessary over the past few weeks as dates and details for this tour have been subject to many changes right up until the last minute.

We are all looking forward to the opportunity to play live with Mark once again, especially in light of the new recent changes in the line-up. It goes without saying that we all miss Danny and Matt as both contributed greatly to the music both live and recorded and we shared many laughs together, but we now look forward to welcoming Ian into the band and the return of Jim. As I'm sure you are aware we are right in the midst of recording Mark's new album but Mark felt that an opportunity such as this was too good to miss and I'm sure the album, which is progressing very nicely, won't be delayed too long. You will understand that I cannot give more detail about its release than that for now, but Mark and his management are continually looking at this and juggling dates etc.

Hey Dutchessy, after your post from today it seems Guy has now indeed updated the page:

In response to the many questions on this subject - We don't know yet if Mark and Bob will perform TOGETHER, it all depends on Bob I suppose. At the moment, it's MK and band, then a changeover and then Bob and his band, we'll just have to see how it all goes. Stay tuned to the diarioes for info on this once we get rolling...

So who knows, maybe our constant questions and postings have made them think... No, not really, but even if this is not a very great news at all at the moment, it seems they are still busy working out the details and have not worked out everything for a long time yet.

However, in his own forum, where it's less "official", he has added "I'm sure something will happen where the two shall meet."

So we should be optimistic, at least Guy is!

I can't believe that Bob would invite Mark onto a co headline tour with him, unless they were going to play something together, I mean Mark can put on his own world tour at any time should he wish, so he doesn't need Bob's promotion,  so that lead's me to think they will be playing on stage together.

I totally agree with you, it makes no sense if they won't do a couple of songs together.. 8)

Although I would not be surprised to see Mark join Bob on stage, I wouldn't be surprise that Mark didn't join him onstage either.

Maybe that Bob is just a big fan of Mark and that way he can attend some MK show without interrupting his own tour. Only Bob knows the reason he do that.

He is the legend, the MAN. He doesn't need to invite MK to join him onstage if he doesn't want to. Because he is Bob Dylan. And everyone will accept that. Except for me, I think he is just a weirdo  ::)

Guy updated page 4. No talk of page 5 anymore. Interesting stuff, not too interesting for anti-folk people I might add... -Guy obviously plays uke on the album and an accordion can be seen on the pic's, and they did record  some "unusual" backing vocals. Have a look!

Well, handclaps are usually on upbeat songs. :)

Never seen the thinline telecaster behind Richard before. Strange headstock too, like a G+L or something.

Yeah, the same goes with Metallica sound I am afraid. I had so much hope MK would at least do it this time like Metallica or Iron Maiden, but once again,
expectations were too high again....

No one here expects MK to pull a Metallica or Iron Maiden. I guess most of us would already be more than satisfied if he stopped under-using his effin' electric guitars. They're too expensive to be used as dust catchers. He himself has said "I've got a whole wailing wall of electric guitars that could shatter the windows down Brick Lane tonight". So DO IT, Mark!  ;D

No I didn't. I was just a little nerved that he had to point out what we already know.

And YES, Justme, we have to! Let's organise a flashmob and head over to British Grove  ;D

Sorry to Goldenheart for pointing out at something that she already knows.

Hi to Leprechaun and hoping that he got the (ill) humour in my reply.
