Title: Camden museum celebrates Jewish people in showbusiness
Post by: Jarle on May 25, 2011, 11:07:00 AM
Vintage photographs and posters are featured alongside props and costumes, including T. Rex frontman Marc Bolan's gold suit and one of Dire Straits star Mark Knopfler's handmade guitars.

In the video you can see a Pensa in the background, probably one of Mark's. So, if you're in Camden this weekend, or later this year for that matter of fact, then you have something to do ;)

I heard he is, or at least his father was, as far as I recall Earwin Knopfler run away from his country because of the jewish persecution and move to Scotland.

I can be wrong of course, my memory could fail.

Mark's father was Jewish, but I believe that his mother is not Jewish.  I have many Jewish friends and they tell me that the Jewish faith runs through the mother.  If the mother isn't Jewish the children cannot be Jewish either.   Feel free to correct me if this is wrong!    :)    If it is correct, Mark is not Jewish.

Probably because of his Jewish descent.   As I say, correct me if I'm wrong!   ;)

I have never heard that Mark is Jewish, although his father was. I suppose it is good enough to have Jewish roots :)

Let say Mark is half Jewish.

Everybody agree with that or will we discourse on this for 30 pages?

Orthodox Jews hold that your mother must be Jewish for you to be Jewish. I think this is also the official criterion in Israel when they determine who is Jewish.

The reformist and conservative wings of Judaism I believe say you can be Jewish if either your mother or father is Jewish.

Anyone can convert to Judaism and become Jewish religiously, but not ethnically. Kind of complicated, so I'm not sure where that leaves Mark. What is safe to say, as has already been mentioned, is that he is of Jewish decent or has Jewish roots. But how that qualifies him for "Jews in showbiz" is a bit strange.

And who am I to correct you?
