To mark the 40th anniversary of the Old Grey Whistle Test, Radio 2 has commissioned a 16-part series entitled Old Grey Whistle Test 40 hosted by who else but Bob Harris.
Starting in August, the programmes will feature classic archive, new performances and interviews with artists who appeared on the original series and will be recorded at the historic Maida Vale studios. Those already confirmed to take part include Elton John, Alice Cooper, Roger Daltrey, Robert Plant, Mark Knopfler, Paul Weller, Yusuf Islam, Emmylou Harris, Gregg Allman, Simple Minds and Neil Finn.

No, just simple news ;D
Also starting in August... An extra reason for the delay ;)

I guess that they will put on air some of the old Dire Straits stuff and thats all. I hope that they call MK for a propper live show when the new record is released, but for now, I guess it will be just that :)
-
To me, that is the best part of the news! Looking forward to it.
-
any news on extra content, compared to the original version??

It looks like the episode with Mark is recorded on 15 September.

The Thing About Hank
Tuesday 11 October
1.30-2.00pm BBC RADIO 4
Hank Marvin influenced a generation of guitarists including Jimmy Page, Mark Knopfler and Phil Manzanera.
In The Thing About Hank they, together with Cliff Richard, reveal the influence he had with his wide grin, black specs and red Stratocaster. The programme also features the man himself, Hank Marvin.
The programme explores Marvin's unique sound, which Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page reveals he tried hard to emulate as a teenager. And Page was not the only aspiring guitar hero adapting Hank's style. Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits recounts his school days explaining how he and his pals learnt The Shadows' tunes after class.
And Cliff describes how he purchased Hank's first Fender Stratocaster, imported from America. Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera believes this "Strat" guitar was crucial to the Hank Marvin sound that became a key feature of The Shadows' success.
And Hank himself talks through The Shadows' "walk", copied by teenagers throughout Britain.

Thank you so very much for the teasing info. It would be a big favour, let alone very kind, to have it on youtube or other sharing internet site, for all interested that can't have the live pleasure.

You can listen to every bbc radio station live here:

I can do it from Spain, so I guess anyone can.
-
Thank you, I will give it a try, but for some reason I have failed in the past.

I know that the bbc iplayer doesnt work outside the UK in whatever has to do with television, but I can listen to the radio for sure, actually I always connect to BBC Radio 2 as their morning programmes are quite good in musical terms...

Well you know it is more about the itch to listen to it when it is first aired, but my family program lately is out of control, so I might have to settle for a re-recording, after all. Old grey whistle test was a great show. It took it's name from the fact that if the old grey people (cleaners, janitors etc) working in the studios could whistle the tune they have heard from the bands, that indicated a hit. (or at least, that the song was worth listening and airing)
I have two double collections with recordings from their shows, unfortunately DS are not in any of them. Same goes with the 2 DVDs I have, but I know there are more, so I can't put my finger on it. Of course, as you already know their recordings have surfaced. They were actually the ones I could find most easily in the early 00.
Thank you so much.

In the BBC Radio site you have the chance to listen to it after it was broadcasted, at least with the BBC Radio 2 programmes are like that, I guess that with the Old grey whistle test is the same.
Thanks for the story, I didnt know and its quite nice!

Thanks for the youtube link. The interview is jumping a bit here and there (Notting Hillbillies, Nashville); I think he should have tried to pull out more info about how DS felt at the event, etc.
I fully understand that Mark is reluctant about talking about the past and all that, but suddenly he throws out a little nugget and you feel history comes alive. When he described how he was sitting in the flat in Deptford wondering if they'd ever get signed, that adds that personal touch to the story that we all know so well. And very often he gives the impression that doesn't have the clue about anything, probably because he's bored, but I'm pretty sure all the details are there.
Mark, how about your personal memoirs, man?
