Hi all, you surely know that famous picture of MK from the "A Night in London" VHS/DVD - it was also used as promo poster during the Golden Heart tour:
http://www.guitar-players-toolbox.com/images/mark-knopfler-21358887.jpg (http://www.guitar-players-toolbox.com/images/mark-knopfler-21358887.jpg)
Now, I dug out my MK picture collection and found it, but in a very poor resolution only (I must have saved it before I started working for newspapers... Because there, you learn that low-res pictures are an absolute no-go). So my question is, does anybody have a high-res version of that pic (the bigger, the better)? Or maybe a similar one of MK in "Guitar God" pose, preferably from the Straits era? I'd love to print it out... I also found some posters on ebay but they all have writing on it and would only be my second choice. Any help would be appreciated! :) :)
-
It strange because that picture made by Mark Leilahola was very famouse and used in that years, but right now I can
-
Although it seems to be a scanned picture of the whole cover and it is a bit too dark, the resolution is 1600x1085.

BTW, for printing out really large images out of low-resolution pictures, I may recommend the Rasterbator at: http://homokaasu.org/rasterbator/
This little program extrapolates the pixel array of the source file which adds an interesting dot matrix effect (like in the Roy Lichtenstein pictures) to the enlarged picture that can be printed on multiple A4 sheets afterwards.
-
Well if you find a clean hi res version i'd like to get one.
Or if somebody know how to get in touch with the photographer or his representant to buy a print.
(although I fear very high price asked if original print - but I am in love with that pic)
Please note that there are at least 2 different pictures used from that session : one with the left hand near the neck and another one with the left hand near the body.
A french guitar magazine from early 90's did use it as the central poster.
BTW I found that one :

And the "alternate" pose :

This poster was published in France by Guitarist Magazine
Edit : got a contact with a seller and although the right magazine not the correct issue. THE ISSUE SHOWN BELOW IS NOT THE ONE that featured my poster. Correct issue is #36 from may 1992 featuring Carlos Santana on cover (no pic available)
Probable issue #72 - september 1995

Thanks for the replies so far, and the pictures!
IIRC, the pic in question was also used for a mini poster advertisement for D'Addario strings. I am almost sure it was attached in the centrefold of the OES tourbook, or the STP tourbook... I am also almost sure I have it, but I can't bloody find it :(
It looks very similar to this one (but smaller I think):

This must be one of the best MK stage pics, my favorite too. I love the play of light and shadow on Mark's face here, as well as deep emotions and dedication. I tried to capture the atmosphere of this pic when I had my avatar picture taken.
-
This is my most favorite picture of Mark also. I'd like to have it printed on a T-shirt. It's the kind of picture of Mark that tells thousands of words. Just love it !!! ;)

The japan only laserdisc cover is also very beautiful

Yes, I've seen it on ebay - as a concert poster or ad for the GH album, but always with too much text on it...
By the way, can somebody enlighten me about that D'Addario ad? It was attached to either the OES or the STP tourbook, wasn't it?

It was inside the STP tourbook.

Thanks! Now I really really want to know where I put it. I looked through ALL my effin' drawers and shelves but no poster :(

I dont remember that picture being used in the STP promo or the tourbook, but my memory is not good at all, so ;D

Yes, it's in the STP tourbook - I have it in front of me! The picture of the one with his hand near the body is on the front and the one with his hand near the neck is inside (advertising Rudy's Music Shop) . There are also some nice adverts for Fender, Gibson and one with MK advertising Martin guitars. :)

I'm about to move into my new flat, so I need some MK related pics and posters to decorate my walls. I suddenly remembered this thread and this great GH era pic. I want it as a poster. Can anybody help?

How about that one? My all time favourite MK-photo:

For Dylan, there are several photo sites on-line. One of the most extensive is here:
http://dylanstubs.com/pictures/welcome.htm
I wondered if there were any similar site for MK.
This Dylan site has expanded a lot in recent years. In its earlier days, it was not always accurate as to year, date and source but that has improved a greatr deal now. There are still a few errors but, for anyone who gets in involved in writing about Dylan or similar, this is an occupational hazard.
There are some great photos of MK, so perhaps there ought to be a photo gallery of this kind.
-
Someone mentioned the artist Roy Lichtenstein earlier, so here's a little story about how I met him - briefly:
In late 1993, I went over to New York to go to Dylan's four shows at the Supper Club (another little story, incidentally, but not for now). On the next day, news came through that Dylan was to appear on The David Letterman Show that evening. Because of the flight I'd booked, I could not attend the recording but I was able to accompany friends ensconced in a bar next to the Ed Sullivan Theater where the show is recorded. Across the street, Robin Williams was making some film, as I recall. My friends were working all their contacts in Dylan's entourage to get themselves into the Letterman show - and they succeeded, it transpired. One of my Dylan contacts was there and he was also booked to fly home that evening and on the same Air India flight as me. We decided to hook up for the rest of the day, share cab fares and so on. An American friend of his offered to take us both out to eat. So, the two of us loaded our luggage in her car (yes, we'd both checked out of our hotels) and she drove off to the western side of Manhattan and down the road that goes past the USS Intrepid floatring aircraft museum. She had a particular place in mind but, as she got level with the Greenwich Village, she suddenly changed her mind. "I've got a better place to go", she shouted, as she suddenly turned across into the Meat Market district. Now, this area is quite chic, I believe; then, it looked half-derelict and a bit unsavory. We paarked in what I now know to be Ganesvoort Street, across the road from a cafe. In terms of the area, I wasn't prepared to leave my luggage in her car. We crossed to the cafe (Florent was its name) and, as we sat down, our American friend said, "That's Roy Lichtenstein over there". I wanted to get his autograph but played it cool. He was with two younger women, incidentally, and they were seated at a table well away from the front door and positioned so that he could see the whole of the dining area. I kept a discrete eye on the progress of his meal. because I didn't want to interrupt his eating. At what I judged to be a judicious moment, I went to the restroom, which involved passing his table. On the way out (that is, coming from the back of the dining area and slightly away from the direction of his gaze), I turned, apologized for interrupting his conversation and asked very politely if he could sign my notebook. He listened when I said that I'd attended the exhibition of his works at the (old) Tate Gallery in London in the late 1960s and he graciously signed a page in my notebook - unfortunately on the reverse of where I'd written someone's address. I wish I'd proffered a fresh page and had asked him to do some dots or circles on the page around his signature but the autograph was more than sufficient.
Incidentally, I applied exactly the opposite approach when playwright Arthur Miller attended the London opening night of one of his plays at a small theatre in North London - and I was also successful. The circumstances were entirely different and called for different tactics.
-
Once I was cleaning up the attic, I found a hand-written letter by Shakespeare. Which was nice.
-
There are five known Shakespeare signatures - none have the letter "e" in them. The "e" was most likely added by Elizabethan typesetters who quite commonly interposed extra letters in order to separate other letters that would be awkward to typeset next to one another. In this case, the long right-curling foot of the "k" with the long left-curling foot of the "s". When the First Folio was published, the dedication to Shakespeare was printed in italics which made the problem worse; they resolved this by adding a hyphen and the letter "e". Thus: "W.Shake-speare".
Source: "The Shakespeare Miscellany" by David Crystal and Ben Crystal (page 72)
Although there are so few of Shakespeare's signatures, there were a lot of relevant contemporary documents. I can recommend "William Shakespeare - A Documentary Life" by S.Schoenbaum. This large tome has reproductions of many (possibly all) of these documents, some involving large fold-out pages. It is a very handsome book and, if you have any interest in Shakespeare's life, I would recommend checking out the second-hand book websites for copies. Not cheap but there are riches within.

So - Shakspar?
-
Yup, you got me. I should have said: "none have the letter 'e' in the middle of them".
The Shakespeare family name can be traced back to the thirteenth century but over 70 variations have been found in its spelling. For example, "Sakespere" in 1248.
An American scholar once researched the various spellings of William Shakespeare's name between 1564 and 1616. He found 342 instances with 25 variations in its spelling. However, 60% of the instances had it as "Shakespeare" or "Shake-speare".
The only surviving letter written to Shakespeare gives his name as "Shackespeare". The letter, asking for a loan, was dated 25 October 1598 and was most likely never delivered as it was discovered in the writer's papers.
And, if you saw the film "Shakespeare In Love", Queen Elizabeth never actually went to see plays in a theatre. If she wanted to see them, the plays came to her - by being performed at court.
-
i did like that movie though...
-
"Shakespeare in Love" was co-written by Tom Stoppard, one of my wife's favourite playwrights. She is the real theatre buff in this household. I just pick up on some of the slightly abtruse elements.
-
she is also the bigger MK fan in your household, am i right? ::)
-
Wow, that was all totally helpful and stuff. Now I definitely know where to find my MK poster ::)

She is, Pottel, she is.

no need for the irony. i for one find these little stories entertaining, and yes, they do not necesarrily relate to the original theme of (your) thread, but it is not the first, nor the last time this happens, if it happens with post like those, i could not care less, if it happens with flaming posts for example, that is an entire different matter.
not sure if you stated it anywhere, but...did you try ebay and the likes? or contact PCM?
-
I guess I'm the one who has taken this thread off in other directions and, if that offends you, goldenheart96, then I'm sorry.
By mentioning the question of resolution, I assume you do not want an original but a good quality copy to put in the file in your computer. If you can find a suitable picture on eBay, as you say, but it has writing on it, just save it and use Photoshop to cover the writing.
If you don't want to buy Photoshop, then download something like General Image Manipulation Program. It goes under the unfortunate name of GIMP but it is free. It is pretty sophisticated (probably too sophisticated for what I want) and it is not user-friendly, especially for a newcomer to this sort of thing. However,it comes with a self-help guide and, though a rank amateur at these things, I managed to get it to do what I wanted after a few tries. These things do take time and care but some of the results can be quite dramatic. Most of the MK images are recent, so it should be fairly straightforward. You should try cleaning up photos from old magazines and newspapers ,or concert adverts from the dim and distant past ,or even articles taken from microfilm - I can tell you from personal experience, they take hours and are really fiddly.
If you get GIMP (or something similar), my recommendation would be to grab the image you want in the uality you want it, from wherever, save it in your file, then copy it using the "Save As" facility, giving it the same file name as before but with an addition (say: "copy 2" or "Improved") at the end. This means that you can do the image manipulation work on the "Save As" image. This has two benefits: (1) if you make an irretrievable mistake, you've still got your original image and (2) if you do a good job, you can switch back and forth between the original downloaded image and your manipulated/improved image and bask in the wondrous results of your endeavours.
I should have said, GIMP does come with a Back button, so, as long as you haven't saved the changes you've made, you can always go back. You should, periodically, check if you're happy with the changes you've made, however, and then save those changes, in case your PC goes into freefall or something. As I said, this can be a time-consuming process and you wouldn't want to lose all your hard work.
Here's the Wiki report on GIMP:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIMP
And here's the official site:
http://www.gimp.org/
And, I repeat, it's free.
Now, where was I?

I understand Goldenheart96 feeling quite well, I dont like when interesting threads take other directions and then you have 3 pages of "off-topic" conversation and just two or three "on-topic" posts.
It can be fun for most of you, but for others, specially when someone is waiting for some help, is not.
Goldenheart96, there are many posters in ebay, search there.

So, when someone says "Look in ebay" it means the thread is open to whatever. Isnt it?
Maybe someone has posters to sell, or know other shops to buy posters etc etc etc, I guess that was what Goldenheart96 was expecting...

-
That's hilarious. If they had copied something that was easily identifiable, like the Alchemy arrows or the lower case first letter (dIRE sTRAITS), it might be understandable, as a nod to the past. But when they choose something as obscure as this, they might as well just have created something new! it just becomes silly. Feel it says a lot about the artistic originality in the group. Maybe they are just cheap.
-
I like that '79 one but too bad they weren't around in the 60s when poster artwork was in it's prime; vivid colours and bold designs. :(
-
I was actually looking for a real poster, like this one, but with less writing on it:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Mark-Knopfler-The-first-solo-tour-Promoplakat-Konzertplakat-Tourposter-/330691005887?pt=Poster&hash=item4cfeb84dbf
There are also promo posters, advertising the Darlink Pretty single for example, but those are only mag ads and are therefore too small.
The blue DS one also looks nice... A big LOG poster would look great too, I'm sure. I already have one but it has quite a few tears on the edges because the attached concert tickets are too heavy (Don't ask me why but I attach all my concert tickets to posters).
By the way, it's quite ironic to complain about my irony. There have been other ironic comments in the past that have been far more inappropriate. Just saying. And of course I was not offended, twm. It's just that if you're looking for something very hard, it's a little bit annoying to find some (nonetheless funny) Shakespeare anecdotes instead of poster links ;)
-
That's OK, goldenheart. No offence taken. We'll call it a draw.
Actually, my wife has a spare of a poster with that photo. At the top, to the right of MK's head, it says: Sultans of Swing - The Very Best of Dire Straits", and in the bottom of the right-hand corner, it has small Vertigo logo. It's a double-sided poster. On the reverse is the blue, yellow and white poster for the same album.
If you're interested in making an offer, let me know.
-
Actually, my wife has a spare of a poster with that photo.
Actually, that's ironic!! :)
LE
-
Yes, it is ironic but entirely genuine.
Following a recent house move, I came across a huge carton some weeks ago, with Polygram parcel tape on it, and remembered that, long ago, I'd been given it by our local record shop owner (are there any local single-owner record shops now?) who had remembered my wife's interest in DS/MK. I couldn't recall what the carton contained, so I checked. Mainly, it was a big cardboard construction, in a sort of 3-D format, with the artwork of that album. It came with some flat cardboard advertising sheets with short details from the album.
Also in the carton were copies of a poster. I knew that the poster related to the album, with the blue, yellow and white design, because all the rest of the contents of the carton were that same design. I also knew but had forgotten that there was a photo of MK on the other side and that he was wearing a red shirt. It didn't occur to me, until earlier today, that I ought to check the carton again to see exactly which photo was on the other side.
Lo and behold, it was a version of the poster, as illustrated in earlier postings, in pretty much mint condition, too - no pinholes, not a fold on it and the corners intact. It's about 30" (say 75 cm) by about 20" (say 50 cm) and, having now taken one out of the carton, quite a handsome beast. My wife has confirmed that she would like to sell the duplicate poster.
Mea culpa.
-
Seems you got lucky, goldie.
-
I haven't heard from goldenheart (yet?) but, in my defence, I genuinely thought she was trying to find a copy on-line, so that she could download it and print it off. It was when she said she wanted the actual poster that I thought I'd better check out the carton.

I was actually about to post something along the lines of, "I do hope nothing's wrong".
What's FB?
-
I am happy to report that I know that it's FACEBOOK! After all those years I finally decided to give myself right into the hands of social network and get advertized by Mr. Zuckerberg all the time... oh and sorry of course for using this abbreviation, I myself don't like it and should not use it myself!
LE
-
Of course, I know of Facebook. Indeed I saw the film about Zuckerberg on some longish flight once and have read articles about the guy and his service in magazines. I am not on Facebook myself and I personally know several people, younger than me, who signed up for it, used it for a while and then gave it up - or, at least, tried to and never use it now. I've read something about Zuckerberg's future development plans, too, and they sound even more worrying than my concersn about its current incarnation. Doubtless, it has its uses but I can do without it and hope that continues to be the case.
Thanks, anyway, for your efforts, LE.

twm, the e-mail you a obviously referring to was just a reminder that you got news in your Message box, at the head of the page, in one line with Profile, Members, etc. You cannot answer that e-mail (because it is just a reminder), but have to go into your message box system, search the incoming mail and from there you can answer.
