Title: Mark praised by Ry Cooder in interview
Post by: Jackal on September 16, 2011, 11:02:54 AM
From a 1988 interview. Go to 4:29. Nice words from a great musician about another great musician. (The whole interview is interesting. In many ways, I feel Ry's and Mark's viewpoints are similar. GET TOGETHER, BOYS!)

Ry was in Tokyo to promote his new record "Get Rhythm" but ended up talking about the hard road music had taken him on.
Interviewers: Steve Harris and Ken Sato
Date: June 23, 1988

Indeed, Ry Cooder is a nice guy, and a fabulous guitarist

He's of course famous for his slide playing, but his fret playing is worth to listen, especially his rhythm playing, which is in many ways close to Mark.
Listen to this version of The very things makes you rich (Santa Cruz 25/03/1987), between 2'30 and 4'40, it's a perfect example of rhythm blended with lead, and it's obvious that Mark has listen a lot to him

It's similar in that they both play fingerstyle, but Mark places his thumb much more forward and anchors his ring finger and pinky. Mark also seems to play more single-note lines in his solos whereas Ry plays more double stops or multi-note lines.

Ry is really a guy who deserves more recognition, but he has gone down a very eclectic route, so it's not so strange that he's been kept off most people's radars. Note Randy Newman's brilliant comment in this Cooder interview:

wonder if Mark is gonna hear it now? guy's reply was vague, as always on these kinda topics. still, it is a real nice compliment, so if i were Guy, i would actually show Mark.

I'd guess not. It's an old interview. In any case, Guy is difficult to figure out sometimes, so you never know.

If someone can find the interview where Mark has a word about the "Paris Texas" soundtrack it could give a light on Guy answer.

Pottel, I would rather say that it's Mark who have a picking technique similar to Ry  :)

don't forget that Ry Cooder begun his career a few years before Mark.

And Mark has listen a lot to him, and of course also to Blind Blake, Son House, Chet Atkins, and so on...

Jackal, I agree but we often talk about Mark's lead work, and rarely about his rhythm work (which is in this case the smilarity with Cooder) :
Mark's rhythm parts on Skateway, Single Handed sailor, In the gallery, Setting me up, are far more "complicated" (and hard to reproduce) than his lead parts on these same songs
