Its possible to preorder two different editions, the normal one and the deluxe edition with an extra cd of other Bap

Great song! I'm really looking forward to Bap's album. With MK producing, it's got to be GOOD :)
-
Shimnavale sounds nice. Unmistakable John McCusker on the violin on the first seconds, and Mark has the same guitar used obviously as on Greg Brown's
Flat Stuff? Sounds really nice, liked it from the first listening. Decision made, order will be set soon.

Beautiful! Can't wait to order! :)

Nice! 8) :D

You can order right now ;D

jbaent thanks for the info! Always the most up to date and reliable source of MK information!
-
listening to that song at the moment. Beautiful!
-
It sounds brilliant.
-
Thank you.
But really not what I expected after what I heard when opening for Mark. Not my cuppa.
-
Man, so many contributions, from MK. I guess most of them because they use his studio, but if he played with every artist visiting British grove, there would be no money left to buy his solo album. ;)

On his facebook site you can listen to a second track: Please return to jesus

Thank you for the link Dutchessy I wonder why they rush preview release songs when it is only 2 months away from official release. They kill the spontaneity for the listener who have already ordered the record. I could have waited a couple of ... years to listen to it, anyway. I mean I understand the reasons but then you can complain about reduced sales for the actual product, the record.
I don't know what's coming over me with this whole thing, I am sorry for spoiling the good vibrations!
Anyway if you want to listen to something great, listen to Grin's first two albums. They are fab, almost 40 years after their release! Nils Lofgren is such an underrated composer and guitarist. "We all sung together" :D :D :D :D

I find Please Return To Jesus rather dull ... and it misses the MK touch, if it has one at all...

My thoughts... Shimnaville is very nice. But this song... Mwaaah...

Agree with all of the above :(

New releases song: Jimmy Sanchez

Thats one of the tracks in which MK plays...

I know, but I miss his touch nonetheless. It seems to be one of Mark's poorer contributions...

Noooooo, thats the "Love song" by The Dandy Wharlhols...

Merry Christmas!

I like Jimmy Sanchez.
MK does not play, but Glenn Worf is stunning on that one. Give the bass a nearer listen.
Also very nice sung from Bap.

Another new tune:

Wow, that one I like very much! Good voice! Starts as "just" another folky tune, but then it goes off rather rockish! Do I hear a little MK power chords in there? Too lazy to check out if he played on it...
Gosh, that track alone is worth buying the album! :o

Made me think it was MK too. But don't know if he played on that tune.
Too bad we haven't heard any solo of MK so far on the 4 known tracks. (except Shimnaville)

Working Man*/Maybe I Will/Shimnavale*/Not a Day Goes By/The Beauty of You/Jimmy Sanchez/Lonely No More*/ Please Return to Jesus*/The Sailor

Whole album is here streamable at Bap's Facebook:

Yes, than the stream is there with ALL the songs 8)
-
Yes I know, just listening at the moment. I was just kidding. I mean what if I DON'T like what I hear.... But all good so far... (but to be honest sounds all very similar, and I just wait for a nice and fat MK guitar solo! ;))
LE
-
Some nice MK fiddling on the title track.
LE
-
So here is my judge: If it was the new MK album I would have been disappointed... Nothing spectacular... the music and band is playing nice but the song writing seems not that strong to me. But maybe I should listen more to it...
It struck me that Bap's voice somehow is a blend of the voices of John Mellencamp and .... Jon Bon Jovi??? ::)
LE
-
It's very difficult to me to find the MK touch in many of the tracks he plays. Actually if someone says to me that he doesn't plays at all, I could believe it...
-
"Shimnavale" is the only song so far that I can hear MK's guitar playing, but I have only heard the four songs from Bap's site, because I am not a member of Facebook, but I have just ordered the album on the basis of those four songs, which I really like.
-
At the end of Sailors Revenge you can recognise a bit MK guitar too.
But yes, i agree with jbaent.
-
Bap will be appearing on U105 today from 4pm. He'll be talking to Johnny Hero about the new album and Mark Knopfler.

No, I don't know what U105 is... I suppose some British TV or Radio channel?
It's here: http://www.u105.com/
But it's too late now ;)

Very nice recording!!
Many lovely tunes! I will buy it! ;)

My CD arrived today and I have just finished listening to all of the songs for the first time. I tend to agree with LE that it is very nice and pleasant to listen to, but perhaps the songs are all a bit in the same vein. The band sounds great and I can definitely hear MK on the CD more than I could from when I listened to the four on Bap's site. One thing though - I can't hear MK's or, indeed, any backing vocals on "Celtic Sea". Anyway, I think it's something which will grow and grow with more listens. :)
-
Awwww! I can't get the software for sampling the music to work for me! >:(
-
So, does anyone hear Mark's voice on Celtic Sea?
-
I've listened twice now to the whole album, and although it's all very nice, a whole album of "nice songs" is too much for me. I can't bring myself to listen to it again. Oh well another

I have a brainwash (pan intended) procedure for those albums. Stick them in the CD player and play them repeatedly for days on. You get familiar with the structure of the songs, a feeling-knowledge similar to liking the songs.
That even works for KTGC ;D ;D
I use do that too. However it only works for MK and John Hiatt for me. I get bored with others doing like that.
-
There is not getting away with it, is it now? ;D
Scripta manent.
Rollergirl, you don't have Greek roots by any chance? (or maybe Italian) ;D
-

I have done this with many albums, but you need determination and staying power! In the end I have actually liked these albums more than the ones I loved immediately! :)

Me too, it's the ones that I love immediately that suffers the most. Prime example for me is Sonny Landreth's "from the reach". I loved it from the first listen, listened to it to death and I can't stand it now.

NOPE ;D. It will haunt you for the rest of your life ;D
(My great grand mother was italian, actually ;D)
-
OK, so that makes you 1/8 th Italian. I don't know if that counts, but it would explain your sense of humor and justice. (A vendetta ;D )
As for the records with immediate appeal, I can only argue that all in all, it is a matter of statistics. If you count the number of times you hear a record, or the will to listen after a long time, or whatever. I have the same problem, "spending" the records I like at first listen, but, hands down, I have certainly spent way more time with the easy ones, adding up the times I have listened to them. I have heard like a virgin more times than True love will never fade. ;D
You can have bread everyday, but you can't eat caviar everyday! (OK, I haven't tasted caviar ever, you can replace it with your favorite snack or sweet. Or beer / wine and Champagne)
-
I used the "let it play continuously method" on GF's Inamorata. Really glad I did as I love it now.

oh yeah, that worked for me too, so that's MK, John Hiatt and GF.

I just got my copy.
As I ordered the Limited Deluxe Edition, with bonus cd, I found a surprise in that bonus cd...
Its a track titled "Into the arms of love" that was recorded in the same sessions that the record, but wasnt included on it... It means that if you didnt ordered this version, you dont have that song.
I still dont know if MK plays on it (havent heard it yet), but its sure MK produced it.
-
There goes the customer faith. Another trick to sell the record twice! And then they complain about poor sales!
-
Well, I always buy the limited editions if I can, and in this case it was just a little bit expensive (little little bit) and I get an extra cd with kinda "Baps greatest hits" so I thought it was worth to expend some more euros to get more songs.
-
Yes, same here. Years of experience taught me to always go for the limited edition if it is not extremely overpriced. Of course some differences in the cover, or some times a time lapse between the original release and the expanded one, makes me the owner of both releases. :P ::) >:( in that very order. ;D
-
The bonus cd is brilliant!!!!
I play his records very regularly in spotify and I liked them, but the tracks selected in this bonus cd is just brilliant!!!!

Mark Knopfler does play guitar on that song. "Into the arms of love" is available in itunes, so if you bought the normal cd version, you can buy this extra song in itunes.

Just today I received my limited edition copy! I will start listening to it tomorrow, and I will get back to you with my first impressions.
Thank God I ordered the limited one, since the difference was 1-2 pounds only, and you get a best of and not just the extra song from i-tunes. And I still hate buying music in a no physical form. I feel like buying air, and can't connect to it as deeply. (which is strange, because music has little to do with the physical "shell" that contains it) Maybe I am old fashion, a fetishist. ;D

I think that it has to do with us being part of a generation that saw the vynils when child, and then saw the birth of the cd, so we have a musical culture where the physical format for music is important. Maybe the next generation will know only the digital ones and will consider the vynils or cd as something old fashiones and out of date "Who wants that big things when you can have thousands of songs in a tiny mp3", but I agree, I preffer always the physical format, although I always end listening to them in spotify or my ipod instead of the cd, but I like to look at them, read the booklet etc etc

Hello all. Not posted on here for a while but read regularly. My tuppenceworth on the Bap album for what its worth. I think its great. Maybe lacking an uptempo number here or there, but extremely enjoyable and, of course, excellently produced. The flute solo in Jimmy Sanchez is one of the most gorgeous things I've ever heard. I've enjoyed bap's music for a while and the bonus CD is an excellent sample of his older solo work. All in all, a really great piece of work. My only teensy weensy gripe-ette is that he maybe overplayed Mark's contribution in the marketing ahead of release. Mark is stated to be playing guitar in several songs. He may be strumming in the background but he is only really identifiable in Shimnavale, the title track and the right stuff (which is a rehash from a previous album). His production is clear to hear though. For those (and there will have been some) who bought the album primarilly because of MK's participation, it may have come as somethimg of a disappointment. But it's Bap's album, not Mark's and I think its great.

Bap is on Whispering Bob's BBC radio 2 show Midnight till 0300 Sunday.
-
Just listened to the programme on iplayer and it was nice to hear some of the songs played live, with James Walbourne on guitar. I especially enjoyed James' guitar on The Right Stuff and Bap had some nice things to say about BG and Mark as a producer.
The link is on Guy's Forum. :)

Listened to the whole album this morning.
Excellent production (as expected), fine songs, great musicianship, but quite monotonous. And Bap has this very melancholic voice that makes the whole album sound like a rainy Sunday in Ireland. Maybe it's because of my obsession with bluegrass ten years ago, but the dobro annoys me. Feels like it's everywhere. (Same with Transatlantic Sessions - I know Jerry Douglas is like one of the central figures of the show, so he's entitled I guess to play on almost everything. But it doesn't mean he has to ...)
-
I wrote further back that I hoped the album would grow on me more and more. I am very glad to say that it definitely has! It still has a kind of monotonous sound, mainly due to Bap's rather flat-sounding voice, but there are some beautiful songs on the album and Celtic Sea, which I wasn't too keen on at first, has now become one of my favourites.
I tend to agree with you, Jackal, about Jerry Douglas. I love Transatlantic Sessions - have seen the live show and watch the TV programmes, but Jerry's dobro has become a tad omnipresent! I hope he and his dobro aren't all over the new album.

Do you mean MK album? I didnt hear anything about Jerry playing in MK album, and I would love that, I
-
Yes, I'm pretty sure Guy mentioned Jerry being on the album, but then again it could have been Bap's album he was talking about - he's on that one!
I like Jerry too, but not on everything! :)
-
jbaent - Just read through Guy's diary and can find no mention of Jerry on MK's album - I was mixed up with Bap! :)
