Today I ordered my tix for The Boss' tour next year! Am super excited! Only discovered him a few months ago... The Rising has been playing in my car stereo for quite a while now. So, anybody else here into The Boss?
-
You want to listen to shows from the "Darkness on the edge of town "Tour in 1978 Goldenheart...Bruce and E-Street at their best..there is a show from Atlanta in '78 on Dime that is excellent. I saw them on that tour..and to this day it is still one of the best concerts I have ever seen..the level of energy in the arena that night was unimaginable. I've seen him a few times since then...'84..'86..and by himself in a small theatre in 1992 touring on "The Ghost of Tom Joad"..all great shows but none could compare to the '78 show.
-
Yes i have been a fan for the last 27 years ,wasn't old enough in the 70's but there are plenty of great boots from that era,try and get hold of the the promise box set that is really the essance of Bruce. For whatever reason the tour dates aren't really working out for me so not sure if i will catch a show on the coming tour but will be there in spirit if not in mind. If Bruce is in your town catch him.
-
I love his second album, The wild , the innocent and the E street shuffle. But every album has hidden treasures. But I can't say I have spent much time with his records after 1991.
-
Every now and then when I'm in the mood, just love me an epic listen of Bruce's 3 cd live boxset from the mid eighties! Such passion in his speeches, singing and playing.
Our band has been doing an ok version of 'Fire' as heard on the boxset!

For all the Bruce and Bob Seger fans out there..thought I would post this here..just happened the night before last...a classic!!

Enjoy! ;D

Nice clip with Bruce and Bob. I don't know anything about Bob Seger, and I must admit that when you see the clip you want to say "Dad, you're drunk. Go home." ;D

At Dylan's induction to the RnR hall of fame, (in the 80ies?) he played "Forever young" with Bruce Springsteen. Can't find the video, but searching I found out that they have performed it again and again!

I saw him a few years ago & came out of the gig a bit disappointed - like a lot of people I'd listen to his music but I wouldnt be a die hard fan or anything like it.The gig was about 3 hours long & he must have played 25 songs in the set but I'd say that I knew about 5 at best .I remember coming out of the gig & saying to myself is that what casual MK fans feel like when they come out of a MK gig - dont get me wrong if you were up in the front, had all the albums & had a bladder like an elephant youd have had a ball but I like the easier life where I can have a few pints & a leak when I need to :o :o As I say if you know all the material & have a belly full of beer then go for it with an empty bottle but I wont be going back - been there & didnt buy the tshirt ;)
-
I've been a fan of Broooooce since 84, and will of course attend his show in Oslo the coming summer. Bruce is the greatest live artist ever!
-
Wow, great, goldenheart96 ! Where are you going? I'm thinking about one of German or Norwegian dates, but have not decided still.
I've been to 3 Bruce's shows in 2009, he's an absolutely fantastic man.

I'm going to see him in Frankfurt on May 25 - and maybe a second time in Zurich. Really, really looking forward to the show(s)!
Heard awesome things about the 2009 tour, too, so I can't wait to see for myself 8)

Be sure, you'll be satisfied! ;)

Bruce's new single "We Take Care Of Our Own":

From the upcoming album "Wrecking Ball", release date March 6.

Lyrics are quite tricky and capable of being misunderstood - the same as with Born in the USA. Musically repetition seems to be his style for some time now. I like it nevertheless.

Yes, he did not re-invent the wheel, did he. But I also like the song! :)
-
Just checked out the dates and found that he plays in Cologne on Whitsunday, May 27th. Perfect occasion to go, isn't it? I seriously think about buying a ticket...

Over the past several years, I've learned a few things about Bruce Springsteen. At first, when he joined up with the E Street Band five years ago, he was wondering if there was anyone alive out there. I guess he figured out that there was, because he spent quite a long time afterwards working on a dream. Now that he's done with his dream, he's decided to settle down and take care of his own. Who says repetition isn't the mother of wisdom?

Agreed..this time around though I don't think all the politicos here will be stupid enough to step in the pile the way Reagan did. The song sounds very similar to "The Rising"...but I like it. Already pre-ordered "Wrecking Ball"
-
I am a bit confused with good old Bruce. Maybe it is the american way of thought, but I don't really see the relevance of his lyrics with his current financial status. Please take into account that I love both his music and lyrics as a unique combination that leads very close to what we refer as art (it is actually mass produced and sold art, and that makes much of the difference). But maybe this is not the place to discuss such things.
-
US tour dates are out. I don't think I'm going to make any shows this year. I've already seen Bruce & the E Street Band four times over the last few years and it's just not going to be the same without Clarence.
-
I'm a Bruce fan too
I remember when he went in my town homeSaint-Etienne in 85, in the legendary "stade Goeffroy Guichard".
My old brother wanted to see him, but my parents no....
Bruce gave all of his benefits from the gig to coal miners fellowship (Saint-Etienne was a coalmine town)
My english teacher used Born in the USA during lessons ! one of the most understood songs in rock history !
I've seen him in lYon in 93
a 3 hours concert, great memories
Bruce started the gig alone with his acoustic guitar for several songs
talking in french with the audience
and then, the whole band....woooow !
Bruce playing the star spangled banner ala Jimi, as intro for Born in the USA Nice !
I like his career from the beginning.
A great man, a great songwriter, a great showman, a great musician...well Bruce

I'm going to see Bruce in Cologne 27 may 2012 for the first time ;D

Picked up "Wrecking Ball" today...fantastic album! Love it..love it..love it!!! ;D
-
Yeah, got Wrecking Ball for my wife's birthday...
Terrific production, a mix of old school gospel vibe with modern production beats - Im really enjoying it. There is a fair bit of Irish / Celtic instrumentation too - modern Knopfler fans would approve I'm sure. ;)
-
Sooo... I saw the Boss live for the first time ever in Frankfurt last night and am COMPLETELY blown away. Whoa, what a show!!!!
-
Its one of the best shows one can attend...
I saw him twice, once with the Seegers Band Sessions and it was spectacular, with the stage full of musicians and encouraging everyone to jump and dance on the stage, and other one with the E Street Band, and that was, really, impressive...

I'm still totally stunned... Sound was great, even a bit too silent at times as the aeroplanes flying over the stadium were clearly audible (damn nearby airport). But to keep that high qality over three and a half hours, rocking, smiling - that's just amazing. I can't think of any other artist who does that. And Bruce's fans are also very nice. Smiling, happy faces all around me. Perfect concert experience! (By the way, can't believe Bruce and MK are the same age...)
-
I'm always a bit ambivalent about Bruce. I saw a concert on the Seeger Sessions tour and absolutely loved it. I also saw him on the "Tom Joad" tour, which I enjoyed but was not overwhelmed. I've never seen him live with the E-Street Band, though I thought "The Wild, The Innocent & the E Street Shuffle" was a pretty damn good album. My favourite Springsteen album, however, is probably "Nebraska"
-
"The Wild & Innocent..." is amazing! Such great songs and arrangements.
I bought 'Darkness On The Edge Of Town' on Bluray, it's really only interesting if your a die hard fan OR a muso interested in the studio process, great footage of that. A young Jimmy Iovine as the engineer/budding producer...
Glad you enjoyed the concerts GH, love me some live 75-85 Bruce boxset!!! :)
-
I only know two of his albums really well, "The Rising" and "Wrecking Ball". Need to dive into his back catalogue now... I really liked "Youngstown" live, so maybe I should try "The Ghost Of Tom Joad" next?
-
No, you should try all his albums up until 1984 (Born in the USA). His second album "the wild, the innocent and the E street band" is by far my favorite, but all the albums up until 1984 are great as a whole. The rest are good, above average, but have many weak moments.
-
is the E STREET SHUFFLE
;D ;D ;D
I like ALL his records until THE RISING, thats the last record that its really good, the rest are ok, but thats all.
I find Wrecking Ball really boring, the worst record by far in years.
-
is the E STREET SHUFFLE
Thanks for the correction. The wild, the innocent and the E street shuffle. I am getting old. :'(

I think I read it in Michael Oldfield's book.

Just realized I have, and like it very much, this Pete Seeger sessions cd. Good stuff!
-
We caught the Seeger Sessions tour in Manchester. We'd been away and came back to find it was on imminently but we had no tickets, the box office had none and the internet prices were a bit steep. I can't recall exactly why we missed news of the show but I contacted someone I've met who'd organised some Springsteen fan things in the past and he was able to turn up a couple of tickets - not the best seats but not too bad. I was really glad we made the effort because it was a fun show.
In Berlin recently, Springsteen opened with "When I Leave Berlin", a song written by an old folkie called Wizz Jones - in fact, the title song from one of his CDs. I saw Wizz Jones quite a few times in my youth and he was a classic folkie - bearded, spent his life playing mainly small folk clubs around the country, used to go hitch-hiking down to the south of France and to Paris, busked a bit, played all sorts of songs from here, there and everywhere, wrote a few himself, was in folk-cum-bluegrass duo with someone called Pete Stanley for a while (saw them, too) and has been in and around the British folk scene for decades.
I'll stick him the "Unknown Greats" thread with a reference to this post.

At first I wanted to write that the thief that is Bruce stole the melody from "his" song "Shenandoah" from our beloved Knopf, until I entered the title into YT and realized it originates from an American trad. Arrangement, so who ripped of who here? That Pete Seeger sessions cd is reaaaaaaly good folks. Pay me my money down --> brilliant!

Thanks for the hint, listening to it right now ("Pay me my money down"). Nice indeed! I could well imagine Bruce and MK play that one together.
Oh and "Shenandoah" sounds very MK-ish indeed.
EDIT: This one ain't bad either!

"Oh Shenandoah" has a long history. Just look at the list of recordings here:-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oh_Shenandoah
It's a sea song, a shantey, a chant-song essentailly, so it's no surprise that you can hear it as a song that sounds MK-ish, given some of the songs on the forthcoming "Privateering" album.
I might also add that it appears in "Folk Songs of North America", a compendium of some 300 songs (with lyrics, music and a brief commentary on each) compiled by Alan Lomax, whom I mentioned in the "Richard Bennett" thread earlier this evening.
A further addition: Described as one of the best known of the windlass songs, it is mentioned, under the title "Shanandore", in an article on "Sailor Songs" by William L. Alden in HARPER'S NEW MONTHLY MAGAZINE for July 1882. The same issue reported "The French captured the city of Ha-Noi in Southeastern Asia, May2, after two hours bombardment", with all that meant for the twentieth century, as well as reporting the death on April 20 of Charles Edward Darwin at Down House, Orpington, Kent and the death on April 27 of Ralph Waldo Emerson at Concord, Massachusetts.

I got the Seeger Sessions and played it in my car for a couple of days, there are some true gems on it but then it got on my nerves. Can't really say why, probably because the instrumentation with banjo and all gets a little difficult to listen to after ten or so songs in the same style... I really like the idea and the production, though. However, now I'm stuck with "The Rising" and "Wrecking Ball" again. Waiting for my colleague to return from vacation, he wants to borrow me some Springsteen bootlegs ;D
-
Update: After a brief excursion with "Magic" (not THAT bad, some nice songs on it, I like "Radio Nowhere e.g.) I now got some Springsteen boots from my colleague. Currently listening to a recording of the 2005 acoustic tour. Wow, now that's pretty intense, nice stuff :)
-
Looks like this is turning into a monologue but oh well - listening to the Seeger Sessions live now. Woooow! :o
Still irritated by all those people in the audience shouting "Bruuuuuuuuce". I always think they're booing.
-
For quieter moments, give a close listen to Nebraska LP. Hope I didn't interrupt your monologue. ;)

Thanks, will do. No, don't worry - always prefer a dialogue over a monologue 8)

You will enjoy the Live 75-85 boxset....
It's brilliantly recorded and has Bruce peaking with live passion. The intro speech to The River is a great example.

Then again Madonna was booed off stage for playing (or rather performing) a 45 minute set recently.

This is great, finding a topic here about my other big favorite. It was my dad who got me into Bruce Springsteen.
Anyway, this year I've seen him live 3 times, in Cologne and Frankfurt Germany and at the PinkPop Festival in Landgraaf The Netherlands.
Nice to see there are more Bruce fans here.
Maaike

The Devils and Dust Tour in 2005 was incredible. I've seen shows in Dusseldorf Germany and Rotterdam The Netherlands.
Gotta say, if you like intense stuff, Dusseldorf 2005 would have been THE show for you. One of the best, if not THE best show of the Devils and Dust Tour.

Bruce is going on with his Wrecking Ball Tour in 2013.
Already have tickets for the 5th of july in Mochengladbach, Germany and will try for Nijmegen, The Netherlands.
May and june 2013 are going to be great, with Mark in Amsterdam and the two Bruce shows.

One of the times I have seen Bruce live Maaike..was the Tom Joad Tour in 1996. By himself onstage..just him and his guitar...in a 2500 seat theatre. We were about 10 rows back..dead center..felt like I could have reached out and touched him. He did the acoustic..blues cover of "Born in the USA"....the way it was meant to sound.

I believe that Born in the USA record, although it contains some of his best compositions, has not dated as well as his previous recordings, due to the extensive use of synths. And the original demo recordings of some of these tracks (found on Tracks 4CD set) are more powerful, despite or maybe because of being just a guitar and a voice. I guess Nebraska sales, no matter how good for an acoustic album, were not what CBS wanted. And perhaps Springsteen thought that if he had a message to convey, it would reach more ears with a pop/rock instumentation.

[/quote]Definitely agree with you Vgonis about the 'aging' of the album..some of the 'eighties' sounds on it really weight it down. The songs with a strong guitar presence..i.e. "Cover me" and "No Surrender" (great song!...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-YMRbh0OqM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-YMRbh0OqM)) are more timeless
-
I don't think it sounds aged
I love this album, the first album which turned me into rock'n'roll music
I love Darlington County, downbound train, I'm on fire, and yes ..I love dancing in the dark
-
JF i completely like all the songs and would put the album in my list of 200 favourite records anytime. (I used to comment and grade the records and songs back then, and it is one of the very few records that all but three songs are marked with 5 stars, and the other three with 4! I note that this is probably his best moment, but there is something lost due to the constant radio plays. So back then I had no problem with the sound itself) Although I bought my copy in 1993 (my 179th record-I have lost count since! ;D ) I knew most of the songs and grew up with them. But you probably misunderstand me. Even though I only said that has not aged well (not dated=old-fashioned, completely different ), means that it bears the unmistakable sounds of a certain time in music history (the 80ies) that the use of certain synthesizers has marked distinctively and they don't sound that well anymore, sometimes because they sound unnatural and sometimes because of their very relation with that specific age they originated from. I can tell you that I have an open mind and like many kinds of music and the 80ies is a very big part of it, so it is probably the unnatural feeling they create. I still like to listen it, but on certain songs, even the fantastic composition doesn't save me from feeling that something is wrong with the sound. But listen to "The River", or "Born to run" or my favourite "The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle" and the sound still sounds alive and real, even if there are elements that point to the time they were recorded. I guess it has to do with the sound. Even Dire straits, had the same problem with BiA, (and in lesser degree OES) even though I cut them a great deal of slack, for reasons you probably understand. ;D
