Hi, everyone!
I am listening to Mark's version of Restless Farewell from Dylan's upcoming Amnesty album at the moment. For those of you who have Facebook, you can listen to all the songs through the Facebook page of Amnesty International USA now. I don't see any other opportunity at the moment...
Lovely song... It's like a mix of Haul Away and Piper To the End. In a way... Whistles, violin and accordion. Mark's great voice... :)

Nice to see a "trendy" magazine choose The Knopf as a highlight on an album featuring over 70 artists.

Have I missed stuff along the line, or is this the first time I've heard MK cover someone else's music in a recording? If it is, it is some milestone. Yea, he's done session work for lots of artists, but this is the first cover, right? ???

Well, they are featuring ten tracks they are keen to hear, aren't they? And they expect more guitar work than in the original verison. So they haven't
heard it. But 10 out of 70 is also not bad...

Nice song, but how I'd wish he'd try something else than a Celtic/folk arrangement.
-
well, get used to it, that's what he does and has been doing since, errrr, Cal?

Grrr >:(
No, it isn't. BIA? OES? Up until lately, he's had the occasional song in that style and the odd element of Celtic music here and there. Fine. But now that blooming flute is E-V-E-R-Y-W-H-E-R-E, especially in the live shows. Why can't he just divert slightly from that oh-so-safe-and-proven formula?
-
Well, it looks like "celtic" is where MK goes to nowadays, and this Dylan song tribute is a good sample of it.
It started during the 2008 tour when McCusker joined the band, and it looks it got bigger for next album with Cunningham and McGoldrick for the recordings, and McGoldrick for the tour, and now, both "mc's" are part of the band, so...

Exactly. That's why I wrote "Nice song, but how I'd wish he'd try something else than a Celtic/folk arrangement." It's unrealistic, but we can always wish.

Restless Farewell" by Mark Knopfler
There have been conflicting reports about whether Knopfler or Dylan provided the highlights on their recent joint tour but here the Knopf gets the chance to tackle this The Times They Are a-Changin' track. Originally inspired by an old Irish folk song, "The Parting Glass", we expect significantly more guitar work than on the sparse original.

The writers probably hadn't heard the CD when writing. Knowing that Knopfler was known for good guitar playing, they expected his version to be more guitar based. What they didn't know was that Knopfler now is enthralled by flutes and citterns and since the original was inspired by an Irish folk song, well, what do you know - an IRISH arrangement of Dylan's song!
-
Oh, I see, was the "The times they are changing" part that confused me ;D
If they expected more guitar work, they are gonna love it!
:lol

Okay, I ordered the whole thing, because there are so many great songs and some great artists. But Myley Cyrus? Yuk indeed. I suppose she'll make money for them, but even the greatest causes sometimes have to stoop a little to pick up the money. :'(
-
I just listened to this wonderful song and I LOVE it! :P

I have ordered it and still expect it. But I saw Uncut's review and it was hard. 3 out of 5 stars only, but our MK got a thumb up, even though not for an inventive interpretation. ;)

On the strength of Tom Morellos performance of Blind Willie McTell I thought I would try his Nightwatchman music. I can honestly say it is f88king awesome. If you dont like Rage Against The Machine dont be put off. Go to itunes and try some of his stuff.
