MARK & STEVE: Regular visitors to Steve Phillips' Grosvenor Hotel sessions at Robin Hoods Bay arrived last week to find a film crew working on a proposed new project for TV. They got an even bigger surprise when they realised that Steve's special guest was none other than Mark Knopfler. Mark sat-in with Steve's Band, The Rough Diamonds, to play a few great tunes.

WOW! I wish I had been there! What a surprise for the regulars at The Grosvenor. I have been there many times to see Steve and his band, The Rough Diamonds, but sadly not on this occasion! Darn! I wonder if TK was there and what the project is for TV!
-
Thanks Jbaent!
This line is new on MKNews or you just decided not to copy it:
Further information on this project will be announced at a future date.
I like the term "project" in this sentence. What's wrong with Mark? So many "side projects"
And it was worth hearing (reading) Superval cursing! :lol

omg, why were we not in the loop damnit!
recording, i feel a recording coming...
-
I missed that line, LE, thanks!

Hillbillies tour! :D :D
-
Hillbillies tour! :D :D
How I wish that they book a venue for some weeks (like they did with the Ronnie Scotts) again for some fun!!!!
I missed all that concerts, and except the 2002 MK and friends shows, I never seen them live.
-
Hillbillies tour! :D :D
That's what I thought, dmg! Let's keep our fingers crossed! :)
-
Didn't the NHBs do a couple of runs at Ronnie Scott's. Maybe not. We didn't go to all of them but we certainly went to several. I love small venues, in this regard. No distance between the performers and the audience, not only literally but metaphorically.
-
They did them in 1998 and 1999 - I went to Ronnie Scott's Birmingham in 1998.
-
I can't tell you how many times I saw the NHBs but it was quite a few. The first time was the Lockerbie concert. Never much of a fan of DS (sorry, folks!), I really enjoyed the NHBs. Possibly they were a bit too drilled for me, in that MK kind of way, but the the range of material was interesting and there was a certain looseness to the whole thing - not unprofessional, just a touch freer - that I relished. OK, Ed Bicknell wasn't the world's greatest drummer but he was much better than adequate, carrying off his side of things well enough and getting better as time progressed. He gave a cottage industry feel to the whole shebang. Marcus Cliffe was a really good bassist - good musician, great solos and, for a bassist, very flexible and versatile - particularly suited for that type of show. The three principals need no comment from me.
Anyway, the NHBs brought Mark Knopfler nearer to me in a way that the DS shows never did. MK's subsequent solo albums have kept my interest, even if I don't savour them as assiduously as most of you. Thus, I would welcome a series of updated NHB shows.
And I can recognise Superval's disappointment at missing MK's jaunt to Robin Hood's Bay. I never saw Segovia in concert and, some time later, when I discovered he'd done a concert only 20 miles or so from where I then lived, I could have kicked myself.
-
And I can recognise Superval's disappointment at missing MK's jaunt to Robin Hood's Bay.
I have seen Steve, either solo or with Brendan or with The Rough Diamonds many times - at The Grove in Leeds, in various places in Otley or at Robin Hood's Bay and I always dreamed that one day Mark would just walk in and be part of the band. Last week, my dream would have come true, but I am happy for all those present that evening and hope they appreciated just how lucky they were. I'm sure they did! ;)
-
The two shows I got to see July 1999 were amongst the very best mk performances I ever witnessed, no matter if I saw it myself or saw/heard it from a recording.

Thank you, thankyou, rudiger! This is wonderful to see and now I feel even worse that I wasn't there! Fantastic! :D
-
Thanks, that says it all about Mark, just as happy on stage to thousands, as he is in a pub setting :) And where has his hair gone? looks almost bald :lol
-
and did anyone else see that gigantic camera as of 3 minutes? at the end swirling in the direction of the audience?
looked to proffesional to be from an audience member...AWESOME. i am sooo happy seeing this, NHB is amongst the most brilliant stuff MK has ever done, and i sure as hell hope this is a first step in that direction again...
-
is there a "alert" function on Youtube as you have it on Google?

That was probably the TV crew..from the 'project'. Has anyone here ever seen Mark play that steel before..not sure if it's a National or not..it's definitely not the trademark 'O' style..it has an LP body similar to Steve's. I'm hoping a recording of the whole show will pop up on Dime..that would be sweet!! ;)
-
I may be completely wrong, Hophead, but I think it may be a Beltona Resonator. :)

You're right Val..thanks! Found it...(http://www.oneverybootleg.nl/MK_guitars_beltona1.jpg)

Great! I like that in Mark, that he doesn't forget where he comes from. How easy isn't it to become a total snob when you're a member of "rock aristocracy"? Respect.
-
Respect x 2! :)
-
Also Steve's guitar is awesome, is that one of his own?
-
The video is deleted. Anyone managed to capture it before, maybe in cache or something?
-
Huh,why was it deletend!??
-
Which means Guy won't see our posts of the video, Pottel! ::)
-
Huh,why was it deletend!??
Try to play it...
Whoever upload it, deleted it. I wonder if he/she has a horse and got a call from Mr Corleone :o

If it helps at all, I remember the name of the uploader was Woodbassguitars.

And also wonder if Mr Corleone gave a call here too, as this post was closed for a while, between Superval Respect 2 and Pottel post ???
-
Yes, I noticed, jbaent - the thread was locked for a while!
-
Beware, Mr Corleone is watching!!!!! I

Not sure why it was locked, so I unlocked it.

Subscribed myself to this YouTube uploaders' channel. Will keep an eye in it

I don't have the technical skills to do so myself but, these days, you just have to grab those videos off the web pretty quickly and get them into your own system before they're taken down. There is always a chance that the Web Sherriff (some North American guy, based in Britain, who runs a business closing down this sort of on-line thing) will intervene. The problem is that the Web Sherriff operates on the basis of " shoot-first-and-ask-questions-later". He says that he doesn'toperate this way but I've been told that he does. As you know, I'm more of a Dylan fan and, within the video-collecting circles there, not much of a video collector at all but I have built a range of contacts over the years and that's what I hear.
Usually, the Web Sherrif takes action on the basis of copyright infringement. In this case, I can't think that there are any copyright issues, so perhaps there is more to this case.
I don't wish sound paranoid here, even in a minor way, but this could suggest that someone is watching YouTube, even on a public holiday here in Britain, to try to spot these sort of things..

Can someone please upload this to youtube again? As I understand there is the possibility to upload stuff as "not listed". That means the video can only be seen by people who know the exact link whereas a search doesn't reveal the actual video.

Woooha! Thank you very much!

And mine.

Sounds great. For me, this is Mark's "real" place.
By the way, if you're on YouTube, check out the clips with Steve Philips and the Rough Diamonds. Nice clips.
-
I always think he looks really happy and relaxed when he's with Steve - his friend for almost 45 years! :)

FROM MKNEWS:
This documentary, Guitar Stories, will be aired on Sky Arts at 10 pm on Tuesday, October, 16th.

Thanks as always ;-)

And you get STEVE PHILLIPS/BRENDAN CROKER playing together again.
Unfortunately we know that a surprise guest appareance won't happen : the gig will take place on october 5th.
And according to Guy this last couple of years, a NHB reunion is not something to happen. Wonder why, as it seemed to be really good fun.
Sounds now about this matter the same as Guy answer for many years about a possible Straits reunion...Strange.
Did Mark and Brendan ever played together since 2002? I did not realize that's already 10 years back now.
-
Anyone going to the Steve Philips/Brendan Croker concert?
-
I love Brendan, but Steve solo is amazing... you can see he was a huge influence on MK's style.
-
My next dream is to have a double CD country album of some songs with SP or/and BC.
Wishes
Allen

Dont think this video has been posted on here and I've not seen this one.

Thanks for this Banjo. I already have part of this, but not both songs together. The Grosvenor is great. We have been there quite a few times and it has a great atmosphere. :)
-
Thank you.
It take me back to the late 90's attending the NHB's @ London's Soho Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club...
This music is made to be played in small club.
-
ooooh,...those memorable days....19.07 and 20.07 1999....best shows i saw, ever...together maybe with Beaulie 2002 and amsterdam 2008 first night...
-
Some B&W photos from this gig

Still waiting something out of this project... The other day I found another Phillips album from the 80ies. Brilliant!
-
I would love to have a recording from that gig.. Les Paul can be seen on the pictures, that is a very lovely sight
