I never read this information about the first demo recorded by MK:
In April 1970, while living in Leeds, Knopfler recorded a demo disk of an original song he'd written, "Summer's Coming My Way". The recording included Mark Knopfler (guitar and vocals), Steve Phillips (second guitar), Dave Johnson (bass), and Paul Granger (percussion). Johnson, Granger, and vocalist Mick Dewhirst played with Mark in the band Silverheels.
It comes from here: http://wn.com/Mark_Knopfler (http://wn.com/Mark_Knopfler) click biography

Interesting info for the MK bio in AMIT, isnt it?

yo. knopflerized? ou etes-vous? :lol :lol

Silverheels. Sounds kinda country! Reminds me of spurs that cowboys wear, perhaps an indication to the type of music they perform. :-\

They probably chose the name on the spur of the moment. You know how young guns are.

Silverheels - oh, my youth!
Jay Silverheels was the actor who played The Lone Ranger's sidekick in a cowboy series of that name in the early days of (black and white) television in Britain.

"Hi, yo, Silver! Awa-a-a-a-a-y", said the Lone Ranger at the end of each episode, as the William Tell Overture thundered away and a voice-over uttered the immortal words, "Who was that masked man anyway?"

Howz on earth did us Knopfler nuts never hear of this news before?
I'd heard of the Duolin String Pickers, Brewers Droop & Cafe Racers, but never Silverheels!
Cheers. BBB

This news has been around for a good while. Summer's coming my way is mentioned in the official MK News biography for example. Not sure, but I think Oldfield also mentions it in his book? These sources didn't mention the name Silverheels though. Nevertheless, it would be cool to hear it. The recording must collect dust somewhere.
Here's a little quote from MK News biography:
While living in Leeds Mark made his first record. It was recorded in a room that had been converted into studio in a house in Pudsey. The song was called Summer's Coming My Way and it featured Steve Phillips on twelve-string guitar.

Here is what I found in Oldfield's book (p.44 on the french edition) :
Around the same time (note from JF :the previous page from the book is about Mark and Sue hercombe, so the "around the same time" isn't very accurate), Mark was able to make a record. Dave: "a guy who did the markets, I believe, paid Mark to go to London to record a demo. They went into a real studio and record it in half an hour, an hour. It was never released, I think no one has ever done anything with it, either, it just happened. He never claimed it to be of superior quality, it was a demo. A really good song called "summer's coming my way", good for its time. Given what it was and what he had in hands, it was really a brave effort. He was still really in the folk clubs in the time ".
sorry for the bad translation, I used Google and corrected what I can, in order to be the closer to the book

I know that MK has many good new songs, but I wonder why he doesn't record that old songs he has from that past. I
-
Jbaent,
If he's not even happy about many of the really good songs he has released, you can imagine what he thinks of unreleased songs AND songs that were written in his youth.

Sinchronicity. We were just talking about this song in this topic (http://www.amarkintime.org/forum/index.php/topic,2731.msg58398.html#msg58398), about Steve Phillips...

Nababo, all the credit to you!I missed it because of intense 14 hour work back then. I saw your post and thought that it deserves more views!

In my opinion, this song was not totally written by Mark, so there's no eager demand that Mark releases it. If this song was more Steve written than Mark written, maybe we could wait until one day Steve releases it, just as what he did with the Duolian String things.

I even remember Mark did played it in some interview. But I can't remember which one.

The interview that also involves Suse Hercombes mother?
I couldn't find it so didn't check it

Not that video. Only part of Chilly wind was played in that show. And it was Tore Pa Sporet, NRK1, Trondheim, Norway, 17th October 2002.

I didn't know Summers coming my way was ever played in some interview. Can someone confirm it?

As far as I recall, NO.
The one played in one interview was Chilly wind, a folk song played by MK and Sue Herncombe.

Here is the interview of Mark for Norwegian TV in 2002 where they talk about Susan Hercombe. There is also that little piece of the song Chilly Wind which sound beautiful!

Thanks for sharing Fieneke!
I really love this interview because Mark looks really trilled by the message of Mary!
Real feelings!
You think he visited her?
-
Very nice interview! Personal and informative at the same time. Loved Sue Hercobe's mother part and John Illsley's mention. This horizontal/vertical meeting was in John and David's flat, wasn't it?

You are welcome Klaas! :lol
I think in his heart he would like to visit her when he is nearby, but that he won't have time for that.
There are so many people that came on his path all these years! .......How often do we have people or
co-workers from the past we like to meet again, but at a certain point we move on and don't take the step
to call or visit them! ;)
Nababo I don't know the answer, perhaps somebody else!

And by the way, does anybody know what happened with Sue Hercombe? Did I mishear or she died 19 years ago? Is that?

Yes it's explained in the Oldfield's book

Fieneke, what a nice interview. It's actually quite personal. The story about Susan and her mom saying these nice words to Mark was very sweet.
Had to laugh about Mark meeting John Ilsley and John finding Mark asleep on the floor with his guitar lying across him (A story that also is mentioned in the Guitar Stories thing)
The story about Mark teaching Susan how to do finger picking on the guitar was so nice. Made me think, mostly about what I missed out on, when I was learning to play the guitar. I was also in high school and was something like 14 years old. Only....., I was in high school in the early 90's and it was Hip Hop, rap and modern dance music that became more and more popular and so a girl wanting to learn to play the guitar was not considered cool at all. So there certainly weren't any like minded class mates.
LOL! It would have been nice, if back then I could have found myself a class mate to share my musical hobby with. I sure am glad I did stick to playing the guitar and playing with my music school band "No Excuses" is still a lot of fun to do. And..., I will remember Marks words at the end of Guitar Stories about how your guitar can be be a friend all your life and no matter what you should simply stick to it. I'm glad I pulled through, even if others thought playing the guitar was a silly thing to do. LOL! Oh well..., now I can say it's their loss.
