Have we missed something? ??? Apparently, Mark has been to Hay-on-Wye again. I really loved it when I went the last time he was there and would certainly have been there again, had I known. :(
From Guy's forum this morning:
Question: I know you've said already that nothing can be said, but after reading this article and a paragraph on Mark it states "The former Dire Straits frontman and guitarist, who is about to embark on a tour of America with Bob Dylan, said....". Is another tour with Dylan true? And after hearing Corned Beef City and Privateering live last October i'm simply buzzin for the 3rd September!! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/cul[...]
Guy: Yes indeed it's true.
16.45 Martin Chilton finds out how words and books have influenced Dire Straits songs:
Mark Knopfler was talking on the Sky Arts Book Show with Mariella Frostrup about how books have influenced his songwriting. The former Dire Straits frontman and guitarist, who is about to embark on a tour of America with Bob Dylan, said: "I grew up with words and knew all the lyrics to things like Big Rock Candy Mountain. I can sing you a Bernard Cribbins song if you like."
The offer was rejected in favour of Knopfler singing, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, a section of his song Sailing to Philadelphian. The lives of Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon are the subject of Knopfler

No idea :(
-
Cant find any video of it :(
-
If you click on to the Telegraph link (on Guy's forum) there's a very nice picture of MK at the top of the page - wait a second or two for the arrow to appear! :)
-
thnx to the official news site for no fucking info at all. really lagging behind these days. sorry, but this pisses me off.

I agree on all points.
We are supposed to have tour(s) coming up and they don't say a word. I understand Bob has to announce his tour first but when it's about MK solo events ...

The photo is posted at Telegraph website:

13.44 We mentioned Dire Straits man Mark Knopfler earlier on - Digital Culture Editor Martin Chilton was quick to talk to him after his stint on Mariella Frostrup's Sky Arts book show. Here's a picture of the main man at Hay looking particularly relaxed:

Oh marvellous! I can only deduce it was a last minute thing otherwise we would have all been there like in 2007!!! Oh well lets hope someone recorded it??

anyone taping? pllllssssssszzzzz?
-
The Book Show is both pompous and boring. Frankly I don't want to see it and all I'll miss is yet another performance of Philly so not exactly anything new. :disbelief
-
Dusty once recorded something from Sky in HD if I remember correctly....mabybe he reads this and is willing and able to do it.
That pic ist one of the nicest in years from MK, don't you think? So it is NOT a law to look grumpy all the time. This one I really love!
Thanks Val for the hint,
LE
-
If there was an audience present when Mark talked and played, it think it is pretty sad that this hasn't been mentioned anywhere. Why hide his performance from the fans? Anyway... A wonderful picture :)
-

Yes, I do! I think MK looks wonderful and also very happy! :)

It's an absolute shame.
But somehow it's really good.
I know at least one guy who is looking for a good reason to tape something he was not supposed to tape.
-
Is MK gonna perform something in the coming days?
Like in 2007?
too bad that i'm informed so late i would have loved to make it **sigh**

Hi,
finally managed to sign up to this great forum... hello everyone!
It seems the Hay show is on again tonight at 7pm and tomorrow 5th June at 8am on Sky Arts 1: http://tv.sky.com/tv-guide#/programme/detail/4063/726.
Plus there is a Book Show interview with Kitty Aldridge on SkyArts2: http://tv.sky.com/tv-guide#/programme/detail/4064/228.
Sadly I can't get Sky , but I hope someone gets lucky in the UK.
-
Thank you for the info, stratmad and welcome to AMIT! :)
I, too, can't get Sky, so I hope someone who can, will record it.
-
Hi there,
1) MKNews has updated the news and informs us now about Hay and the TV broadcast
2) Hi and welcome Stratmad! Nice to see new members posting here! Where are you from (in Germany I mean?) Been to any MK shows - if you don't mind telling us?
LE
-
welcome stratmad!
-
Ok guys, I'm recording it. Just need to work out a way to get it off the Sky box.
-
MK is currently discussing non-gender pronouns. Beats hearing about Uncle Kingsley again.
-
Thank you, dusty! We knew we could rely on you! ;) :-*
-
BD tour confirmed.
MK loves Lady Ga Ga.
Currently listening to the first ever solo acoustic version of Sailing to Philadelphia.
Song for Sonny Liston is BD's fave MK song!
-
Loving solo Bonaparte
MK playing a battered old Martin that I haven't seen before.
-
This was great. As ever, MK looks uncomfortable discussing anything other than music or motorbikes. Looks great in HD but I think the only hope I have of getting it off is in SD.
-
Sounds great - can't wait to see it! Thanks for the running commentary! :)

Whatever you can get off will be much appreciated. Thanks Dusty ! ;D
-
Thanks, Mr. Valentino, you are a real trooper!
Hope it was not because of my comment about you earlier that you felt the urge to have to record it for us.... ;D
This is great news!
So he confirmed the BD tour. At least he himself is allowed to do that! :lol
LE
-
The tour is confirmed, that's great but at that point of the story it's not a big surprise.
What we urgently need now is a couple of dates to start working before prices -I mean plane tickets- go too crazy.
-
Are you willing to go the US to attend some Bob/Mark shows? Cool... Somenhow I remember you as one of those always complaining about Bob... my mistake...
For my part, what I need now is Privateering track lengths, mp3 snippets, leaked material and finally complete 2013 MK Across Europe Tour Dates!!! 8)
LE
-
Sounds great!
When will we be able to see it to?
Does he mention anything about the new album?
-
No album details.

Yeah... that's a mistake. ;)
I clearly always have something to complain about (security, part of Bob's fans, loud sound, recording policy, Crocky, ... ) but surely not about Bob. ;D
About the US tour, I first thought I had no chance to go there, better get revenge on the Europe tour and do something like 15-20 dates, mostly in june/july.
Problem is : I'm already like a lion in cage and I'm afraid the European tour may be earlier than usual, right after the US tour. If there's nothing in June / July, I'm f... and have to wait for 2015. Anyway, I'm having such a harassing year I urgently need an escape. Not sure I can afford it though... I'll have to be lucky on the dates but I trust Bob's organization more than Crocky's. :P

Just watched it on Sky HD.
A thoroughly interesting programme, made of course even better by seeing a very well looking Mark Knopfler talking & performing.
He's da man! 8) 8) 8)

I tried the links of Marky and Ustas, but it doesn't work here in the Netherlands!
I hope you will have time in future and be able to post the programme Dusty!
By reading your comments I am getting curious and would like to watch as well! ;D

Oh great. The tour is confirmed. Yee-haw. ::)
Well, whatever MK pleases. I just hope there will be a little album promo tour in Europe, too... Would be nice to catch him somewhere sometime in autumn.

Me again, after spending a frustrating afternoon trying to join Sky :-( But it's great to see how quickly this forum reaches everyone, and thanks for the warm welcome!
I'm in south Germany, and have been a fan since BIA. I try to see as many shows as I can of course, the last one was with BD in Zurich - wonderful, but a wee bit too short...
-
Did he played a song?
Lars, if I understood Dusty correctly, Mark did some acoustic solo versions of STP and Done With Bonaparte. ;)
LE
-
He played short extracts. The show was about books, so he was demonstrating how he is inspired by books.

Did he played a song?
Like Dusty said, he mainly talked about books that have inspired him, but his chat was interspersed with little snippets of 3 songs. Sailing to Phil, Done with Bon, & Sonny.(whilst still seated with an acoustic)
He seems to take these 3 songs wherever he goes now :-\ ;D
Of course I like these 3 songs, but I won't be disappointed if he doesn't leave them behind on his next tour, in favour of some rarely played gems or new songs.
Cheers. BBB
Btw. For all you red hot blooded girlies out there, just to warn you if you get the chance to see this, Mark was looking HOT, HOT, HOT!!!!!!!!! :-* :lol :-* :lol
-
recording, anyone, anyone.....bueller??
-
Can't wait to see it, especially HOT-looking MK! :P
-
I wonder if there is any video service that can be used by us for cases like this because I guess that if Dusty (or another) manage to capture the video and upload it to youtube, vimeo etc, it will be deleted for copyright reasons etc etc
-
but not on our private amit tv channel.
-
but not on our private amit tv channel.
Are you sure? Are we protected against the law?
;D
-
we are well above it :-)
we can release it via a private link right?
-
If dusty doesn't manage it, how about a video of the recording. It would be better than nothing at all. :-\

We've ben away from home for a couple of days, so missed this. I doi scan the Sky Arts TV listings from time to time but never saw mention of MK being on a Hay Book Festival programme. Maybe I missed it.
However, a couple of pointers, hopefully helpful.
1. You can get Sky Arts 1 and Sky Arts 2 on some of the Virgin Media packages.
2. Before we moved house, we had a Sky package and I made DVDs of several Sky Arts programmes. Basically, I recorded the programme on our Sky + box in full including lead-in and lead-out, then played the whole lot back on the televison which was hooked up to a DVD Recorder that had a hard drive. Having got the programme on to the DVD Recorder's hard drive, I used the normal editing facility to remove the lead-in, the lead-put and all the adverts, then simply ran off a DVD from that. I did not have an HD television then, nor a DVD Recorder with HD but the resulting quality was very good indeed.
-
Just managed to catch this. Mark must be wearing specs when not in public. He has a deep groove on either side of his head from the frame legs - not too hot imo! ;). Nice to hear the three songs stripped down to just Mark's singing and some finger picking on an old Martin acoustic. V good indeed. I think MK and Mariella are good friends?

Yes, I believe she was Mark's agent at one stage or another.
-
Mariella Frostrup was the Public Relations person at his record company. It was around the time of the "INFIDELS" recording sessions, so almost 30 years ago. I posted something about this on another thread; I'm sorry but I forget which.
-
She hosted the same type of show at Hay-on-Wye
2009 2007(Edit)- Mark was talking about the same books partly (haven't seen this new show, but STP and Pynchon), and Mark played a wonderful "Secondary Waltz" for the first time. I remember hearing it at a first appetizer from Kill To Get Crimson and loving it immediately!

Wasn't this show with Mariella somewhere as an official broadcast to be seen somewhere? Will have a further look...
And yes of course, Pottel, Kill To Get Crimson was 2007, Jesus that Guy puts out so many records you really can get lost... ;D

There is an audience footage (Hay-on-Wye) of the performance "on stage" and a pro-shot (Hay-on-Sky) video of the studio interview with Mariella Frostrup (including Secondary waltz)

I remember dusty telephoning someone, to record the programme because we, at the last minute, made it into the audience (dusty, marky49, knopflerized, manonatrack and myself). So the recording became a video, thanks to dusty. ;)

I recognize Marky and Dusty at 4:15... Not sure if there is a shot of you, too? ;)

Considering that at least half of his songs are based in books or ideas from books he reads, he keeps talking about the Pynchon one... Come on!!!

Especially since they talked about the same song and same book, although not very deep, five years ago...

Any news on the recording? I'd give anything :-* :)
-
Still kinda like that interview. The fact that both share a long history does add to it's quality.
-
Read about her that she is amongst the women with the "hottest" voice ever - not sure if i really can agree to that. But she is likeable indeed.
LE

Awww :D :D I remember this interview ! I was there too! ( Sitting next to Marky and Dusty)

Can we already see this somewhere?
-
What's the news?
If YouTube is a problem because of copyright issues; a usual torrent should be the answer.
-
Ok, it WILL happen, it's just going to take a while, it's proving to be a major pain in the arse getting this from Sky box to computer, but I have devised a way, bear with me. :)

Anything..? ::)
Is that really necessary? I said I would do it as soon as I could. FYI to do it online will need to go round to my brothers house to use his DVD recorder. He and his wife have just had a baby and me turning up will frankly be an inconceience.
I think people think these torrents just magically happen, when actually they are so lot of work. People should be grateful instead of moaning.
