Turn on your stereo, with a pair of nice speakers. Lay down on your bed and listen to the long road. Close your eyes.
Then you realise how GOOD Mark Knopfler is.. What a extrodinary piece of music. Such a beautiful melody.

I've always loved this tune too; when the guitar comes in at the end I just don't want it to fade out as quickly! :(
I thought when I heard Haul Away and Privateering that their melody sounded like poor leftovers from the Cal soundtrack. :-\

Yep. I love the 'Long Road'
In fact I consider alot of MK's soundtracks
to be amongst his best work.
Cheers. BBB

The same thing happens to me every bloody time I listen to "Brothers In Arms" album version. The longest version I got hold of is located on the remastered version dated from 1996. It lasts 7:04.

I noticed that these remastered tracks last longer than stated lengths too [yippee] which always made me want to get my hands on the master tapes! :P

Yes, I do carry these thoughts in my mind, too.
;D

I always thought that "The Long Road" was even better than "Going home"...
Its so great, with that long outtro...

I'm inclined to agree with you on that as I prefer the Wild Theme version, especially when played with The NHB in '97/'98; it was beautifully extended with MK pulling out all the stops. I don't see many Newcastle United fans agreeing with us though!

Its a different environment, in a football stadium the end part of Going Home is just HUGH!
At the comfort of your house/flat, The Long Road sounds sublime and more elaborated than GH to me, more beautiful, more arranged etc etc.
About Wild Them, I never liked it when played live, too calm, specially in comparation with Going Home that its the best end imho.

An interesting point... I don't even think MK is sure as he's played both at various stages in his career. Personally I think playing WT in a football stadium like in the Basel video seems a little out of place to me with tens of thousands of fans screaming. GH was more appropriate. At the smaller indoor venues these days and now his fan base is a little more (ahem) mature perhaps we are able to be more of a listening audience for the duration of WT but he hasn't played a great version of that for a while now. ???
-
About WT and GH, I heard GH as the last song during the 1996 and 2008 tours, and WT during the 2001 and honestly, I left the venues in a happier mood after GH than after WT...
WT always let me like with the heart in my hand... kind of blue.

Just like BBB I also like the album Screenplaying. It has so many beautiful music on it!
A few years ago my mother-in- law died and the family didn't know which music should be played
at the ceremony. When they told the organizer to search for music I said I know some beautiful ones.
So I choose Irish Boy and Father and Son, because they were perfect for her ceremony.
In case something happens to me, I have at my list of course songs of Mark. On top I have "The Long Highway!" ;)
I have an old live version, but I think that one is perfect, until Mark will sing it at a concert again in future!

@Fieneke": Check out the complete CD's with filmscores. Screenplaying is only a small collection. Long Road is from Cal, my fave soundtrack :)

And even older minds than yours agree with you!
Btw, I lost a good friend this week and prepared a presentation for her memorial. Music? Golden Heart. It was perfect for her!

That's sad RKD. I wish you a lot of strength and excellent choice of music for a real good friend!

I am sorry to hear about your friend RKD! Just like Ingrid I wish you a lot of strength these days.
I also like the soundtrack "Finale- Last Exit To Brooklyn", but in my case this one would be too long, it's 7.24 minutes. I know I would enjoy the music, but was not sure about the guests sitting there so long. ;)
