and here a fine example of jazz snobs proven wrong, at the montreux jazz festival in 82, when they were not used to non-jazz players performing there, listening to those shouts!

A big fan of SRV here as well...

A truly legend, one of my favourites together with wonderful, wonderful Rory Gallagher...

Both two of the best ever.

i just wonder if Rory and Mark ever met or played together. Mark spent much of his time during the 80ies and 90ies, helping-contributing his heroes, I guess if Rory was one of them, they would eventually  met. But the same stands for so many artists that it would be really impossible. How about a little Verlaine.
http://youtu.be/AREQLeFUcUc
I was thinking while listening to their albums, that what links both bands (DS-Television) is how the backing band works to support the main licks and the voice. And of course the fact that they both are great guitarists, with debuts at the same time, DS american sounding while Television had the spirit usually found in Brit bands. And that is why the bands found success first on the opposite sides of Atlantic.

I think that Dire Straits and Rory Gallagher shared one show in 1981 or something like that... I remember and old poster with three names, and DS and Rory were two of them...

This is not the one I mentioned, but its the first time I see it:

Man, you bring back so many memories. Fantastic film, saw it in a summer cinema when first released, and looked for the soundtrack right away! Found it a couple years after. I haven't seen the movie again, afraid to lose the good memory I created back then. But the music still plays. Wilco were very much influenced by these dynamics (clear acoustic-heavily  distorted electric) in fact they remind me very much of Neil :

and for good measure:

http://youtu.be/75pzxg_SCX4

jbaent, great poster! Kevin Coyne another long lost friend, there! But without Andy Summers on Guitar. By then he was with the Police.
Any recordings from this show available, (eventhough I don't think hey actually played together, you would have known it   ;D  )

but why the eff does neil not release that best piece of music on the soundtrack? it's like Bob not releasing Blind Willie, Mark not releasing Long highway.
effing masterpiece. been on replay the whole night. just ordered the soundtrack.
by the VG, another good NY cd is the mirror ball cd, with PearlJam, same kinda vibe.
oh and that 80ies thingy, This Note's for you.
and yet another replay of this awesome movie theme....volume on 12 now....

Maybe it is in the archives thing. The released one, or the one to be released.  ;) I haven't bought it, too expensive for me, and I also lost his two last LPs. I have Mirrorball, a bit tiring, though. And all his 80ies releases can only give a CD of good songs. I have all his releases and the 80ies are the ones with much less spins than any other.

I believe that 12 is very low for me, but it is headphones, since it is past midnight and kids are asleep.

The first archives run up to 1973, so don't bother. Next Archives might take some time to be released.  :)  Hold on it is just a passion, it will eventually go away.  ;)

Somewhere in this vast universe that's called internet, there is an enormous file (nearly 16Gb) named Neil Young Smothered. It has Young's albums up to 2006. But the really interesting thing in the file is that in each file/album you can also find as many cover versions of songs the compiler has managed to find. Studio and live! It focuses on Young's albums, but no soundtracks. It also has two files with songs from his bands CSNY and Buffalo Springfield. Some of these covers are really sexceptional, almost better than the original-if that's possible! ;)

My wife and I saw Taste live once - in Edinburgh, in the Calley Cinema on Lothian Road around the time of the festival, as I recall.  I'll have a note of it somewhere but I guess it was the early 1970s. If I don't have a note of it, I'm pretty sure we'll have a concert programme, though I think that was for all the artists playing the venue around that time. I'll have to dig it out some time.

The Caley closed down years ago and a nightclub called Subway occupies some part of it now.  I used to go there quite often!

Best cinemas now are The Filmhouse and The Cameo.

There is a fine record of Lonnie Donegan, called Puttin' on the style, issued in 1978 by Chrysalis, and Rory plays guitar on 3 tracks. The record is full of surprise-paying dues musicians such as Ringo Starr, Leo Sayer, Zoot Money, Albert Lee, Ray Cooper, Brian May, Elton John, Jim Keltner, Klaus Voorman, Ronnie Wood, Nicky Hopkins, Mick Ralphs, Michele Phillips and many others that I am not that familiar to mention. Too bad MK wasn't that famous to be included in the  sesions. The same year another Donegan record was issued, called Sundown with a remarkable band, but not as impressive as the previous record, and a Richard Bennett is contributing Steel guitar!!!
Title: Re: the known greats
Post by: twm on September 27, 2012, 10:27:19 PM
Though I probably didn't know it at the time, Lonnie Donegan was the guy who introduced me to Woody Guthrie's music. I have a couple of Donegan CDs - just for old times' sake really.

And the mention of Albert Lee links this togther for me, in a strange way. I saw Albert lee live on 3 October 1987 (the 20th anniversary of Guthrie's death) when he was in the group of British musicians who formed the Everly Brothers band during a British tour. The support act was Ralph McTell, who I had known a little way back when, mainly through his brother. Anyway, there were two concerts that day. We went to the early one because we took along one of our young kids to the show. Beforehand, I dropped a note for Ralph McTell in to the stage door, mentioning our previous vague connection and suggesting that, on this date, he might care to play a Guthrie song. Anyway, the concert took place and no Guthrie song. The following day, my wife was out and about and noticed the tour bus at a local hotel. Coming home, we went along to the hotel for a coffee. It was late morning and the musicians were just beginning to gather. Most of them, including the Everlies, sign our programme and Ralph Mctell thanked me for my note but he'd got it too late for the early show but had inserted a Guthrie song into his second set - 1913 Massacre or something similar. I also took along a copy of Pete Wingfield's single "Eighteen With A Bullet" and asked him if he'd kindly sign it for me. As he did so, one of the band (and I think it was Albert Lee) said, with a touch of sarcasm and with heavy emphasis, "Is that your ONE AND ONLY hit single, Pete?"

And here is the releavnt part:

Nice story twm! Have you seen any Jim Jarmusch films ever? It feels like he took your story a bit further with his (then ) short film (was screened before the film "Two in the soup" with a young Buscemi at his very best) with Tom Waits and Iggy Pop, which later pasted and created Coffee and cigarettes. Iggy gets in the bar and looks at the juke box. Then during their talk he says sarcastically that he didn't see any of Waits singles in the jukebox. And after leaving Waits goes to the juke box and looks. Then he turns and says that Pop hasn't got any of his own either. Fantastic!

I should say I have a lot of cups as well, but I don't like tea!  ;D Yes I think I have  heard their version of Dr.Who theme, but since you've brought it up, hats off to Delia Derbyshire for the original theme and the unique personal album she had issued somewhere in the 60ies-70ies. It has a feel of early Portishead. You know about her? I found a reissue of her LP (vinyl) 5 years ago from a former iron curtain country!

I was in love with her voice, kept me going through the army days, together with Radiohead the bends (issued just a year before) and Surfer rosa/come on Pilgrim by the Pixies. I have all their records and many 12'' maxi singles up to Third, including the live Roseland NYC. And a Beth Gibbons with Rusty man album. What do you mean? Something exquisite that I have missed?
I never had the time to dig any deeper. I have to confess that most of the times  too much official and unofficial information and videos spoil it for me. Would you believe that I avoid searching for info/gossip for my favourite groups? I like reading biographies but as literature, and I prefer artists that are dead or not to attached to their music.  I haven't seen and I don't miss video clips, because most of them spoil it completely for me?

I liked Dwr Budr, like a drone from a Durutti Column's album but with no guitars. (Have you heard of Durutti Column?)
I didn't like the Out there somewhere. Too repetitive and monotonous. If it was 5 minutes it would be fine. The good ideas were running low on this one.

One of the greatest instrumental pieces of rock music (prog if you wish to name it ) is Camel's The snow Goose. You can listen to it as a whole, since it is a concept album!
