Title: Art Work Privateering
Post by: Guitarman1972 on August 24, 2012, 07:48:23 PM
Hello Knopflerians,

I just read one and other underneath an other topic about the Art work of the new album. And it made me curious what you all think about the art work of the new album. But i would also like to know what your favourite album cover is of DS/MK. And what you think is one of the best album covers of all time. Doesn't matter which artist.
If possible also describe what kind of album cover you would like to see on the album after Privateering. Describe the style. Would you like something very plain, like a picture or letters, or rather have something like Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Beatles), Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy (Elton John) or Dangerous (Michael Jackson). With alot of stuff to discover in it?
http://rateyourmusic.com/list/fedderedder/rolling_stones_100_greatest_album_covers

Personally i think something in the style of the painting of Leonid Afremov would be nice for a Knopfler album. Though Privateering certainly is not bad it ain't great either imho. My favourite DS/MK album cover is i think Alchemy. Though I liked the cover of MFN alot too.

I tend to agree with DMG that the artwork wouldn't really stand out in the record stores. It's not a real eyecatcher. My brother, who owns one of the largests visualiser agencies in the world (Storyboards.nl) and who is a visualiser himself, also has his doubt in that area.

Anyway, let me know what you think.  8)

Best regards,
Michiel

I think the new cover is ok but didn't have the impact on me that STP, SL, KTGC and GL (my fav) did. I find GH kinda tacky and TRD just boring.

I love ATRR as well. If that was a solo album that would be my fav.

My all time favs are Riding With the King and Alchemy.

Most of the covers from that RS list are awful! That Blind Faith one for example... dear God... Nothing to to with the pedophylia thing, just find that very boring and amateur.

A few I like:

Rumours - Fleetwood Mac
Morrison Hotel and LA Woman - The Doors
Metamorphosis - The Rolling Stones

The first four DS albums were pretty good but none have been really great imo.  Really unfortunate that.  Most of the great, iconic designs were during the 60s though or even later.  The advent of CD's had led to less emphasis on album design I think.  When vinyl was king cover design was vital.

I agree with ed_raposo that AtRR was MK's best solo cover.

One of my favorite non-DS/MK cover is The Wall:

1- Love Over Gold
2- Dire Straits
3- Alchemy

1-The Ragpickers Dream (such a beautiful picture)
2- Get Lucky
3- Privateering

One note just to say that the cover of Shangri-la is clearly inferior (in my opinion/taste) to all other dire straits or Knopfler covers. (excluding soundtracks).

From MK' discography including DS NHB,
the worst : Golden heart and Shangri-La ex-aequo
the best : Brothers in arms (because it made MK's National legendary !)

I am in no way an expert on album art and I like most of them with the exception of the Sailing to Philadelphia one that always sends a chill up my spine when I see it because it reminds me of the images we saw on television on September 11, 2001.

1. STP - I think it's the perfect
2. GH - totally mirror of the content. Perfect # 2
3. SL - artwork is more better than content

-
1. KTGC - ugliest font, as well as content.
2. GL. Nothing special. A lot of red but it sounds "grey"

As far as MK/DS covers are concerned..the National on the cover of BIA will always be my favorite. All-time cover artwork? My top nod would have to go to Fleetwood Mac's "Mystery to me"
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Cgo7YYXogcM/TTB7P8k5iBI/AAAAAAAACIs/jCRtXDYZ63g/s1600/fleetwoodmacmysterytome.jpg) and a close second to Jackson's "Late for the sky"

For me too, BIA and alCHEMY stand out from DS era. My favorite Mark's solo art cover is probably Ragpicker's Dream  because I am a big fan of Elliot Erwitt's photography. Many of his photos would make a great album covers - here are couple that I particularly like:
(http://www.soulcatcherstudio.com/images/erwitt/Wyoming54.jpg) (http://www.soulcatcherstudio.com/images/erwitt_show/Berlin95.jpg)

From other artists I always liked this Pink Floyd classic:

and this Supertramp classic:

The MM cover was always a bold design for me.  As I said, I liked the first four DS albums best of all.  What's not to like about it?  I likened the blue circle at the side to the record itself, to the wheel of the rollerskate and to the big wheel of the fairground.

I was about to write that my absolute favourite is MM, but local hero got there first. It is plain like the Beatles white and it both visually and commercially works, since it sticks in your head. And the combination of colours!!!
I think that the cover is as much important as the music contained, as far as the commercial part. A fine or intriguing cover, will attract more customers, at least to listen to the music contained. It shows that the artists care for every detail of his work. On the other hand, sometimes the music is so good or the band so famous (The Beatles "white album" or any successful album that bares just a photo of the artist) that the cover is of little importance. Of course it is a double mystery that we can not solve since the extremely commercial albums tend to enter the public conscience even if their cover sucks. Dylan's covers have done the impossible, most of them have him on the cover, but they transcend the photo of the musician, into a photo of the times and events. We actually see a hero (that grows with us) that represents what we wanted him to be. This is not done only by the photographer/artist or the treatment of the photography, but also from the mythology weaved around Dylan as well as the type of songs contained and the cultural intensity of Dylan's music.  I believe that only 3-4 albums don't have Dylan on the cover.   But that stood for vinyl, and that is why I used to buy LPs for ridiculous prices, just for their covers! Take a look at those:

http://rateyourmusic.com/list/monocle/look_closer__visual_tricks_and_hidden_images_in_album_covers

As far as MK's future albums, I really don't care much about the covers. I can't imagine something that is not made, how it would be. I guess the fixation with MK is bigger than the cover. I don't like GH, I find interesting the STP (I took such photos myself and was pretty surprised to see a similar one becoming the cover art of my fav musician)
TRPD is a great photo that suits the mood of the album perfectly, ATTR is nice, SL is OK but nothing more, and so is GL. I like KTGC but as in TRPD it is the art that works regardless of the album. Oh and BiA must be one of the worst ones but I secretly like maybe because it has entered the public conscience. Oh and Alchemy, is the one after MM for me.

Just wondering. Nobody mentioned Hypnosis, with or without the Floyd's. The only Floyd album mentioned is the Wall and momentary lapse! I adore Hypnosis works, and I believe that they still speak to the people of today, when on the other hand some of the other iconic covers will cease to be regarded as great, once this generation is gone. And the albums as well. For example some Beatles' albums were significant for their times but are unable to prove their power to people who haven't grew up with them, following the growing of Rock music.

I always remember when Guy mentioned the players went to see Mark and the band when they were in Toronto in 2005.  Our goalkeeper at the time, Stefan Klos was a big fan.  Favourite song was BIA!

I admire tha hard work that Rangers has to do to come back to the Premier Scotish League, I hope it only takes one year per division...

It something like that happens to Real Madrid or F.C.Barcelona, people will go on the streets, there will be riots etc etc etc until they are back in first division... The same people that see how our bankers and politicians ruins our country, and do nothing at all. What a world.

However, my best wishes to you as a Ranger!

I can see the parallels albeit in a smaller scale.  The thing is that at the moment we are being punished in a kangaroo court.  No proof of most of what we are being punished for by the SFA and the Celtic chief executive is on the board of the SFA!  I admit the clubs former owner done wrong by not paying tax and we should be punished for that but the SFA have gone too far.

Any club in Spain has a far far far far bigger debt about taxes than Rangers had... But they say that Spain is different, and yes, it is.

Coming back to the topic, my country feels pretty much like the Privateering cover... thats the feeling most of us have.

By the way, its a great artwork

Nice and friendly written article. Some little mistakes though. I doubt that there is a song where a man has a dialogue with two COWS? And Kingdom of Gold is at the beginning of the SECOND CD, not of the album... but otherwise, nice!  ;)

Hi Michiel,

All I can say is it's a good thing I don't buy Mark's albums for the covers.   ::)  The only one I liked at all up until now was the cover for "Kill to Get Crimson".  I do kind of like the cover for "Privateering" but it's not great.

Same goes for the old DS days - I like the cover of the first album - probably for nostalgic reasons - but none of them really grabs me.

As for what album covers I do like - that would take some time to review (I've seen and listened to a lot of albums), and would likely comprise a full page of this forum.  So if I ever do get around to compiling it, it's probably best posted in a separate thread!    8)

If all teams that are in debt here in Brazil got dropped down there would be no 1st division at all... lol

On the other hand, strange as it seems, lots of top players are coming over. My team Botafogo just bought Seedorf and Internacional hired Forlan. Go figure.
