Title: Miss You Blues
Post by: Rail King on August 31, 2012, 09:42:06 AM
The interesting thing is that this is arguably the weakest track on the album. You've got to be REALLY good to borrow a tune from the Weavers and add 19 songs of your own making that are all better!

Why did Guy say it's not based on Deep Blue Sea when even the booklet says the opposite?

It's arguably NOT!  ;D Weakest track without no doubt is After The Beanstalk... No second opinion about this allowed...  :lol

I don't think it's a weak song....
The intro is very nice and MK's slide guitar fits perfectly to this song.
I haven't heard Deep Blue Sea but a traditionnal song that gets covered is very usual by most artits.
It's not the first time MK covers a song or a theme
- Dark was night cold was the ground : Donegan's Gone intro during GL tour
- Wild Mountain Thyme : A Shot At Glory soundtrack
- The Caroussel Waltz : Tunnel Of Love intro
- The Bonnie Banks O' Loch Lomond : What It Is intro during STP tour

Oh no, I love this song ! A real bluegrass song with a delightful Tim O' Brien playing banjo or mandolin !

I thought of it as a real album bouncer, will give it a second (forth)  try...

I have only heard the snippets, but from those, I really loved "After the Beanstalk" and was a bit underwhelmed by "Miss You Blues"!   :)

Read closely, I didn't say it's "weak". I said: "The weakest on the album". How weak can the weakest song on such a great album be?  ;)

maybe it is just not that version is what guy was trying to say??

His reply was strange, indeed. It would be ridiculous if he should try an hide the fact, while the booklet states it clearly.

Many of his replies are strange for weeks now, don't you think?

I stopped posting at  his forum definitely because I am no masochist... He appeals to me more and more as a bored and unsatisfied muso who has absolutely no interest in talking to "fans", even the Privateering stuff in general seems to be too much for him ...

He also stated it will be a COMPLETE concert, why stress that out when the download turns out to miss Telegraph Road? See the other thread...

"Bored" I wouldn't say, but it must be frustrating to be a musician and composer yourself, and then all you're ever asked about is someone else ... But he chose that for himself, nobody forced him.

He should've known it would happen. Guy's a great musician but wouldn't have reached this popularity without a star like Mark to drag him into it.

You mean "In the Heartland" was "Deep Blue Sea" without lyrics?  :lol

In the heartland chord progression is different from miss you blues, while deep blue sea is exactly the same, so that's why he had to credit it.
He could also have credited rollin & tumblin for got to have something

It's not the same I know, but the start of the songs only reminds me of 'in the heartland'. ;)

Yes, and it's funny that you have to credit a melody like "Deep Blue Sea", but you don't have to credit any of the old blues chord progressions that have been copied billions of times. Whoever came up with them in the first place (back in the 1910s or when that was) would deserve to be richer than Bill Gates and Carlos Slim together!

I've loved, loved, loved this song since first hearing it. " you didn't leave a thing behind you but the miss you blues"

"you never used to look behind you..."

We all have stories off MK's stories..and I'm interested in hearing yours if you will share. It's pretty neat...we're in different countries, many of us, ..but different adventures, different locales...

Hope you will. Here's one of mine:

When I was younger...I did used to look behind me, with nostalgia, melancholy...Then, I had a child-- I rarely looked behind me.

But this song...easy kind of memories..deep maybe...but those that don't cut you.

When I was young, I used to travel by bus to visit family members fairly frequently. It was usually a  relatively short trip (2-3 hours), but quite frequently I'd also travel bus-wise on longer trips. This song put me in mind of one trip...a longer distance, and a fun journey...the miss you blues kind...you're young, it's an adventure, neat people on the bus...sweet memories.

But the  bus driver! I  felt he tried to dampen the spirits of some of us on the bus. In my youthful and somewhat rebellious spirt...I kind of gave him the what for.

Anyway, a month or so ago, I went to pick up my son at the bus station...as he's now coming to visit ME via bus from several hours away.
"who's gonna fill your shoes" On the way, the radio plays SOS, which used to play so often those days I'm talking about, and, I think about that bus driver from long ago...

So, I'm waiting for my son and the bus driver gets off. A pretty portly guy...just like before! And I almost want to approach him.

KInd of cool I thought. Easy, sweet. Miss You Blues.

I must admit that it's the contrary for me :

I look benhind me with nostalgia very often, and more ofetn since I have childrens  :)

well, a bit mixed, because I think at the future when I'm older and at the past in the same time... isn't life a perpetual cycle?  :)
