Title: Privateering: The B-sides
Post by: localhero1986 on August 31, 2012, 08:27:54 PM
So, tell us (who knows), how about Occupation Blues, River of Grog, Follow the Ribbon and Your Perfect Song? Anyone willing to share his/her opinion about the songs? Haven't heard 'em but like to know you know. ;) :lol

Could you report somewhat more precisely if the EPK is included on the DVD? I mean, is it mentioned in the menu, to begin with?

And did you manage to work out where you can download the show?

There was no menu to start with.

But yes again, the EPK is part of the DVD.

Thanks!
I find it interesting that even for a computer affine person like you it seems difficult to work out where to find the download? No instructions?

Btw,

"additional photography by Guy Fletcher" - the session with the lots of guitars seemed to be taken by Guy...

Mark saves money where he can..

follow the ribbon (the 8 min song) is to my liking, but it is not in the typical row of TOL or TR, it is a beautiful song with some marky noodling, but no solo as we would like it.
 but i DO like it.

occupation blues does not really sound like a blues though. listening to the grog song now. canot be compared to something else (of mark'S work)

Occupation Blues - quite nice guitar and piano work on this, ... could be a track from Kill to get Crimson or Ragpicker, ... like this one

River of Grog - slow track, and MK whistles ;-)

Follow the Ribbon - mix with celtic sound and pedal steel, some short guitar parts, melancholic - nothing really new, but nice - without suprises

Your Perfect Song - very "small" song - easy melody.

Hi there :)

I'am a big big Mark Knopfler's fan from France since 1992.

Sorry for my bad english. Could someone also send me a PM so I can get the bonus songs? Thanks a lot :)

I bought all Mark Knopfler's albums. I loved Privateering a lot, especially  Dream of the Drowned Submariner and Radio City Serenade but not the blues songs (not my cup of tea).

First of all: Hello to all you guys here at Amit. I' ve read the forum since months and really like it a lot. I'm a Knopfler-Fan since i was 9 or 10 back in the 80s and still enjoy every single new note of him so much.

Unfortenately i still haven't reveived my (small) Deluxe Version via Amazon.de and managed to ignore the snippets and Album-leak til now and will wait for the real thing. Nevertheless i can't afford to buy the other two versions to get the 3+1 Bonus-Songs. So if anybody could help me with a PM that would be really great.

Thanks in advance!
Crimson

all those last ones on this page get the amazon.de song from me per mail,...now. the other three songs should come from elsewhere, already sent out 25 emails today with this friggin song. and it is a bit more difficult to get to so i have no issue to share that. the three others are a different ballgame in my eyes. enjoy!

Ok. 1st listen. Loved them all (of course)
1st impressions:
Occupation Blues reminded me of Don't crash the ambulance.
River of grog reminded me of Madame Geneva.
Follow the ribbon. Definitely my favourite, & the most original new MK song
 Imo.
Your perfect song has lovely flute, but weird keyboard sounds from Guy Fletcher.
Right, gonna take me another listen or 5 ;-)

Thanks to all ! I am listening to the three bonus songs, it is a nice MK's work.

My favorite songs of Privateering (in order) :

1- Dream of the Drowned Submariner
2- Radio City Serenade
3- Privateering
4-Redbud Tree
5-Haul Away
6-Follow The Ribbon

River of grog is like a first attempt by MK on the acoustic guitar in front of his musicians!
It's a nice little song!
Occupation blues makes me think of Les Boys .
Follow the ribbon, like your perfect song is a celtic-country song mixing pedal steel and celtic instruments.
Just like Radio city serenade, trumpet, sax, celtic... MK mixing style !

I listened to Follow the Ribbon, what a good song, surprised it didn't make the cut for the main album!
The other B sides, I rate just a tad above dross

Still, the album is the  best recordings the man has made in many a year ; very close to STP in terms of quality, and light years from KTGC !
Title: Re: Privateering: The B-sides
Post by: Fletch on September 02, 2012, 01:33:22 AM
Loved them all on the first listen. There's no doubt in me that this is a bunch of songs I can listen to as a whole, whereas I skip songs on every other solo cd (except SL). I know this was a work in progress Pre Bob tour, but if this pattern continues I'm already looking forward to the next double record!!

Many thanks to the kind sharers.

did i mention that the live recordings are awesome? they are so...different..
Yes they are great, except from drumming on STP  :-\

Being a drummer myself, I have to agree on that one. But on the other end, I love the way Ian Thomas plays overal. I mean when you listen to the other tracks, it's played with much more enthusiastic. At least that's what I feel ;D.  Cheers

Can someone please send me a link for 'Your Perfect Song????????????? :lol

I've ordered the Deluxe Box Set from MK.com so i'll wait for the other 3 bonus songs.

Also, people are always saying that they have downloaded live concerts already, now with getting the box set i'll download the one off the card but i'd love another 1 or 2 to make sure i have a wide range so could anyone link me somehwere to get the concerts? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

MUCH, MUCH APPRECIATED

As far as I know there is only one concert for download available and that's Madrid 2010, missing Telegraph Road. You can't choose a concert yourself.

On what I heard from the rehearsals I don't feel the same. It's more messy. The way Danny is drumming adds a lot to the music but it gives a comfortable feeling. It's more tight, don't know if I use the right word.

It might have been Ian's first take on the old songs, we should not forget - during the tour he probably learned more about them and would maybe sound different if he played them today...

on the other hand, when Danny came into the band in 2005, we rocked the house away from the first second...  ;D

Agreed, I also hear a few mistakes he makes in the other songs, so now and then. But I also mean how they play live now, or on the album. Danny Cummings is a great drummer, no doubt! But he always plays safe. And it's less challenging to do, and to listen to. I know it's more with a comfortable feeling, I can see that. But it's sometimes even boring, like in Brothers in Arms live, (please don't kill me! :lol). Love both drummers, but still prefer the style of Ian Thomas ;D. But It's ofcourse all a matter of taste :).

I was at, i think, the first live concert Danny played after Chad left the band - Lisbon 2005.
He did a wonderful job. I've always enjoyed his take on Sultans - very "clean".
For what I can tell Ian Thomas is a great drummer too. Seems a bit more consistent in the blues section. I may be wrong.

PS. Can someone PM me "Your perfect Song"? PLease...

Thanks to the kind members for the pm, I even got two of them!
Right now I'm in love with River of Grog, just MK and his guitar, and that amazing voice... -  it reminds me a little of Madame Geneva.
Anyway, does anyone know if the lyrics of the bonus songs can be found somewhere?Seems like on MK.com they' re still missing

Hi all,

If it's not very rude from me, could anyone pm me to get the bonus songs?

I've bought the Deluxe edition and I'm eagerly awaiting for it since I haven't downloaded the album in order to preserve that special moment when you play it for the first time... I regret having listened to the snippets so many times!!

Thanks in advance, much appreciated  :)

Sorry Ingrid to be pedantic, but these rehearsals took place BEFORE or BECAUSE OF the Dylan tour me thinks... therefore he maybe played in the studio during the recordings, but certainly has no touch with the standard songs before?  ::)

Then it makes a little more sense to me LE and you're not pedantic. Always happy to hear peoples opinion. But I'm not impressed because his style is not mine. For me it sounds messy, doesn't give me a quiet listen.

Actually the 4 extra songs are fine, but I especially fell in love with "Occupation Blues". Very poweful melody, wonderful piano and voice...
Such a song really deserved to be on the main album and not to be only for a handful of people who can afford a Super Deluxe Box which has no other value than these 3 songs. I really hate these marketing practices !

Hi,

After much listening to the four bonus tracks, I think I'm ready to share my opinion about them. The songs " Occupation Blues " and " Follow The Ribbons " should have been on the double album.

I think that OB should have been the first song on disc 2. Then " Kingdom Of Gold " as the third track instead of " Radio City Seranade ". Goodbye to that song. Don't fit with the other material.

As the closing song at disc 2, I really prefer FTR instead of " After The Beanstalk ", which I don't like.

Now it's pretty near the perfect album or what ?

Take care...

You said russian? It's funny, because we have old band called 'Secret' and their song 'Privet' ('Hi!' in English') intro has very similar riff in it. From first listen Occupation Blues remimded this tune to me. I'll give the link in a minute.

Riff is very different of course, but feeling is pretty close :D Just little funny sound-alike.

Answered, Max, check out your PM ;)

It's amazing how much music can say. Western Europe feeling just with couple of notes. Postcards from Paraguay also have same feeling of non-British music and that is more interesting it also have minor 7 flat 5 chord, like Occupation blues. Rare chord for MK, another song with it is Rudiger.

Oh, it's foma again with his ridiculous music theory ;D

I 100% about your sentence about Follow The Ribbon and Bob Dylan, it was totally clear that thsi song has Dylan relations..

Also, for me, it was 100% clear that Occupation Blues is about France - of course. Some people stated at AMIT lately that it reminded them of Russia, because of the melody, and I was really astonished about that. I am not saying that I am not totally wrong, but it is just so clear for me!  ;)

It is a Cha Cha Cha, isn't it? Would there maybe some South American influence because of that?
