obviously they like each other mucho, i do too, so let's discuss anything Bob-Mark related here.
over on ER (http://expectingrain.com/discussions/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=71708) they seem to assume the song Pay in Blood has the same chord progression as Darling Pretty, as i have not heard the album yet (my deluxe edition is to arrive on friday :lol ) i cannot confirm it, but i will as soon as i receive.
when will guy start this friggin dylan tour diary now, they must be rehearsing now...!!!
-
I'm listening to Pay in Blood as I write this and there is only a passing resemblance , but it would never have entered my head at all unless it had been brought to my attention. Pay in Blood is probably the best of the five songs I have heard so far, but ruined, for me, by Bob's gargling voice!

I'm afraid I won't even buy this album

I got a link yesterday ( ;) ) with Dylan leaks but it isn't working in Germany due to territorial restrictions blablabla.... Is there a chance to listen to the first leaked songs already? Pottel?
However, concerning this thread:
I am sure Follow The Ribbon is very much Dylan influenced. I love this song. At AMIT it seems Occupation Blues is much more loved. However the monotone and repititous melody does it for me very well. The song deserves every single of the 8 minutes playing time. First I thought of another Civil War Soldier story, but I guess it is more some kind of ... what? barnstormer, stroller? Whatever??
Also, the idea that Dylan was influenced by Mark and not only vice versa has something surprising for me. Everybody thinks of course that Mark has the great chance and "received an audience" from Big Bob, but why should Bob not appreciate Mark's contributions as well? It is reported Bob seemed to love "Song For Sonny Liston", which immediatley made Mark so proud to write another song about Sonny.... ;D (tongue-in-cheek ...)

both respect each other bigtime. common knowledge. reocurring thing with Bob and his love of mark :-)
-
While I love them both, and while it's hard to compare them, I think they could both learn from each other:
Mark is the better songwriter. Yes, I mean that. Dylan often just takes a traditional song scheme and fills it with cryptic lyrics (some of which he lifts from old poets ...). He should remind himself of the fact that he used to write great melodies, too
-
Bob is the better producer. Yes, I mean that. While Mark sometimes still washes his songs with fabric softener (or allows Guy Fletcher to do so), Dylan shows more character. The way an album like "Love and Theft" was produced is exactly the way "Privateering" should have been produced, in my opinion.
I agree, but would also say that Privateering is a step in the right direction, compared with the last solo albums...

Privateering is just right for me. But if the above referred to everyithing Mark has done from 1990 to 2009 id say "Well said!"

I've listened to "Tempest" over the weekend, and while there is great stuff on it (favourites at the moment are "Narrow Way" and "Soon after Midnight"), I must say that I'm a bit disappointed. The epic folk ballads don't quite live up to older equivalents ("Highlands", 'Cross the Green Mountain" etc.), and "Roll on John" is just plain embarrassing. Generally, and compared to the unassuming but highly enjoyable "Together Through Life", this new one seems somewhat overambitious.
For me, the best Dylan song 2012 is "Follow the Ribbon". ;)
-
i particularly (based on 1 listen of the album only) like Scarlett town. cd arrived today, not home yet though..

Very good. What is that "kiss" guy doing in the vid?

Miming the "dead" maybe...
The whole "gang" of Bob is rather ridiculous... :lol

Yeah, but the REALLY ridiculous thing about his new album is the album closer, this tribute to John Lennon. God, I adore Bob Dylan, but sometimes he'd really need someone to protect him from his own ideas. "Roll on John" is worse than 1969's "Wigwam". If you've ever heard that, you'll know what I mean.
-
I kinda like it. I
-
like the album. narrow way, scarlett town and some other i forgot stand out for me.
-
If I hadn't just bought Privateering, I would have gotten Bob's new cd--though I've only heard Duqeunse (sp?) Whistle.
Funny how Dylan sounds like Louis Armstrong in that song. LOVE the video too!
-
You'll need them both, Jennja!
And don't get me wrong, I like the Dylan album, too. It's just not one of his greatest, like some of his disciples pretend it is (Rolling Stone, Mojo, Uncut ...) They do that every time he releases a new album, and by the time the next one will come out, they'll say: "Well, the last one was kind of sub-par, but THIS one is it! The greatest ever!" Same story, every time. And who could really blame them? This man is not going to live for a long time, every album might be his last. And you just want his last album to be better than anything. I want that, too.
-
Just had my first listen to Tempest in its entirety. After all the hype AND critisim I was kind of dreading the longer songs at the end... all I can say is, as a fan of modBobs stuff (Oh Mercy/Love and Theft/Modern Times/Tell Tale Signs/Together Through Life) I love the whole album, it's terrific! Nothing tiresome or boring about it, and the longer songs are epic.
Can't wait to see Mark and Bob in Seattle! :)

To be fair... I think Tempest is an equal to all of Bobs modern stuff, but for sure its NOT a stand out best ever album, it just ain't. But if you like the modern stuff, you probably will love this new one, I do.
It rocks, it's cool, it's surreal. And Bob rattling away with surreal poetry, if you're in the mood, is as good as it gets...

I have listened to "Tempest" 4 or 5 times and I like a lot of the songs, especially "Duquesne Whistle", "Scarlet Town and a few others, but I did find the final three songs extremely long and boring, to the point where I had to move on! Although "Narrow Way" is a longish song, I managed to listen to the end and I think this is one of my favourites. "Pay in Blood" is a very good song and would have been even better if Bob's voice had been less gargly. As you say, Fletch "...if you're in the mood...." - maybe I will be next time I listen! ;)

Yes indeedy do Val....The Tempest will make it in my collection someday! After reading all the news out on Bob, I'm damn upset about not making Portland.
"anything goes thread" hmmm? Well, I got a kick out of Bob's statements in Rolling Stone " wussies and pussies"( those saying non-citing is plagarism)
" those motherfuckers can rot in hell"(the critics who called him Judas for switching acoustic to guitar)...................strong words and the internet is rockin' with them! Loving, for the most part Bob taking the critics down. I always get sooooooo mad when others tell an artist what to do...not to mention comparing Bob to Jesus Christ.
Got to go read the article in Rolling Stone in it's entirety today...
-
fyi, we are discussing "Tempest", not "the tempest" here :-)
i like most songs except numero uno, the whislte thing, to mediocre for me (good vid though)
i am confused with the titanic song, need to carefully listen to those lyrics again.
narrow way, Scarlett town and that damned third song whose title i cannot remember, i really like. still prefer L&T, MT and together...
-

LOL! OK, maybe I'm all things Shakespearian these days...epic stories on Privateering...Bob's line " if there's an original line out there I could use it right now".......after Shakespeare...were there any original lines?
Interesting to me that both Bob and Guy did a song about Titantic...but I haven't listened to the...er...Tempest.

i was actually looking for that funny one with the four guys in a car bumping over something and being thrown about in their car (without serious damage) could not find it though

Does anyone have a copy of the new "Rolling Stone", with that already famous Dylan interview? I can't get a hold of it here
-
I've been going to all the Big news agents for the last two days looking for an 'import' copy - cant wait to have a read, seems like Bob is ready to mess with our minds again! :)
Btw, I'm revising my assessment of Tempest upwards, I'm loving the album more and more.. Tin Angel and Tempest are incredible songs... After Highlands I was wondering just how I'd cope with another monotonous 13 minute monster, but Tempest is more captivating with each listen. And yes, I still dig Roll On John, and ALL the other songs.... It's all Good!
ModBob is a shining example of great crafted songwriting and production.
Sept 2012 sure is a great, great Month for music! (and I still love John Mayers Born & Raised this year too!)

Just read it.
The man's crazy. Plain crazy. I think the level-headed Mark, and anyone in Dylan's circles, has to be pretty overbearing.
-
Someone sent me a scan of the interview and, while the stuff about transfiguration is just weird (as I have indicated in another post), there is much that is fairly straightforward.
There may even be some basis in what he calls "transfiguration" following a road accident (there is evidence of something like this, feeling like a different person, with other people who have suffered accidents) but he really does take it very far in this interview. And the fact that he just happened to have the book with him, the book from which he first drew this notion, indicates that it was a premeditated view that he came prepared to express. Dylan is a man of extremes. You just have to read some of his between-song statements from the stage during his "gospel" period to know this.
His views of fans and critics (in the context of accusations of plagiarism) are also very strongly expressed but, when he describes them as "woosies and pussies" (or is the other way round?), he is being hypocritcal - "pussies" and "woosies" are weak and ineffectual people, whereas it is clear, from the nature of his comments, that they have been very effective indeed in getting under his skin.
When, again in the context of plagiarism, he refers to his operating in the folk tradition and just following the exigencies of songwrting, I have a fair amount of sympathy for his views. If, on the other hand, he used this arguement to explain the same practice in respect of passages in CHRONICLES, then he is on considerably less firm ground.

Thanks, PS! I've read it. Is he mad? Well, to be able to decide, I'd first have to understand what he really means by this transfiguration thing. I haven't fount that out yet. And maybe he hasn't, either.

no matter which download possibility i select, it simply won't download.
can anyone pm me with a link/file?

How do you add a file to a PM?

I haven't read it yet, but he is a well known wind up merchant, some of the stuff in Chronicles is hilarious.

What do you believe the setlist for the Fall 2012 tour will be? I'm enjoying the new album and am wondering which songs he will choose :)
-
Probably the same songs that MK played yesterday and the songs that he played today at the two rehearsals shows in London.
-
Setlists?
