Just got an email from Universal!
Privateering is Mark's first number 1 solo album in The Netherlands!
Last time it was with Dire Straits' On Every Street!
Yeah for Mark!!
-
Wow, great news!!
-
Well, I tried and searched but am totally confused - The German Top 100 album charts (from media control) seemed to be the "official" charts in the last years - MK has not appeared on the list from Sept. 10th...
whereas Ry Cooder's new album is on 96 and Robert Cray even made a "new entry" at 36 or something...
there are so many different charts - download, single, album, every radio station has its own charts, I have no idea what is important today.... on the iTunes download charts, Privateering was somewhere around 33...
At amazon.de which seems to be the biggest and most important seller, the album was on 1 from release day on and is on 2 now for two or three days. Strange that it doesn't turn up in the "official" charts then..

Privateering was number 1 in itune Spain...
Which is also great because Spain is a country without legal downloading culture...

I don't care too much about charts positions, but this is interesting because a lot of people repeatedly claim that "Mark has lost it", that he "should go back to what he did with Dire Straits", "play more solos again" etc.
His chart success shows that his newer records can clearly stand on their own. After seven records no one would still buy a Mark Knopfler album just because they liked Dire Straits. People who loved Dire Straits but don't like his solo albums surely must have stopped buying them by now.
Conclusion: The (many!) people who buy MK albums today buy them because they actually like them. Which is how it should be, of course.
-
jeroen, got info on other countries too?
-
In todays hard times, everyone's looking for a bargain and with Privateering you get a good 2 for 1 offer! Mark's not daft and in todays economic climate this is the best time ever to launch his first double album! ;D

You talk as if there was no continuity between the band time and the solo career. I think this is a bit more complex than that although you are right on some level as I did not buy a couple of MK solo album, and to my great surprise he put out GL at a time I though that I was done with MK's new solo records and did not expect to have interest for them anymore.

Only for The Netherlands.

I am sure ustas will come up with ALL the figures... ;)

Here is a dutch link of this news:

Amazing!
For the non Dutch. The article mentions also that it is the first solo album to reach the first place.

They already did the same on the early days of the now defunct famous band.

Hey, Dutchessy, thanks very much!
That Hans Schiffers' voice is connected with me with a very intense On Every Street Launch radioshow, which I recorded in 1991 and must have 100 times during that autumn. Nice memories. It seems Mark and him have met several times in both their careers...

Good points, Rail King.
The one caveat I would add is that it's actually quite common for an album to appear on the charts in the first few weeks of release and to then just as quickly disappear once all the immediate buzz dies down and the regular, and long-time fans have purchased their copies. So the current chart positions for "Privateering" are only a reflection of that initial excitement.
Longevity on the charts though would probably indicate continued strong sales and not just that early, manic rush. :D And of course that's where the magazine and TV interviews really help because that's how much of the rest of the public usually finds out what Mark is doing and that he has a new album.

Love Expresso, in Germany it takes 2 weeks after release that an album is listed on the official charts (media control), so it will be next week. Today I was at the Media Markt and there it was listed as No. 1 (according to sales from the last days). At amazon.de it was also at No. 1 for days. So, the chance for MK to get on top of the charts is very great. Let's hope for it! MK against all the Rihannas, Biebers and Gagas out there :D . Would be the first No. 1 in Germany since STP.

In Belgium the album is number 8. Think because Pottel doesn't live there anymore :P

@Leprechaun: Thanks, didn't know that. I just thought the new charts would be from next week, because of Sept. 10th... Anyway, I checked and you are right: Cooder and Cray, both new albums were released a week before MK, so he will be on No. 1 next week! :lol

Privateering is number 1 in Finland! Could have never believe. No marketing or ads anywhere.
Modified:
Well, I was wrong. Privateering is number one in one album list collected from biggest record stores but this is not official list. Tomorrow, we will know official list. Sorry.

I'm proud.

MK is at # 8 on Uk Charts! Beaten by new entries The Vaccines, 2 Door Cinema Club and Ronan Keating!

Not too shabby considering MK has done zero promotion over here. Not even a song played on radio 2.

Some CDs on Asda and Sainsbury shelves would have made a difference and the odd appearance on Breakfast TV, but not bad all in all! :)

No. 1? I wish I could say the same for Greece, but no sign of the album yet. As a matter of fact I don't even know how they compile the charts here. I guess they can check it somehow, but most people with special tastes can only order from abroad...
But really it doesn't matter how many copies.... Oh no use saying something here. I haven't even heard the album.

I'm proud.
Yeahhhhh I am proud also being fan of such a great artist! ;D
Last week I told at work about the new album and one of my co-workers told "Mark Knopfler, that man of Dire Straits? ...I don't like his music nor his voice!" :o.........I asked him if he heard the solo-music of Mark and he said "No, I didn't!"........Then I told he couldn't judge, because the solo music is different and for me much more beautiful then the music of the time of DS!
I'll let him listen to some of the songs and I am sure he will change his mind! ;D
