Thanks a lot ! very nice interview with facts I didn't know ! Highly recommended :)
-
Thanks very much. Very interesting interview I must say. Lots of stuff in there.
-
Liked it very much. So signing and giving autographs takes longer these days because everyone has a camera... and he only does AFTER the show, and ONLY when he stays in town after the show, because he changed the traveling schedule during the last years... At least he tries to give us an explanation why he doesn't like the Get-A-Lifers anymore!!! :lol :lol :lol

Thank you very much. I really enjoyed the interview! Maybe I will get an autograph in Amsterdam! ;)
-
Thanks so much for providing the link to this interview Dutchessy. Very interesting listening! Would never have heard it without your post. :)
-
Great to hear all of you enjoyed the interview.
The interviewer, Hans Schiffers, contacted me weeks ago if I want to think about some questions.
The fan/autograph question (so we will meet Mark), olympics (didn't heard DS in the end show), USA, drummer (I hoped he talked about why Danny left) and the sleeve question came from me.
The question about the advice for his sons came from Ingrid. (Great to hear he talked a lott about Ben)
Hope you liked the questions.
-
thanx for posting this interview!!

Thank you Jeroen and Ingrid! Why didn't you come up with the question: Why no TOL? :lol :disbelief

Nice little Interview. I liked the Ben knopfler-Ian Thomas Bit. He sounded like a proud dad.
Also interesting to hear his statement: I don't talk about bob.....

Was listening with full volume and headphones and I almost shit my pants when the "winding tape" started :lol
Why no warning? Why? ;D

I really have to agree. This was an unusually informative and well made interview!
Nothing about the red Fender, uncle Kingsley or falling asleep playing guitar. I really liked it!
-
Terrific interview, Mark seems very happy at this time instead on the normal dreary answers he usually gives. :)
-
When he pointed out that Glen Worf and Ian Thomas appreciated very much, it came to my mind again what I have thought some months ago, that maybe the decision of dropping Danny had something to do with Glen... Maybe it just didn't work that well. Glen and Chad were are great team, and when Danny came up, who knows... The rhythm section of the band definitly benefits from the new drummer...

Hm, depends on what you find as "important/interesting facts", for me - yes.

Haha, border_reiver, I had the same! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/Fieneke2/Emoticons/Roflbig.gif) ........My C-drive is full and I got several warnings, so I thought it broke, BUT lucky that didn't happen!
Dutchessy and Jeroen, thank you for mention about the interview! :-* I loved listening and like others I thought it was interesting with a lot of new information. Mark sure sounded relaxed!

Anyone interested in the missing part of the interview? The "winding tape" part was send to me. Itis a 1.47 minute part and (IMO) not so very interesting.
But hey! We "Get A Lifers" want them all!!
-
Mark seems really energetic and connected these days. Great interviews on radio, in the newspapers, etc. Bodes well for the tours. We already saw it last year, so hopefully it just keeps going upwards.

Sounds to me he's doing part of the job it was supposed to be done by the record company. I never understood why in hell they don't work just a little bit harder to promote such a guy like MK, who is a good seller and always has quality songs.

Maybe I'm totally ignorant or na

Read an interview with Alan Clark, and one reason he thinks The Straits are better than any DS lineup (his words) is the rhythm section, i.e. the drums and bass (Steve Ferrone and Mick Feat). It apparently is very important that the drummer and bassist "click". Maybe both Glen and Mark feel that Ian and Glen is the perfect match? I'd guess musicians at that level would be able to adjust easily to each other, but apparently not.
-
Steve Ferrone is a mess...

Same opinion here about Glen and Danny. In fact I wrote the same in reply #16 of this thread! ;D
We are able to listen to the results of a great rhythm section on the new album! If Glen was the driving force behind this choice, it was a good decision.

So he doesn't like Illsey's and Terry's approach on songs, is it?

John Illsley was good enough for the band, thats clear.
From all the bassist that MK had, I would choose probably Marcus Cliffe, I liked a lot his playing.

Alan Clark is a deluded, bitter fool. So he really thinks The Straits are better than Alchemy era DS?
What a clown.
Anyhoo, Ian Thomas is a better drummer on record than Danny but neither come close to Chad, go and listen to something like El Macho and try to argue. :)

I second that. Couldn't have said it any better.

Chad is by far the best drummer MK had as a solo artist, but on live shows he sometimes was too heavy... but absolutly great in studio.
-
I don't in any way endorse what Alan is saying. Some of the things he's been saying come across as exceedingly cocky, for instance this on his website, a reply to an email that he posted:
Jules: glad you like those chords at the end of Romeo and Juliet, and yes, it is very clever how they change the key from F and end the song in the key of E. But Mark didn't write them; I did. That arrangement of the song is mine too.
Obviously Jules thought Mark was the brain behind that arrangement and that it was very clever. Clearly Alan was the arranger (if we take him at his word), but I think there are slightly more subtle ways of getting the message across!
I've listened to quite a few of the The Straits clips on YT, and to me it sounds as they don't get it grooving. At times, it even seems they don't keep the beat. So I don't know what's going on here.
-
Speaking of drummers, I still have a soft spot for Pick. Then again, I'm a great fan of the early DS stuff. Pick plays with the Gary Fletcher Band, and he sounds great. There's a clip somewhere of a tour diary with the GFB, and in the middle of it, Pick has a drum solo. Blew me away. I'll see if I can find it.
-
Here it is. At about 5.30 minutes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldNqslMI2n8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldNqslMI2n8)
They are rehearsing at about 4.40. They sound great. Must check them out more in-depth.

He was paid a good wage to come in and write parts that would fit the song. He should get over it.

It would be nice to hear Omar Hakim reproducing live what he did on BiA; from all the subsequent drummers who playd with MK, in my opinion he has the most similarities with Pick.

Omar Hakin is playing drums in the "Bring on the night" Sting

Sorry, I didn't mean to say you were endorsing what Alan Clark said. I know you don't. It just made me mad for a moment, and I really think he's ... well, you know. It must be hard to be an ex-member of a world famous band, and I can understand that he's proud of having contributed some chord changes to SOS (although I prefer the shorter, earlier and later versions of the song by a million), but to go and scream "that was me! that was me!" is just plain ridiculous. Go get a life, Alan. Or maybe write some songs of your own, if you can (and if someone wants to hear them).
-

Maybe Alan suffers from little man syndrome. :D

Although, Mr.Terry Williams was great too!
After them... nothing really new!:(

I still have the theory (all made for myself) that it might have to do with touring in general. Maybe this big scale world wide touring (as started in that year 2005) was too big for him - even three or four months Europe might not suited him anymore. I think it is not necessarily a rule that every muso has that traveling bone or nomad blood with him. Maybe he is more of a family man. With Neil Young, he can stay at the US at least.
Over the last 10 years, MK had a very tight touring schedule, I really wonder what Guy and Richard and Glen really think about doing another great album, but touring with Bob again in the US instead of promoting the new album, which follows NEXT year - god bless him, they may think, but also, Jesus, where does this guy take the energy from? I already feel exhausted just THINKING about a US tour...

Ah, I don't think it's that exhausting. Wake up, have a hearty breakfast, go for a walk in the city, have lunch, post some notes from the road, spend some time golfing, soundcheck, play 70 minutes of music, have a drink, go to bed. Come on, not much to complain about here! And just look at Bob Dylan, who is touring constantly. He's not exactly an athlete, is he? If he can do it, Guy or Richard should be able to do it, too.
-
Besides, the way Mark et al are touring is on a level most musicians only can dream about. Mostly top hotels, private jetting from city to city, the best equipment, top class musicians to play with, etc. I'd trade my day job any day. The only downside to touring in general is of course being away from home.
-
Jules: glad you like those chords at the end of Romeo and Juliet, and yes, it is very clever how they change the key from F and end the song in the key of E. But Mark didn't write them; I did...
I had no idea Alan had invented E and F... does anyone know where Eb came from ?
Seriously, modulating a song by a semi-tone... it's a shame Al can't just accept he's an exceptional musician without
pretending he wrote DS songs.
-
I know what you all mean by that luxury factor, but still: Touring IS exhausting. I am sure. Living with a tight time schedule, depending on so many things, and DOING AN EXTRAORDINARY GOOD JOB EVERY SINGLE NIGHT AS THE AUDIENCE EXPECT IT FROM YOU BECAUSE THEY PAID FOR IT is not something I would like to do for four months in a row. Not that I would reject the earnings for it... ;D
LE
-
I think if they started to find it too tiring they would take a day off between every show instead of doing around four shows before a day off, sometimes more. They say the travelling is the most tiring aspect.

bob is an active boxer, so i think his condition ain't half as bad as people assume.

From Dollars and Euros...
They are proffesional musicians, MK ask them to go on tour on october / november and they accept, and they get paid for it, because thats what they are, proffesional musicians.
Some proffesional musicians doesnt like to go on tour and preffer to accept contracts for recordings in studios, some like the touring thing. Its not like they are emerging stars hiting the road, they get pay for it, so if Mk ask them to go on tour and they dont have any recording petition yet, or they have it but doesnt worth the money, they say yes.
I recall that on the 2003 cancelled tour, Glenn Worf and Chad Cromwell were not available due other prior commitments or better paid contracts (who knows), so MK hired Marcus Cliffe and Danny Cummings.
Dollars and Euros, thats the energy.
;D
-
I know of course. I have no idea about the state of the US music industry, it is probably bad (as everything these days), but I could imagine that musicians from the calibre of Glen Worf or Richard Bennett can CHOOSE if they want to do some more studio work, just stay at home or go on another extended tour with MK... Two months this autumn, and from April to July next year, well that is something... They are not the youngest anymore you know... ;D

Hahaha, yeah, I know. And I can't stop laughing every time I'm reminded of this fact. Imagine Bob in the ring. I'm no boxer myself AT ALL, but I imagine that one little cough would be enough send Bob to the floor. :lol (Not that I'd want to do that, of course).
