Yes, you're right!  I can remember getting it on the day of release too.  I was so excited about it's release and I even remember where I bought it - Woolies!  Due to the fact I was one of the first to purchase the album, I received a free limited badge with the OES logo on it which is quite nice (don't know how rare these are).  Ah, the wonder of Woolies! ;D

I also remember where I bought it, it was a shop that no longer exists...

In that moment of my life I was moving from one town near Madrid to another one near Valencia, so in the proccess of moving, I went to the local record store and bought it in cassette!!!!

It was one of the happiest moments of my life  :)

In fact, not only does the store not exist any more but the actual chain is out of business!  The CD I have is the actual CD I bought on that day though, still going strong.  If it does break down now I can't take it back!  :lol

A question from one who wasn't around at that time; How was your expectations, and did the album live up to them at that very moment?

I was amazed because it was the first DS record I bought the very same day it was released, and as already had the NHB and the Chet Atkins cds, the new sounds in OES didnt caught me by surprise.

I can remember it as well, was on my way to the office, heard on radio the release was this day, turned around, back to my village, waited till the shop opened and got it ;-)

jbaent, exactly the chain of events you describe! Some day of release, but for me it was the 13th.  (because in Greece the Greek edition vinyl was issued in the 13th...) The store's name was either "Trust" or the parent company "Happening" unfortunately both of them shut over 15 years ago.

I didn't like the singles or videos (OK HF was fun!) but I was thrilled because it was happening the same time for me!
The record had flaws (as I said I could do without the three international singles, that tried hard to catch the younger audience or the fans that had a fixation with the BiA hits), but it was the longest studio record ever! Over 60 minutes. But it has at least 6 tracks that are fantastic, and that's one more than the (really better) LoG. It is still one of the weaker moments in the DS catalog, but 9/10 is not bad is it?  ;D

A question from one who wasn't around at that time; How was your expectations, and did the album live up to them at that very moment?
Bare in mind that we were growing older and the world of music showed me its vastness, around the same time. Listening to the new wave of Brit pop from MTV UK, was a huge revelation for me, and having more money (selling books and my cassette tapes)  I could buy older second hand records that were fantastic. (Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Bob Dylan, Steve Miller, J.J. Cale, Cream etc) Therefore the record got considerable less spins than the ones before them.
And a side note. My first pay check was 90000 drachmas and the OES vinyl cost 2070 Drachmas. I thought it was expensive, since most records use to cost  1100-1700 Drachmas. Only the imported reached 2000. And 2000 Drachmas was 6 Euros.

Good question.  Just prior to the albums' release I had bought the CE single in a Virgin in Edinburgh.  On the way home (with my parents) we stopped off at some relatives and they let me play it.  At the time I was really into the early stuff from the first couple of albums even more than BIA and when I heard CE I was disappointed.  I only had a few days to listen to it before my concert (which was on Friday the 13th) and all that week I was still at school, so the new songs played live were still pretty unknown to me.  Of course, the album had some tracks on it I thought were better and over the years it has firmly established itself as one of my favourite albums of all.

I did buy the single while in Edinburgh : wasn't that much impressioned but it sounded good. Ma fave was Iron Hand.

I was not able to buy it on the actual street date release but did as soon as I could and loved it from first play. PONO and YAYF were for me the obvious high of the album while HF was the low.

Forgive my ignorance but wasn't the OES tour the one that started with Calling Elvis and its long introduction. My wife may have played the album beforehand (I don't know) but, if I heard it, I'd never really listened to it. The first time I heard CE in concert I thought it OK. However, after several concerts' worth of it, I increasingly came to hear those opening notes with a modicum of dread. Maybe my memory is playing tricks on me but it seemed to take so long for the song really to get going.

Perhaps someone here will tell me that, if they heard various versions of CE live, they could identify the concert from those opening notes but, for me, it was the same each night.

CE for me was always one note too many. But I believe that on most concerts it had the same intro.

Yes, Danny must have been exhausted before the concert even began on that tour!  It had the long percussion intro to build up tension in the crowd with the lights out, the band would walk on stage then the song would burst into life and all the lights would go on.  Brilliant!  Or so I thought.  That, along with RAtR were the best openers for me by some distance.

Too bad how long never got played on that tour, and only 1 time ever..... Really like that song. I am also one of the few that likes my parties. And I am a sucker for fade to black. I also loved the b- sides... Was not too impressed, if not dissapointed back then, but now, as with Dmg. It is one of my favorites...

How long was brilliant. Like the old blues number of the same name, if you know which one I mean. My absolute best was Planet of the New Orleans.

I liked How Long but though then it wasn't fitting the album. Actualy it was Mark just teasing what the future was about...

It's funny, 'cause I never hear anyone talking about When it Comes to You. It's probably the one I play the most from OES. Wonderful feeling, singing, and soloing. It was great with Hillbillies too, of course, but I think the OES version is excellent. Love the dark atmosphere, the drumming, the rhytm guitar, yeah, yeah...

"Set me free, sign my release" - not exactly a cute love song this one.

But what did I read, Pottel, How Long is played once? ???

I was at the concert in Leeds 1993 when "How Long" and "Ticket to Heaven" were both played for the first and only time!   It was at The Town & Country Club and there was an amazing atmosphere!    I will never forget that gig! 8)

Was there in Wercher too for my second and last ever DS show, standing on first row in front of John. I bought my tix just a week earlier and had to miss school to go. There was plently of parkings (not free) but on the way back I could not remember which one where my car was parked...
The first one being in Paris just one month earlier and was graced with "Iron Hand" instead that I found a way better choice than When it Comes To You. But no PONO which for me was THE song of the tour :disbelief The break during TR solo in Werchter was nothing but unbelivable (well almost in my memories).

I like that recording myself - listen to it a lot.  Right between the recorded Nimes and Rotterdam shows, the band were playing well at that point.

I remember very well how I listened to OES the first time - on release day. A friend of mine had ordered the CD for me and after school, I was anxiously awaiting him. When he had delivered, windows, doors, shutters closed, eyes too, and listened completely in one hour from the beginning to the end... I was totally impressed, nearly shocked, because the anticipation had been so high. I didn't like Ticket To Heaven from day one, and still don't. The sound was really awesome, it was one of those moments in life..

Next day in school I was "interviewed" by all my friends - "so, how was it?"  - I had not been able to keep my enthusiasm as a secret... I remember Heavy Fuel, The Bug, Calling Elvis and My Parties on heavy rotation throughout the first months... years.... those were the times... and two weeks later my first concert ever, Dire Straits in Bremen, Sept 26th, 1991...

And next year I will visit the same venue again, to see Mark, 22 years later... If someone had told me then...

It is a Notting Hillbillies concert. Maybe you were searching for a DS concert?

I think OES is a pretty good album, lots of good songs on it. You and your friend is fantastic and I think fade to black is also a great tune. Iron Hand still blows me away. The whole album feels bittersweet though, like the end of a good weekend! I think they must have known this was the sign off album.

I wasn't lucky enough to see any OES shows but I remember the live broadcast of woburn abbey on radio 1 which I recorded, but the tape got chewed up after I listened to it so much - I was gutted. Was glad a few months later when on the night was released, would have liked sultans and telegraph road included - sultans on this tour is very clean / stripped back and the pensa lends well to it.

Would have been interesting to hear how Terry Williams would have sounded on this tour, a totally different dynamic undoubtedly. I think he was under the impression he'd be invited back to your but that didn't happen.

Hi,

Yes, the last DS album is a great one. When I need to listen to some DS, it's nearly always " OES " or " Communique ". There many good songs on the album. I really like the title track, mostly because of the wonderful outro. In fact I prefer the album version of that song. Too much pedal steel on the live version.

Songs like " When It Comes To You ", " You And Your Friend ", and " How Long " are top songs too.

On the tour back then, I'm enjoyed three concerts. Two here in Denmark at Gentofte Stadium, and one down in Frankfurt Germany. All of them fantastic shows.  :)

Don't feel too bad about the Lyon '92 gig;  you did get TOL live and not many people have the honour.  I have the bootleg and it sounds a pretty good concert too overall.

Nice reminisces by the way.  I love looking back like this to a time before the weight of the world crushed me!   :lol

God 21yrs ago!! I must be getting old!  I drove down to Sheffield for the 1st  night of 5 gigs at the Sheffield Arena, and for some reason getting lost in the centre of Manchester only a few hours before it started! I was starting to sweat, but managed to make it in time. This was before OES was released, and i remember loving OES when it was played, and the lighting was amazing, at the time i had never seen anything like it, even my friends were talking about it(who weren't DS fans)- how times have changed. Didn't know until a few months later that the clown running up and down noising up the crowd, and generally being a bit daft and walking across the stage a few times whilst the band were performing, was Randy Quaid, they were filming parts of it for the Heavy Fuel video.  I went to see them in Glasgow 10 days or so later, one was the first night at Glasgow and the last night there. I remember that the 1st Glasgow night wasn't sold out, maybe a couple of thousand short, I also remember Mark barely spoke to the crowd at all, looked as if he was in a bad mood that night. The last night he was completely different. I think by this time the album had been released. He played When It Comes To You  ---always sounded better live than on record.
A little side note about Randy Quaid, seems he has had some troubled times since  http://www.radaronline.com/exclusives/2011/09/dog-bounty-hunter-wife-open-letter-randy-quaid-gonna-get-him

I don't mind for TOL, I don't like 91-92 versions so much.
I like TR in 91-92 with the sax solo
