This is great news of course but I must say I am amazed by this.  Almost no promo and, let's say an uncool artist combined with music that is not currently in vogue all add up to poor sales and yet it's a chart topper!  I'll say it again - amazing! :o

i never saw really empty seats in the venues i visited (even the huge venues like cologne, mannheim or berlin), so Mark is still one of the "most wanted" artists in the world, i was on concerts other artists that did not achieve a sold out venue
Title: Re: Privateering - Album positions
Post by: Love Expresso on September 10, 2012, 09:05:19 PM
I was talking about this with a friend only yesterday:

Since I am going to his concerts and since I take care about pre-sales and stuff I never saw a planned show cancelled or delayed or moved into another venue - apart from the 2003 tour of course - six nights at the RAH planned, six nights sold out, big o2 Arenas booked, and always (as good as) sold out...

I remember Dire Straits in Australia and stuff, but I am talking about the last 15 years which had a lot of touring included - and Mark always did everything, every announced show, like a real trooper - no 70 minutes gigs, no deficits of any kind - just read and look at the so called younger super star, and you see how reMARKable that is...

So he has a very loyal AND big fanbase - and a very good tour management obviously...

It's so good to see these chart results in all the different countries . . even in these times there will always be demand for quality music, and Privateering is absolutely top quality!

I'm kind of out of touch with the charts, but I wonder what sort of actual numbers of units sold we are talking about to get in the charts? Maybe there's somewhere on the web where it is possible to find out.

Charts is not exactly number of units sold. If there are only sold 10 units in a week and you sold 5 you're definately on number one.
So you can't figure the sales from the charts.

The figure was 10,973  sold last week, in the UK.

1,2 million STP? Is that right?

Privateering will probably be around that figure in a couple of years from now, it will have sold over 100,000 in the UK by then, and if its similar to GL, approx 200-250,000 in the USA. The worldwide sales will be close to 1.2m . Year end 2006 ATRR sold 673,000 ww, (It will be well over the million by now), Privateering will follow roughly the same i would think.
I saw a soundscan figure for GL in the USA a year or so ago   on the UKMIX forum, it was about 200k IIRC.
Heres a few more chart placings-
N Zealand-3
Poland-4
Czech/Slovak-5
Hungry-10
Ireland-25

The good part is, when it is certified it will count double because it is a two disc set. i.e if it sells 125,000 in the UK, it will be certified as 250,000 discs sold and certified accordingly. The same for other countries as well.

2ND week, seems to be like this, so far-

32- Australia
6- Swizterland
7- Austria
2- Norway
3-Netherlands
2-Sweden(1st week??)
2- Belgium(last week no8)

The sales in Belgium have increased. The USA chart should be out tomorrow. Going by the apparent limited availability in the US, it might struggle to be top100 never mind top 30!! His albums are usually top 50 over there. I think his last couple were top 30 ?

So the official Norwegian chart positions for Privateering for the first three weeks: 1-2-4

I think this is not an album to be listened in the car, but at home, good earsets or a good HI FI.

+1     The only time I've ejected one of the discs..is to put the other one in. And as far as playing it in the car goes...often...and LOUD..especially "Blood and Water", "Yon two crows", "Got to have something" and "Bluebird"

Got to have something is a Dylan song.   :lol  Ramblin and tumblin reincarnated with other lyrics and production.

So you think that it is the same as well?  ;D
Yes that is the one I meant, but I intentionally changed the word, thus creating a new song as Dylan has. :P
Neil Young did the same with "Are you ready for the country" Check them out, one after the other and you'll understand.
Beyond here lies nothin'-Dylan--All your love-Otis Rush etc.

LOL vgonis!   Masses of artists have done the same -  Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Robert Johnson - even Guy's Bluesband and I think Can't Be Satisfied is another take on the original - the list is endless!    ;D

I must be complaining a lot, but I just think that only these bigger than life artists can get away with it. And it is not fair for the original composers, not just for the money they lose, but because the unsuspected audience doesn't get to listen to the (sometimes) far superior "sources of inspiration". It is different to do a version and name the original composer. This way they get the credit, money, recognition and a new audience.

I agree vgonis, but correct me if I'm wrong - R & T was originally by Muddy Waters, unless he heard it elsewhere too and so I presume it is out of copyright now.   I had a big problem with Bob Dylan's "Modern Times" where just about every song was originally by someone else (except the lyrics) and none of the composers were credited on that album - just "all songs written by Bob Dylan".

Do you think MK should have credited Muddy Waters (McKinley Morganfield) for the tune ?   :-\

EDIT:  I have to correct what I have just posted!    I see that the earliest version is "Roll & Tumble Blues" by Hambone Willie Newbern in 1929.

Val, I really believe that you got my point. I don't get the law thing, so I leave it all together out of this discussion. I don't even like to drop the ethics bomb. But it just reminds me of the Monty Python sketch were Palin claims authorship of every Shakespeare  work. Well it sounded ridiculous and very funny, but in view of these "new" songs I wonder.
I was only saying that huge artists that want to use something, have to mention the original source, if not for money, for a graceful "hats-off". We are bound by copyright, not freed. Just consider this unlike story: Dylan throwing a lawsuit to our man for stealing his music. :o  He has every right since the song has only him as author.
I know that all these have been mentioned before by writers from big magazines and newspapers that can influence the public, and still nothing happened, so who am I to mention such things here.

But for those interested :

Not gonna fall into the age-old 'who should be credited for what' trap...that argument can go on too infinity. All I know is that "Got to have something" sounds really really good blasting in my car...and I agree with Jbaent that since "Privateering"'s release it has been No. 1...with a bullet...in my car.   ;D

"Oh if there's an original thought out there, I could use it right now"
                                            - "Brownsville Girl" [written by Bob Dyaln with Sam Shepard, 1986]

Dylan took this phrase from an earlier song they wrote called "New Danville Girl", so kind-of copied himself.

Privateering is number 15 at amazon.de, and Tempest number 111 !!!!! I have to admit, that I bought Tempest, too. It`s not as good as P (of course not), but not so bad. No. 111 is really bad for Mr. Bob. Can`t understand, why only so less people buy the new album of BD...

Mona, it was a logical decline. The hardcore fans bought it on release date and then without any help (apart some rave reviews, no actual airplay or video or European tour) it quickly faded. I guess MK's fate would be similar, if he was as old (not in age but as an artist-his fan base is much younger and his heydays more recent) and rough (no need to elaborate on this one I believe) as Bob, and of course it was as easy to find his album in so many formats. And really, could you find such iconic songs in the new album like Blowin in the wind, or like a rolling stone or even What was that you wanted (I simply love it, and the Willie Nelson version from MSG is fantastic as well)

Maybe you are right vgonis, my husband is a real BD-fan and likes ONLY the older albums. He doesn`t even like to listen, when I put a new BD-cd in the player ;-) . I have never been an old BD-fan (grew up with ABBA , Saturday Night Fever etc.  ;) ), so I can`t really compare it, although I know of course some of the older BD-songs. So ok, he is maybe not as good as in former times - but his new album is better than i.e. Pink, Lena or some compilations, that has better chart-positions...but ok, people have different favourits...

I like listening to new music as well. It is not easy to like all things, but I keep my ears open. Arcade fire is one of the new bands I like very much and Belle and Sebastian, even though their first album was issued in 1995. The Killers have issued nice albums and songs (actually they did a R&J cover, so they are MK fans as well) but their sound is distant enough from DS or MK. So if you compare all these groups with BD or MK, I can tell you that sometimes I prefer them over the new BD album. I like time out of mind, but Modern times or even Love and theft are a bit ahead of me. But the last BD album I really enjoyed and still play it is Oh Mercy. And you are lucky with your husband! My wife doesn't even have time to listen to older BD records or the latest MK one.

In Germany it was Nr. 15 in 2012. Not bad. It was released August 31th.
Copies sold: more than 150.000

But more important: we get a Stratocaster MP3 stick of every Privateering Concert 2013!!!

Yes just saw it too! 30 Euros each concert x 64 concerts= 1920 Euros And this means no torrents and free live from this tour. For 320 MP3. I might buy one gust for the thrill of it, but I will certainly lose the rest.
