I met Mark (his pals get to call him that ;)) after the show in Glasgow 2001. I waited at the back door of the Clyde Auditorium for hours - they must have had an after-show party - with a group of other fans. When they came out I got Glenn Worf to sign a setlist that a roadie gave me and then Mark came out with some bodyguard. He ushered him into a BMW and from there he signed all our programmes for us. I told him to record I Think I Love You Too Much for the next album and he just smiled! I think a mate took a couple of pictures of poor quality, unfortunately he missed me with Mark! :disbelief

I did meet him in Madrid 2000, the same day STP was released he did an interview in a Spanish Radio, he signed me my STP copy "With love to Julio", great, he loves me ;D ;D
After that we heard in which hotel he was staying and a group of fans went there, we arranged with Crockford that MK will went out for signing, pictures etc and I got my pic with MK by accident, as he was in front of me, signing a t-shirt for a friend and MK told me "pull it", I was so nervous that I didnt understand him until he told me twice. Someone took a picture of the moment and I didnt noticed it until I saw it at the Spanish City Mailing List web site... Wow, I had a pic with MK that I didnt know!
And in 2002, outside the Shepperd Bush Empire, we were waiting for him to exit, Crockford said us that Mk will sign from his car, so when MK went out, we walked along with him until the car, and then I noticed that I was just walking next to MK!!!! Funny because I was talking with a friend and didnt notice it! When in the car, I saw that John Illsley was getting out the venue, and nobody was there, so I left the car queue and went to talk with John and take photos with him. Just John, me and some of my friends, pretty intimate and a great experience, far better than have pics or signs with MK inside a car...

So envious of those of you who had met Mark. It's been my dream. I guess I have to dream harder and I might get LUCKY in less than 2 weeks.
I did get a handshake from Mark from the stage after the show in 2010 in Temecula, CA. That was absoultely unforgettable for me. I feel that I need to meet and perhaps talk a little with him. ;)

Got to shake his hand and have my NHb programme signed at either the July 19th or 20th 1999 show....wanted to tell him so much and all I was able to do was drool and look silly.
I know for a fact that that would be different now...

last time i met mk was in 2003. it was before the beginning of the great north run in his home town of newcastle.

Met him in 96, 97 (twice), 07 and 08, got signatures each time.
Thanks again to Waterline Man for getting me into the M&G in 08, one of how greatest moments of my life. :)

Have I/we met MK? Yes, several times but "met" is an overstatement - just asking for an autograph and saying "thanks" does not really constitute a "meeting" in my book. He did once sign the rear of a CD insert for one of the INFIDELS bootlegs which kinda pleased me.
Where did these "meetings" take place? I can't really recall. Outside Glasgow's Clyde Auditorium in the miserable dark and wet comes to mind. Also, after one of the Shepherds Bush Empire shows. Maybe after one or two of the NHB charity shows - Lockerbie and Sheffield come to mind. I probably wouldn't have done any of this but for mrs twm wanting to do it.
-
I think it would be nice to meet Mrs. twm here at amit, too.... :wave

mrs twm doesn't "do" this sort of thing. She knows I do but probably not how much, though I pass on the really important information to her - like the GUITAR STORIES programme that's about to begin - and some of the links.
-
mrs twm is the nicest of lady fans :-)
i HAVE met both mr. and mrs TWM and it was a joy.

pottel may be an unreliable witness, in this instance.

I may be more reliable though. ;)

Are we discussing degrees of reliability now? [This could become embarrassing.]
I'm the least reliable witness in this context but here goes.
Mrs twm is, without doubt, the nicest of lady MK fans - now or ever - and she has filled my life with absolute joy. Could I say anything different? [Do you think I'm stupid?]

All I intended was to suggest that I may have met you and your good lady a few times before, without actually saying so thereby removing some privacy we have by using our nicknames. :-X Apology for any misunderstanding.

I met him only one time, casually in Verona (Italy) during the "All The Roadrunning Tour". I was in front of an hotel, I was there waiting for some friends when I saw him outside the hotel, I did not recognize him but I saw a lot of people following him in order to take photos next to him and/or asking autographs, the same old stupid things, you know. Mark said that he wanted to be left alone (he was busy, going to the gym I guess), anyway almost everyone kept on following and pressing him. Except me, in fact I only watched him, smiling, very happy to see him in person for the first time. Since the "typical fans" did not stop doing the same old stupid things, Mark suddenly used the big black pencil for the autographs like a "weapon" and began making random drawings on people's shirts and clothes!!! I was there watching the whole situation, at the end of the scene I put my hand on his shoulder, then, instead of brutally signing my shirt like he did on others, he ONLY said "leave me alon" and drawed a "little point" on my white shirt. Ah ah ah ah !!!

No offence was taken in the first place, dmg, so no need to apologise.
I can recall sittingin a Dublin hotel once, just off the lobby and sipping coffee, when who should come in the rear entrance but MK with a friend - both in their tennis togs. And, no, I didn't swoop with pen and paper (or whatever) in hand to confront said rock star. Just sat quietly and observed the scene.

To do such a thing its a great pleasure... I love when I see someone famous, and I see many because of my job, and just stay looking at them quietly... Its far better than go and bother them.

Judi Dench goes to one of my local pubs. Seen her there loads of times, but never bothered her as she is having private time. It was her late husbands drinking hole.

I should say something like "I envy you" or "funny situations" but I am really happy for you all and yes, AFknopfler's story is somehow the gem here, so far. Meeting famous people is very awkward sometimes, and I have been trying to come up with a fitting opening phrase or line, to captivate their interest. (or at least to avoid pen fights ;D ) Like going to MK and telling him, something completely out of context with his music and occupation, like the Python's sketch "Do you want to come back to my place". This will surely attract his attention and then you could actually set his mind at ease with a simpler request of an autograph or a photo. (or both) Of course it only depends on the mood of the man, maybe we should think about catch-phrases. (The ones used to hit on women should be obviously avoided)

Met him outside Benaroya Hall in Seattle in 2001 Sailing to Philadelphia Tour.
He signed about 5 fans programs including mine and my friend.
Was able to chat with him for a few minutes.
Seemed very down to earth and like a normal guy.
I was a bit star struck, but he put me at ease.

I met him in 2008. I was with my husband and we were having a pre-show walk down Pilgrim Street in Newcastle and he stopped his black Mercedes alongside of us to say hello! It was a never to be forgotten moment! ;)
