Cool, I expect a detailed review (at least) from our very own Mr. Fletch! Haven't no details so far, I mean the really important stuff, what shirt, jokes, which guitar and stuff.... and if he played Seattle in Seattle...

Plenty about golf. Last tours we learned about tea's, now we're learning about tee's! Zzz... ::)

I find Guy Fletcher's diaries rather boring, this time, too! However, I was referring to our AMIT member Fletch, who will obviously attend the show tonight!! ;D

Fantastic version, making me so excited for the next tour now. Oh, and Yon Two Crows was rather good too! ;)

Epic! Yon Two Crows and Hill Farmers Blues together in 1 set would make me a happy person :-)

Farmers, Yon two Crows, Speedway, Where do you think you are going (my fav Dire Straits) and Encore Tunnel of love.

No, there is no Knopfler 2012 show there... >:(

Yon Two Crows is really amazing !
They should replace So Far Away with Speedway and it would be perfect !
-
Yes!
But...why on hell does he play it this way live and records a a version that is a lot more tame.
Sorry, I don't get it. The same happened with HFB, which is an absolute killer played live.

Well, nobody got the joke... There is a new Knopfler recording in dimeadozen...
But a David Knopfler recording ;D

Mk lets go on a great outro!!!!
It's quite genius how MK changed the song. His singing starts at the major 3rd instead of the root. Together with the amazing drumming of Ian, it sounds like TOL from 1991 ("girl it looks so pretty to me..." / "I can still work for two men and drink for three").
-
Yup, it looks lire the resurrection of DS :) fantastic !
God if we could have this in proper sound... a DVD with WII+HFB+MT+YTC+RT+Border+Piper would be wonderful...
Hope TR and SAN are there next year though, would feel bad without them, and now that MK seems to be on fire... would love to feel that we are back to 2005... :)
-
Yon Two Crows sounds like Dires Straits more than ever indeed, full of energy, and yes, the drums, ... this one delivers all the goods of good rockmusic.
(but i do like the album version too, ...)
Yes, there were tears in my eyes when I heard him let go there -Classic Straits guitar solo. WHY didn't he put a bit on the album?? ! :smack
-
I'll bet that's one of those solos that sounds a whole lot better when you're actually there. Am now desperately in need of a recording from this tour. Will kill for one! ;)

Not me, I dont want to hear So far again, never ever...
-
YTC is just about my least favourite on the album, but it's a great live track, hope it survives next year.
-
I think this is the perfect time for MK to wipe the dust off "Devil Baby".. :) underrated tune that is..

Hey y'all, had a fantastic time last night. Sorry I couldn't update u 'live' but I had to wait until free wifi.
I'm sure I don't have any facts to tell that you wouldn't already know, only my own feelings and impression of the show - and I admit upfront im a first timer, although I've heard some great boots of the European tour.
Quickly - Mark was impressive and the guitar and voice were in fine form, it was very nice to hear 4 songs from Privateering. Where I was sitting the sound was nice, loved the picking sound on acoustic, the Gibsons, Strats all sounded awesome ! :)
I MAY have heard a bum note in the outro to HFB, but of I did, mark didn't let it bother him.
The (full arena I think) crowd loved Mark, great appreciation, two standing ovations (which is two more than Bob got!)
Bob was Bob. His Tempest voice doesn't translate well live, it's more of a bark! Lots of Americans headed for the exit after each song and lots didn't wait for the encore. I looked after Highwy 61, there were tens of people leaving at each stairwell, and that was a song even the lamest fan would know.
I enjoyed a few songs, Things Have changed, Tangled, Thin man and thunder on the mountain were nice. Poor Bobs piano playing I found to be amatureish, his band however are great, and the sound PA was fine.
All in all Im glad for the whole experience, it's a once only thing for me, even though I have Sacramento tickets, I'll probably miss it.
As I walked First Ave home alone, here's some snippets of what I heard,
"the only thing that kept me going was hoping Knopfler would come out.." referring to MK playing with bob, which didn't happen.
"god damn that was the worst thing I've ever seen.."
Lol!

OMG, is this YTC that I'll expect to hear on Wednesday. Beyond fantastic for me. It doesn't sound anything like in the album. Wow !!! :clap
-
Mark blew everyone out of the water in Seattle :)
Guy was smiling away. Very good rapport with the band :)
Amazing night :)
Might comment more later.
-
I've seen two fantastic shows (Vancouver and Seattle). The band is better than I've ever seen before. They're all having a great time and they totally blow away Bob Dylan (I left early twice). Unfortunately there has been a strict no-camera policy which is strongly enforced by security, so I haven't been able to take any pictures. It's a real treat to listen to so many songs from the new album, live they sound even better than on the album. Yon Two Crows is one of the best live songs I've ever heard (with the Seattle version way better than the Vancouver one because of Mark's powerful solo), this song definitely has the proper ending that is missing on the album. Privateering, Corned Beef City, Haul Away, I Used To Could, Miss You Blues and Redbud Tree are all amazing live songs. The arrangement of Daddy's Gone To Knoxville is hilarious (starring Ian on the washboard) with some mind-blowing pedal steel guitar by Richard. And they've taken Marbletown to an even higher level, which is very well received with a standing ovation each night. I'm so looking forward to the next eight shows (until Los Angeles) that I'm going to attend!
-
As much as I'm looking forward to hearing that live version of YTC, I don't think he should have recorded it this way for the album. It's probably the version they recorded earlier on, before Mark decided to go back and change it radically, as I remember Guy reporting. Well, I think the album version they went with is perfect for the album, and the live version will be perfect for concerts. Listening to an album is a much more intimate thing than listening to a band live, in a crowd. I guess Mark tries to do this justice.
And re: Bob and people being horrified: Sorry, but I think they're idiots. Not necessarily because they don't like his sound (that's perfectly fine, to each his own), but because they are stupid enough to expect what they know from their Freewheelin' and Blood on the Tracks records. I mean, come one, before you spend such an amount of money on a concert, go to YouTube and have an earful. To go and then say "ah, how can he destroy his songs in such a way, and his voice, his voice, how horrible is that!" - we'll, that's just stupid. I don't want to defend Bob, and he does have something to answer for, but everybody who wants to know knows exactly how he sounds these days.
-
Hey, Fletch,
(and Jeroen and shootingstars, too)
thanks for review! These were the first "first hand" reviews we heard apart from some journalistic crap... and I for my part would love to hear more!
About every little detail - in fact we don't know THAT much already.... :wave
Great to hear that you all seemed to have a great time!
LE
-
Hi LE, I assumed you'd all have listened to tapers by now? I haven't had chance to catch the multiple threads since I've been away.
Glad jaroen and shootingstar enjoyed as much as I did. :)
It was my first time seeing Mark - and as I am well acquainted with the Euro bob tour boots, there was no 'surprise ' factor except for the new album songs. When he sang YTC, that's when I got excited!
The sound was great (I was at the side/front) and Mark was in fine voice. I had a little sing along to the "..make a living in sheep.." probably much to the amusement of the folk around me!
Guitar wise, I felt MK let go occasionally, and as I said maybe enough to make a mistake (?) in HFB. I thought I heard a dud note in he middle of a run - which is unusual because normally a dud note would be more likely at the start of a phrase, or the end. Once fingers know where they are on the fretboard it's less likely to mess up, but mark was wailing and I appreciate that! :)
The guitars sounded great, the band is superb (even Guy), I now know why u lot go see multiple shows whenever u can!!
The Daddy Knoxeville thing was funny, even with a washboard solo! Got a big clap from the arena.
What amazed me was the whole crowd loved mark, I expected some heckling, after hearing the negative comments on ER from the last tour (up till today I've isolated myself from AMIT/ER so i could enjoy an unbiased concert).
When mark picked up a Gibson a fiddled before a song (sonny?hfb?) I heard someone shout out " I want my MTV" everyone laughed!
Lots of love for Mark where I was sitting and it seemed like quite a few people had come mainly because of him. I say that because once someone heard my accent and got my story .."..I'm hear to see Mark but Bob is a bonus.." I got a thumbs up from the American I was talking too! Plus all the little bits of chatter I heard, even a discussion at one point about the 'guts' to not play hits. Etc.
I heard NO disrespectful comments about MK - and then I was amazed at the negativity when bob started. Almost instantly there was a vibe of 'shock' in the crowd by the end of the first song. As someone has said, It's funny people don't know what to expect but having just released tempest to (IMO justified) rave reviews, maybe a lot of people expected that? Bobs live voice is no where near as enunciated as on Tempest. There was a little bit of love when the crowd understood Things have Changed.... Love the band!
Bye for now, hope the rest of the tour is great for fellow AMIT - I have Sacra tickets, but have been sidetracked by a family road trip, so will miss it. Who'd have thought he USA was so big? :)
-
Fletch, Thanks for your personal straightfprward reviews. Like LE mentioned, it's good to have first hand opinions from fellow Amits.
It's too bad that you won't be able to make it to Sacramento. I'll be there.
USA is huge. There is sooooo much to see. The Westcoast has so many beautiful breathtaking coastlines to explore. Hope you get to do some of that. Enjoy your stay.
-
No worries, it's great to share my feelings - my family just don't understand! :)
I should add, there was defo a hardcore bunch on the floor that rocked out to Bob the whole night, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves ! Go the moshpit! lol, I was a little to the left of stage = stunned audience for Bob.
His new album is great, don't let concert reviews suggest Bob has nothing left, he does.
Shame he's turned into a "jazz" pianist... So many discordant notes, and occasionally some ok blues playing.

Thanks for the review, nice to get some response so promptly! :thumbsup Fletch, if you think that there a lot of taped shows out there in the meantime, you probably will be surprised... however, I have not seen or heard anything apart from these clips, SFA, WII and above all YTC...
Jeroen has already seen a lot of shows, so his judgement means a lot me thinks.
Shootingstar, looking forward your review, too!
It has happened now again. I must admit the tour left me cold until yesterday, but since I saw the YTC clip and read these impressions from you fellow amiters, I am about to think of some more shows next year...

Winnipeg bob and mark by the great taper called soomlos are out there!!!
-
Shooting star, I was surprised to like bob's Winnipeg performance (mainly his part, and as usual) far less interesting and coherent then last year's performances, why did you think?

My 2nd show of the tour.
Different set list from Vancouver, got So Far Away in the encore, which was nice.
But no Miss You Blues, or Red Bud Tree.
A bit disappointed he didnt play "Seattle" as it would have been fitting,
but maybe its too slow a song to fit in the set.
-
Seattle vocals are a bit more demanding, and so are the instrumentation and production. They would have to play it in a different key, in order to not make mistakes and well so differently that it would lose its charm.
-
Yes, I agree, in the album form , "Seattle" would be hard to do in concert without some rearrangement.
Maybe it needs a duet with Emmy Lou Harris

Hey Fletch, hope you enjoy your USA visit. Take a lot of photos and keep a diary. It would be fascinating to hear your experiences! And maybe you will be inspired to write a song or two!
-
Yes, you are correct.
I double checked the setlist.
Miss You Blues was played in Seattle, not in Vancouver.
Mixing up my shows.
-
Thanks VG, we've just spent the last 3 days in Yellowstone Nt. Park, what a magnificent place! Roadtrippin our way south soon. I'd love Marks tour schedule, there would be so much to see and do in between shows.

Here's the Seattle Times Review by Charles Cross
who is a big Springsteen fan too, and I've had pleasure of meeting a few times.
He is also wrote a book about Nirvana.

Oh man, I just spent some time reading Guys diaries, my family and I spent most of the day at Pikes Market and it looks like we stayed in a hotel a stones throw away on the Waterfront just next to he ferris wheel.
Guys pic of the fish market is spot on, there are so many tourists who just gawk at his giant fresh catches of the sea, it's an amazing place. Guy doesn't mention an amazing American banjo player who was playing clawhammer and singing trad songs right next to this market. Pikes Market is a cool place.
As for other cultural events on our holiday, we visited some outstanding natural places like Yellowstone, Zion Nat. Pk. and the Grand Canyon, but I was really impressed with our last day in LA which we spent at Venice Beach. Such a cool place with loads of freaks, skaters, bodybuilders and stoners... really a great place to hang out, drink beers and watch people.
-
Fletch,
I'm glad you and your family enjoyed your stay here in the US. There are so many places to visit and see. My personal favorite is along California Coast. Some days, I'll go along Seattle, Washington, and Oregon coastline. CA is like heaven on earth, climate wise. Hope AMIT fellows will come visit some days. You can all be my guests. :)

Wow nice offer, I hope you dont get 100 people camping out in your yard .... :)

And the rest can join me in Greece. I have no yard but the street outside my house is relatively quite. ;D
But of course Sweetsurrender means litlle by little. 2 each time so that we can last all year round! ;D
Really, thank you sweetsurrender.
But don't you think so many people will ruin this heaven? ;)
-
We have visited the States quite a few times and I can't think of a holiday we haven't enjoyed there. I'd love to say we've been all over but it is simply too vast a country for almost anyone to say that. There are huge tracts of the country we've never seen. Nevertheless, geographically speaking, we have travelled there quite widely and, on that basis, would endorse the comments above.
-

I have a huge yard ! sure ! 100 people ! why not !

Sorry I missed you Fletch, if you are still in town let me know.

Ha-ha-ha!!!! Great Rkd! We can ask Dylan, to play! MK as well. And surely Joni and Neil. ;)
-
Seattle's a great city to visit - been there twice. Take silentguy up on his offer. You won't regret it. Subterranean Seattle is unusual, the pile of guitars in the Experience Music Project rises like a fountain, the Space Needle is worth a trip up even if it goes back to the 1962 World's Fair, a floatplane tour over the city coming into land, or rather to "lake", sticks in the memory, free buses in downtown Seattle is a great bonus (even if most of them run below street level), and the just-wonderful Elliott Bay Books is worth a lot of time. Nearby is a basement jazz record shop and a little beyond the Space Needle, in the Queen Anne district, is (was?) a pretty good second-hand record shop. And I haven't mentioned Pike Place Market, Boeing, Microsoft, Starbucks, Frasier, Sleepless in ... or floating bridges for that matter. And it's close to Canada, so you can get two holidays in one.
And did you know, there's a little bit of the USA that juts out south from the border with Canada, that, by land, can only be reached by driving through a bit of Canada. It's cut off from the rest of the states rather like Alaska but much, much smaller, of course.
