A Mark In Time

Hello fans of Mark Knopfler,
I just registered because I'm a bit confused and I hope you can help me.
There is one song on the new "Privateering" CD that seems to be damaged. First I thougt it could be just my CD, but now I own three albums and they all sound the same.
The song I am talking about is "Yon two crows". There is a small strange sound in the song that for me does not seem to belong to the music but is a flaw that should not be there.
The flaw is a short "bleep"-sound at second 3:31, just when Mark sings: "I can still work for two men and drink for three - I raise my flask <<bleep>> To the clearing skies".
Now I am a bit confused. Do all CDs have this "bleep"-sound? Am I the only one who noticed this? Am I wrong and the "bleep" is not a damage but belongs to the song?
So please listen to this part of the song and tell me if you can hear the sound and what is your opinion on this. I reported my impression to help@markknopfler.com few months ago but they didn't answer my mail and so I still don't know whether the song is damaged or not. I hope you can help me.
This topic is important for me because one of the main reasons for me to have all Mark Knopfler CDs the extremely high quality of the recordings I like so much.

Hadn't noticed it before but you're right. That's on my iTunes copy anyway. I'll check my CD now too. :think
edit: it's on my deluxe CD too. Oh, and welcome to AMIT btw! :wave

Some pretty close listening there !
Could be the sound of fingers scraping a guitar string ? Sounds more like a swheesh than a beep to me ! :)

Yes, it's difficult to describe but sweesh is good! It doesn't appear to be a digital error, more a natural sound maybe? :-\

Maybe a slide whistle?

thank you all for your answers.
It feels good that you all hear this sound, because it was quite strange to hear it on every CD and no one else complaining about it. But now we know that it is on every version, even the downloaded ones, so I can't possibly get a proper version of the song - if it IS an error.
For me it sounds exactly like a digital error, especially on my best speaker/amplifier combination. Ok, slide whistle is a good idea, but I think it is too loud for this. But I don't play guitar myself so I don't really know...
@Fletch
oh yes, I'm working on the quality review. At this level I can forshadow that "On every street" will be in the front row. ;)

tried mentioning it to Guy on his forum?

storm in a teacup :)

It looks like it.

Interesting Topic! I vote for the fingers scraping guitar stings ... it is more like a live recording sound than a studio one.

Sound - what sound ??? I recorded Privateering on an old used audio cassette and listen to it in my old car with my old cassette-player ;D
Sound :think

Ok then, time for a subsumtion. A majority of five users assumes the sound having natural causes. A minority of two users, Pensaboy and me, is convinced that this doesn't sound natural, where Pensaboy seems to be experienced in playing and recording the guitar.
User "ustas" seems to be in favor for not starting any more discussion, maybe because it is obviously not an error or the topic is not important enough. Do the other "naturalists" join ustas?
If not, I would like to take the idea of Pottel to ask Guy Fletcher, just to make sure.

Whether the sound is natural or unnatural is of no consequence to me. I enjoyed listening to the song without noticing anything amiss before it was drawn to our attention and I will continue to do so. There are far more important things in life than a miniscule wheesh in a song! ;)

yes absolutely
the song is totally unaffected, I didn't even notice too before drawn to attention
still quite a funny subject
Also, now we have the live versions the studio one is redundant is it not?

Yes! A good song played live is always better than the studio version, especially if it's extended and I hope it will evolve a bit more on the tour! I will still listen to it on the album though. It hasn't quite become redundant - yet! :)

It's string scrape - sliding into a chord change. As clear as day.

I'll go for that. Or a slide whistle! ;)

Its just a string noise, when you move the fingers on the strings specially the heaviest ones, it sounds like that.

Something like this did never happen to Mark Knopfler so far. Neither on the live nor on the studio albums. Maybe now...
By the way, I have many corrupted audio files from the early MP3 days. You would be surprised how many obvious corruptions sound like this string noise.

or someone sending a skype message while recording ;)
:hmm Mark's too old to know how!
PS So am I!!! :-[
