I think it is easier to list my least favorite MK songs than it is to rank my favorite songs by him. I'm just counting the standard album tracks. None of the bonus track or movie soundtracks since I probably haven't heard every one of those.
I'm not saying these are horrible songs, I'm just saying I can't get into them like I do the rest of his songs.
Marbletown
Daddy's gone to knoxville
Junkie Doll
Whoop de doo
All that matters
Before gas and TV
You can't beat the house
What is everyone else's least favorite?
-
"The Fish and the Bird"....yawn.. ;)
-
I can name a bunch of his songs I dislike, specially from the last releases.
Vic and Ray
Prairie wedding
Fare the well Northumberland
Marbletown
Sucker row
Back to Tupelo
Donnegan's gone
The scaffolder's wife
The fizzy and the still
The fish and the bird
Hard shoulder
Haul away
Don't forget your hat
Hot or what
Kingdom of gold
Today is okay
The worst above all? Can't decide...
-
I didn't like the fish and the bird either for a while, but I have since changed my mind.
Kingdom of Gold grew on me also in the same way so far from clyde did. They have a similarity, but I can't put my finger on it.
Fare Thee Well Northumberland and vic and ray almost made my list.
I keep hoping my least favorites grow on me, but it just doesn't seem to be happening :-\
-
Least favorite... Do America -- I have to skip that one each time. Lyrics are not THAT bad, but the melody is boring and senseless to me.
And while at first I didn't love some of the songs nabobo mentioned, such as:
Vic and Ray
Prairie wedding
Marbletown
The scaffolder's wife
The fizzy and the still
...I DO like them now!
-
No Can Do
Do America
Donegan's Gone - Although I did like it played live in 2010.
-
Vic and Ray
Daddy's gone to Knoxville
You don't know you're born
True love will never fade
Hard shoulder
Time in the sun
Hot or what

All That Matters

By chronological order:
- Les Boys: I'm 100% sure that Mark did not have any homophobic intentions, but still, this one gave a bad image (even though I really love the hilarious telling of the story during Boston'80).
- Walk of Life: the song that, more than the BIA album itself, led people into thinking that DS was nothing more than a 80's pop group... a real decadence after the Pink Flyod progressive rock style of the wonderful LOG album ! (Money for Nothing is forgiven, even though it was massively commercialised it is a damn good song, unlike WOL).
- Cannibals: same as above
- Do America: same as above
- Song for Sony Liston: can't understand why Mark treats this as a live classic
- Donegan's gone: same as above
- All that matters: dull, dull, dull... what the hell GF was thinking when I replaced the wonderful "I dug up a diamond" with THIS on the RLRR CD ???
- True Love will never fade: dull, dull, dull...
- You can't beat the house, don't forget your hat... all this kind of stuff...
-
Ticket To Heaven
I'm The Fool
Red Staggerwing
Secondary Waltz
You Can't Beat The House
Don't Forget Your Hat
-
Herlock - Les Boys and WOL are DS songs. My list would have been much longer otherwise! ;D

Well, all DS songs are MK songs ! save for negligeable stuff, such as the Carrousel Waltz, the credits for sting in MFN, and "what's the matter baby" :)

OK, in that case, I'll amend my list: :)
No Can Do
Do America
Donegan's Gone - except for 2010 live version
I'm The Fool
Hand in Hand
Les Boys
Industrial Disease
Walk of Life
One World
My Parties
Ticket to Heaven

Like Mona Dee said it seems to be a matter of taste. I actually don't mind WOL. So far away is a dull song in my opinion. WOL and SFA are the only two songs I hear in the philly area on the radio. Sultans of swing and Lady writer used to be on occasionally, but I haven't caught them in about 10 years. I heard Cleaning my Gun on WXPN back when it came out. My jaw dropped in shock that it was played.
I actually like the bluesy songs on Privateering, it took a few listens for me to get into them, since I'm not a MK fan for his blues, but it grew on me. I revisited You can't beat the house after this, hoping I'd get into it, but it just isn't happening.
I like Do America, My parties, and Ticket to heaven for the humor value they have in making light of the touring life of a rock star, a rich guy entertaining, and religious leaders taking blatant advantage of their followers respectively. I like millionaire blues and don't crash the ambulance for the same reason.
-
Mine are :
- Heavy Fuel : MFN 2, but always the same guitar rif
- Ticket to heaven : is this Dire Straits ???
- No Can Do : boring
- Cannibals : WOL 2
- Nobody's got the gun : boring
- Do America : boring
- Wanderlust : boring
- One more matinee : boring
- The ragpicker's dream : boring
- Stand up guy : same melody as TRD
- Secondary Waltz : boring
And also, those I used to like and can't stand any longer because too much heard
- Walk Of Life
- Money For Nothing
- So Far Away
- Done With Bonaparte
-
Yes, I agree dletm08, SFA seems very dull to me too on the album, but for some reason I like it played at the encores, even though I inwardly groan every time I see it on a set-list. Played live, everyone seems happy and sings along! :)
-
Did I mention Long Highway? I didn't bother as I thought that was taken as read! ;D
I think you can also add Cannibals and Do America to my list too.
-
Did I mention Long Highway? I didn't bother as I thought that was taken as read! ;D
I didn't notice you mention Marblebore either, dmg! ;) Another thing, do you really like ALL DS songs? ;D

Actually, Marbletown on the album isn't bad - it's the overextended to the tedium live versions that bore me to tears. The song's just not worth it imo.
Well, I don't think I dislike any DS song any more than those I've listed but the thread title was MK songs anyway so I presumed post DS. Wouldn't make any difference though.
-
so i added a poll. :-)
-
Thanks for adding the poll! Has anyone done a poll to pick the best songs?
-
The fish and the bird
Kingdom of gold
Before Gas and TV
Long Highway
Red Staggerwing
Secondary Waltz
The Car Was the One
The Fizzy And The Still
The Scaffolder's wife
True love will never fade
Generally, all the celtic slow tempo songs are boring for me.
But the worst is True Love will never fade : I can't understand why did he choose to play it live on the KTGC tour.
On the other hand, I like Les Boys, and Walk Of Life for the rythm guitar part.
-
I think the results on this poll were always going to be pretty predictable - it depends largely on whether you are a DS fan or an MK solo fan. ;)
Why not have another poll to make it much more simple - DS or MK solo? :)
-
i forgot to add that bleeding "our shangri la"
-

Ahhhh! I've completely forgotten Do America! One of the worst, indeed...

A lot of my faves there.
Missing two I can't stand, In the Sky and Don't you get it.

Forgot about them. Can't understand Junkie Doll, Prairie Wedding and Industrial Disease being there. Each to their own I suppose.

seriously, there are people who don't like R&J ??? That's my fav. Wonder if there are people who don't like TOL and SOS too??????
I voted, vic and ray, Do america, Red staggerwing, fish and the bird. :)
-
seriously, there are people who don't like R&J ??? That's my fav.
I can't understand that either. It's probably my favourite song of all time and I would be really sad if it wasn't played anymore! :)
-
I think R&J's great too, although being played with less gusto than ever these days. His "less rough" vocal takes away some of the character too. IMO the best versions were from 2001. Check out Chicago 05.05.01 or Boston 23.04.01, for example - great vocal and fantastic final solo. Now the vocal is weak by comparison.
I think also - back to the original topic - that there is perhaps a little snobbery going on in the voting. WoL is by no means one of MK's best works, but to vote it as one of his worst seems to me to be hinting at snobbery just because it is perceived as being pop fodder. Same could be said for MFN. I'm sure that with a more objective mind these songs would not have many votes, but it's not really for me to say. Just my personal opinion. :)

RAJ is great, but simply overplayed. I am tired of it, not because it is bad, but because the Making Movies album deserves so much better than playing only R&J tour after tour. TOL would be such a greater representative of this magical album... and think of what would a new version of Skateaway live be... oh my god... the '80 Friday's live version is sooooo freaking good ! Can't understand why such a song was only played for one tour only !
As for WOL, may I kindly disagree with you, as it happens sometimes :) Both MFN and WOL were huge overcommercialized pop successes, yet I only voted for WOL, not MFN, because MFN -IS- a great song nonetheless, whereas WOL is not. So I try to stay objective :)

I don't like R&J.
I would rate it as the worst DS song (in fact as poor as "Love over gold", "Why worry", "My parties" and "Fade to black").
Really not my taste, nothing to do. :-[
The other reason why I can't stand R&J is because R&J is overplayed whereas absolute gems like It never rains or Silvertown blues deserve more...

Sure, there is objectivity but I still think it's getting a lot of votes it doesn't deserve! I may be way off on this and I can understand if this is a reason why; people have the right after all. :)
P.S. Like them or not, they were certainly hugely important songs in the history of DS and the BIA album and tour wouldn't have enjoyed the same success without them.

I like the other three but agree with you regarding Why Worry. How ironic when MK calls it Why Bother! ::)

I forgot Heavy Fuel. I don't like it at all, I never have and the fact it has some guitar doesn't help endear it to me one bit! Thank goodness he isn't doing songs like that today! The songs he plays now are miles better! ;)

I don't know. The ones I like are great and he still has his certain style and songwriting. This is why I miss the guitar playing these days and the gruff vocals; these were his stock in trade and the very things that made me fall in love with his music.

Well, you can't bring back the gruff voice - it was only gruff because he smoked too much! His smooth vocals suit today's songs much better and I love that voice. :P Besides, I can listen to the gruff one any time I like at the flick of a switch! ;)
This string of posts is getting ridiculously long! :o :lol

I get most of the choices. But "all that matters"?
I can speak for myself - if it wasn't obvious enough... :smack - but the fact is that I'm becoming a father in a couple of months and this song it's always on my mind. Well, since it was released I always thought it would be a great song to mumble and whisper to my - then hypothetical - son or daughter.
-
I get most of the choices. But "all that matters"?
Put down you lunches folks! I find this song vomit inducing. Sentimental, lovey-dovey, mushy music for old women. Generalising heavily here but I can't see many teenage heavy metal fans liking it!
-

Lunch! It's not even 10.30am! ;) As for teenage heavy metal fans, I couldn't see them liking anything DS or MK did! It's not one of my favourites by a long way, but there's a lot worse! :) EC did something similar on The Road to Escondido, "Three Little Girls" - now that WAS vomit inducing stuff! :o

It looks like " ALL that matters" and "True Love will never Fade" tie in the poll at the moment. 5.3% :clap Never care for "TLWNF" too slow and boring. :thumbsdown
-
when i heard All that matters the first time live in Brussels 2006, i very much liked it.
yes it is squishy, but still, like it :-)

There are so many really boring song I couldn't vote to All that matters.
Imagine the nightmare to chose only 10 if Monteleone, After the beanstalk, Radio City serenade, Your latest trick, The last laugh, Baloney again, all the EH stuff exwere listed in the poll. :P

As I read the posts on this topic, I realized that I must have incredibly poor taste in music as many of my favorite MK songs are among those that seem to be among the least liked (i.e. The Fish and the Bird, All That Matters). ??? Oh well, I am too old to change my ways now! :D

No, you don't have poor taste, Rkd, just different taste! I seem to be a bit out-of-step too - I actually love "True Love Will Never Fade" at present chasing "All That Matters" to the top spot ! ;D I love "The Fish and the Bird" too! ;)

I think All that matters has more resonance when you have kids yourself.

True! ;) I remember hearing it played at City Hall, Newcastle in 2005 and I loved it. It's not one of my favourites, because I like so many others more, but I don't dislike it, either. :)
-
I remember singing All that matters to my oldest son on the day he was born, and it's still true, him and his brother are all that matters. :)
Love and happiness has a similar message.
-
Hey Nababo, being a father is one of the best experiences in life. Best wishes for a safe delivery! It's all that matters.
As for songs, I only chose "One world". I have many skippers now, but when I was buying the DS albums little by little with my lunch money, I always listened to them from beginning to end, without skipping. So I can't quite put my finger on the ones that just wore off, from heavy playing and over listening(Except WOL, Heavy Fuel, the Bug and Calling Elvis, which were skippers after only a couple of years, so probably dislike them) . That is why I couldn't vote for any solo songs. I have doubts if I have heard them enough to let them sink in. But truth be told from all songs, I could never stand One world, right from the start.

Thanks, Greek man! She's expected to be here at the end of May, beggining of June. I'll let you know.

well I like One world. I know many people find it the worse song by MK (Dusty ?), but I must admit I like it.
Maybe lyrics are weak, but no matter for me, I like the funky-bluesy mood, with that dirty tone, a stratish drived tone, not that overused les paul tone.
BTW Mark played Jack Sonni'strat on it :

And... I like Walk of life too...
-
always liked one world, never understood the general aversion
-
When it comes to taste it is strictly personal. There's so many worlds, so many different suns but we have got one world, but we prefer to go to Mars.
-
I am used to hate WOL but it is more the way it is played than the song itself.
The Mandela Concert version with Eric's blazing soli sound just awesome.

For sure it is Tony Levin playing on it, not "then broken thumb"John!
Listen to the live version and see the difference...

One world is in fact a blues or Rhythm and blues/soul song. Both lyrics and its stracture. I don't much care about lyrics on BiA album anyway, they are by far the weakest in DS discography(I quite like the lyrics of YLT). So I would really like to see it transformed in its original form, and not with this instrumentation and production. I know it is only personal taste,I don't try to convince anyone, but when I try to be more objective about the quality of some songs of my favourite artists, I always ask myself this question: Would I even notice or listen this song if it was recorded from an unknown artist? I know that all in all the question is very subjective, but it is the best thing I can come up,

The live versions were great ;D It sounds a bit empty on the record with only one guitar and not much of rhytm except for that funky bass. The live versions were very powerful.

The lead licks on the album One World is great for sure. Would have like a separate rhytm guitar though.

sorry disagree. I find live version too much filled. Too much "big sound", and the steinberger....beeerk !
the studio version is perfect for me, doesn't sound "empty" at all.
I prefer this songs WITHOUT a rhythm guitar : ride across the river, one world, brothers in arms, money for nothing.
I think that if Mark recorded them without rhyhtm guitar parts, it's because he wanted them sound this way.
Its has a rhythm guitar live, only because the 2nd guitarist couldn't stay without playing.
Jack's guitar is almost a bit too much on BIA tour, and sometimes "out of place".
e.g. the reggae rhyhtm on RATR doesn't fit to the song....but his wah licks at the end (hammermsith dec. 85) are much better good taste IMHO.
-
MFN live 2005 featured a cow bell instead a rythm guitar. But who ever actually heard it?
In 14 shows attended I never got it to my ears, only "saw" it played

Couldn't agree more dmg..I've always considered "The Bug" to be..well.. 'the bug' in the ointment. Always enjoy listening to "When it comes to you" and "Fade to black"..but I truly love "Planet of New Orleans" (the live cuts from the OES tour are amazing!), "On Every Street" and "Iron Hand". On the flipside.."My Parties" has always been a skipper for me..and I can't stand the televangelist knock.."Ticket to Heaven"..too boring.
-
I always skip Calling Elvis, HF, The bug. I believe that the album would have been better without them, although at the time of release they seemed good fun. Anyway it was probably the result of the long anticipation and the joy of having them back1! The rest (TTH, MP )are a nice variety, and although not my favourite ones I like them. PONO is probably my absolute favourite from OES and one of DS best songs. Maybe MK should try and play this at his new tour.
Come to think of it, OES has songs that look at the solo direction and that is why some people might not like it.

Well, whether Mark 'wanted' them to sound a certain way is of no relevance for if I or anyone else likes the result. The thing about the live version is not so much that there is a second rhytm guitar, but that Mark emphasizes the rhytm playing during all parts except the solos, which gives the song more drive and force.
It seems that we disagree about this in a general sense, however, because I do prefer songs like BIA with a second guitar and I have often lamented that Mark played less rhytm on that album.

Never thought about that, but it's true. In terms of rythm, Ticket to Heaven is, for me, twin sister of Devil Bay. How long could perfectly fit in Golden Heart or Ragpicker's dream. On Every Street would be perfect to Kill to Get Crimson. Despite the issue of the lyrics, Iron Hand could merge into Get Lucky...

I use to think that BIA is the last DS album, and OES the first MK album...
but I also tend to think that if Mark had recorded solos albums from the beginning, or on the other hand if he had continued to use the name "dire straits", his music waould have been the same as we know.

we agree and disagree :)
I LOVE Mark's rhythm playing, and I think it features most of his fine guitar work : single handed sailor, skateway, southbound again, once upon a time in the west, when it come to you, on way gal, man of peace, cleaning windows, Do Right to Me Baby, etc... and I would love to hear again more ryhtm parts in THIS style (not the KTGC style...)
but, I find his rhythm playing on one world live too sharp, less subtle as he used to do, and too much "drive and force"
I don't like very much when Mark try to sound "rock", "heavy", on guitar (85-93 era)
I think his style suits more to subtle picking, etheral soli, ambient sounds, clean/crunchy tone, etc...
his tone and playing on One wordl is....well ; I don't find it's Mark
and I prefer BIA with only his guitar (Richard's 12-strings part sounds fine, though)
-
Cool, JF, Richard's acoustic part for BIA was in fact what I had in mind. And yes, Mark's more low-key rhytm is excellent as well.

What a coincidence that I've just been listening to the OES album on my hi-fi and thinking just what a great album this is! The only song I skipped was The Bug! :lol
Lol - different strokes for different folks! I felt OES was all a bit too over-produced and slick, and the songwriting was weak compared to the albums before. I always think of Sailing to Philadelphia as the unofficial "last DS album" - still has the DS feel, but much better songs than OES (IMHO).
Still, I know a lot of people loved the last album, so it's just my personal preference.
-
Necroposting again.
I've voted for <True Love Will Never Fade> for lack of anything better, but in fact I would have dreamt of seeing <Wherever I Go> in that list.

Done with Bonaparte is in my opinion one of Knoplfler's best solo songs. The music is good but the lyrics are amazing. The live version in Cordoba 2010 is especially beautiful.
To me The Fish And The Bird has good lyrics in it and the music isn't too bad. Knopfler's singing is what ruins it :)
My least favorite solo song is Coyote and least favorite DS song is Communique. I love the album though.

Yes, it's a lovely song, full of quiet gratitude, sincere love and tenderness. There is no trace of pretentiousness in it.
Such an apparent simplicity requires hard work to achieve it.
-
can't beat the house / don't forget your hat / hot or what / got to have something / after the beanstalk
-
I don't particularly dislike any of Knopfler's songs, from his solo career. I'm not a fan of his Walk of Life style songs like Do America, and some of his songs can be a bit dull but thats all :)
But for every bad song he writes he, writes another 10 great ones ;D
-

All good shouts there.

Reconsidering my first choices I'll now go with:
Don't You Get It
Donegan's Gone
Hot Or What
After the Beanstalk
Heart Full Of Holes
Time Will Heal All Sorrow
.38 Special
Badges, Posters, Stickers and T-Shirts

what? don't you get it?
no no nooooooo....also, all those others....nooooo

Kill to get Crimson contains most songs that I consider the least well ones.
All in kind of the same too laid back style for my taste.
-
This was nearly 9 years ago and 2-3 album less. Maybe a new election will reveal new winners...
By the way, the only constant worst song is One world. But somehow, when I listened to it the other day, it didn't seem that bad.
Maybe even such a song, compared to some of the recent "pop" output, sounds great.
Or maybe after a certain age, memory tends to favour the older memories, that because they were created when we were young, are more vivid.
I used to think the same about Kill to get Crimson, but I found out that its laid back qualities take longer to establish themselves, but once they do they reveal their fine quality.

Only Just discovered this thread.
Voted for Vic and Ray. It’s boring as anything. Although I believe it’s one of Guy’s favourites.

Great guitar work in Vic and Ray, and even better live.

Yes, and the mood is unique in this song, probably thanks to some kind of mode used which I'm too lazy to check right now. Phrygian-Locrian-Mixolydian-Knopfleryan.
For me, it's impossible to choose as I genuinely love nearly every song, but I'd probably go with TITS (Time In The Sun). I think the "Time In The Sun" catchphrase overstays its welcome, repeating a whopping 15 times in less than 3 minutes. The jazzy intro is kind of out of place; I thought it was going to be a jazzy song, but no — a very short pop tune. And this choir... Seems to be a little excessive for a song like this.
But after all, it was a bonus track, which is now relatively forgotten. Worth it for the acronym alone... :lol

I didn't like Les Boys for many years until I understood it and I could appreciate it.
This song was MK becoming Chet Atkins unconsciously (I can imagine them playing it with an acoustic approach in Neck&Neck... Plenty of opportunities for arrangements and improvisations), it's a funny story and it even serves as a twist at the end of the album, a surprise. It's the mint sweet after a long dinner.

Most of my least favourite songs have grown on me by the time, so there is non for me.
Even my least favorite album “Kill To Get Crimson” has grown on me and now is one of my favorite albums.
That's the phenomenal thing about Mark's music, sometimes it takes a little longer to recognize a hidden gem.

I have too many least favorite MK songs to mention. I'm getting more and more disenchanted with Mark's solo work, especially post-Shangri La. All his solo albums have gems, though, but none of his work gives me as much pleasure as the DS and Communique albums.

Hey Pottel, you imply that you've only heard it once and gave up on it? Maybe not the right moment to hear it, like me, because it came out when my first daughter was born and simply couldn't devote the time needed, so I gave up on it too early. Later on, after years, I just kept playing it over and over again and it was a revelation. Still not his best album, but was an initiation that made his output after it more accessible.

As I have said before, I never skip any of Mark's songs, there is always merit in each one. I am disappointed to see True Love Will Never Fade so disliked, it is one of my favourite songs from Mark, particularly his love songs, and when played live, his solo's and guitar sound is beautiful.

I always thought that the nice little Cittern part (from the intro on) that John McCusker added live in 2008 put the song on a new level, with Mark trying hard to be a real singer. :)

I'll tell you more. True Love is one of the go-to songs people who are contacting me want to learn. Despite being a simple strummer with simple chords, the song somehow has the power to get people mesmerised by the beauty and wondering how you can even play something like this. And that's not even talking about the solo guitar part! True Love is a very good song.

Yes Val, that's the one I was thinking about. It is amazing that he plays the song and solo with a Plectrum too for a change to give it that Hank Marvin feel, but, It's still unmistakably Mark.

It’s weird, none of the KTGC songs are particular favourites of mine but the album as a whole is great. I just love the “twang” that runs through many of the songs.
For me, I don’t understand how Fare Thee Well Northumberland is on this list. Not classic MK perhaps but I love the build, just simple keyboard/synths to building with Richard on the bouzouki, then some great guitar from Mark, Harmonica and some blues piano. Lovely stuff.
-
so i listened. here is my feedback:
true love will never fade: good song, but a waste of time when live due to lack of decent guitar
Scaffolder: guitar at end makes up for not so great song
The fizzy and the still: do not like this style of mark singing "it's not for me" to paraphrase the good man
Heart full of holes:sounds very ragpickers dream to me, may be the reason why i always loved this one
We can get Wild: liked it. great guitar, great singing. funky lyrics. also, GREAT organ (b3 hammond?) one of my favourites from the album
Secondary Waltz: somehow like it. must be the waltz...(also like the visuals that one gets from the text)
Punish the monkey: one of the few i liked from day 1
Let it all go: decent
Behind with the rent: great song, classic mk
the fish and the bird: boring,..BUT, far better still on record than live.
Madame Geneva's:: epic start imho..(with the organ and all) for me the organ makes the song (which is great by itself too though)
In the Sky: love the acoustic intro. true, this is one i have missed all those years

Just one point. You say that you like Secondary Waltz because of the visuals from the text, which is fine, but Scaffolder's Wife to me has
just the same visuals as SW. In fact I can actually see the lady teetering down the street on her stiletto heels! :)

I think KTGC actually has a number of good songs, but I just don't think Mark has the right voice for many of them. A lot of his songs only he can sing, especially classic DS songs, but there are songs where he just doesn't have the register, "punch" or emotional impact to do them justice. He may sing better now compared with earlier times, but he still isn't a singer.

I think his singing style and voice are just as unique as his guitar playing and songwriting.
You could say that he has created his own work of art and for me that is just perfect.

Very good! Everyone is just expressing their opinion :)

yup. also the reason why i, oh blasphemy, am not fond of Our Shangri-la...

I was watching Bosch last night (great show) and there was a very emotional season finale... who starts singing? MK, doing What a Wonderful World. His singing was great on that track.

You mean from that Chris Botti album? I have to respectfully disagree. Mark flat out ruined it ;D

- 50% of RPD
- Sonny Liston
- 50% KTGC
- So Far From de Clyde
- Remembrance Day
- Submariner

- 95% DTRW
- 40% ODR + The Boy

I’m probably opening a can of worms here but I really don’t see how anyone can think R&J is MK’s worst song. It’s not my favourite…but really?!? His absolute worst song!?

Probably just people being too bored with this song, as it even outplayed Sultans in Mark's live setlist and managed to survive through all tours since the Making Movies album.
I can understand the frustration, but on the other hand, it's a quintessential MK song. It's got everything... Petty theft from Springsteen (everybody does that, including Springsteen himself), guitar solos, saxophone solos, a great intro and ending, witty lyrics, a shitty music video, and an absolutely legendary rhythm guitar part. It's not as sad and preachy as Brothers In Arms, not as long as Telegraph Road, not as repetitive as Sultans, not as cheesy as Your Latest Trick, not overly happy as Walk Of Life, not as overdriven as Money For Nothing, so that's probably why it remained in the set for all these years.

I wonder if these petty theft in music are conscious or just happen?
I agree but can't agree that Your Latest Trick is cheesy :)

I get all that. Surely then it’s not his worst song, it’s his Most overplayed song.

Sometimes a song just rubs you up the wrong way and you decide you hate it. And sometimes you go back years later and decide you actually like it. :)

I can't count even with two pairs of hands the amount of people I met in my life who hated The Beatles just because they were popular... I lowkey hate Sultans because of how stupidly famous and ubiquitous it is despite being just another Knopfler song with rather standard flamenco progression, and why everybody keeps playing it on frying pans, kettles and chopsticks when Mark has got 250 other great songs to play.
With that said, if something is considered a classic, that's most certainly for certain reasons and if you don't like it, the problem is with you.

I, for one, don't believe in the ability of any human being to produce 100% original anything... We're just ChatGPTs with 10,000 years of growth and millions of years of evolution behind us. I think it's cool to steal from somebody if it's used correctly, if it's used incorrectly then again welcome to the court or jail. I love homages and references.
About Your Latest Trick, it's not like the song is cheesy as saxophone in general is cheesy. A little bit ;D

People who say they hate The Beatles are mostly just attention seekers. There is a further weird subset of people who hate them for political reasons. Yes, really.

It would be really curious to edit a CD or a Spotify list with the selection of the “worst” tracks of DS and Mark. Just listening to them all in a row would be an experience of merit. Although I also tell you that it would probably be better than most albums that come out nowadays.

Do America, maybe.
But I don't hate it. Mark seems uncapable of writing songs I hate. The ones I have reservations about have typically been affected by production; it's not the song or the playing/singing I dislike.
