We watched the opening ceremonies of the Olympics last night. Awesome, beautiful, unforgettable, magnificent, unprecedented, unmatched, incomparable, gorgeous, breath-taking. Congratulations to China! Allen, you should be proud! No smilies good enough here to represent my awe and respect!
-
it was AWESOME indeed.
-
I see I have missed something! ..........I didn't have time to watch, except the last part when that man was running in the sky and lit the fire and that was amazing to watch!

just read that only 29 of the 100 "footsteps" (in the fireworks) were actually done live, most others were digitally added.
also the footage from the helicopter was prerecorded, as there was a general no-flying policy above peking that night.
still, loved it.

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but it would have been much more impressive if China improved their human rights record and respected Tibet!
-
did not yet want to move in that area so soon, but you are OBVIOUSLY absolutely right.
-
I agree that China (and many other countries) needs to work on its human rights program--and the USA needs to get out of other countries' business--Iraq, for example. Many people feel the need to make statements..but not at the Olympics.
The Olympics are not about nationalism or politics or governments. They are about people--at their best: with achievement, friendship, and harmony. The ceremonies stressed so beautifully that this was an event about unity and friendship. I, for one, wish that politics and governments would stay out of the Olympics. This magnificent tradition has nothing to do with international conflicts and policies. More than one event has been ruined because of nationalism, prejudice, hatred, and politics. Interesting how those words appear in the same sentence. No country is perfect. And no country is evil--discounting the bad-ass leaders. I'm not speaking of China here, Pottel. :) Countries are land, rivers, mountains, towns, cities, and above all, people, most of whom want to live decent lives and mean to harm to anyone else, irrespective of governments.
People respecting people and people putting their best in. That's what the Olympics are about.
-
then again the whole opening event was only possible (and beautiful as it was) due to the totalitarian govmt.
anyways, if we want Allen to be able to use this forum without gov. hassle, maybe we need to be cautious with this topic.
-
Hi my dear friends,
I'm still in Hohhot, back in my hometown for additional holiday. Glad many of you like the opening ceremonies of the 29th Olymplics. Pottel, only 29 footsteps of 100 are real, because this is the 29th Olypmics. :)
I'm not so serious about the politics topics, but for Tibet issues, I only hope some of you could pay a visit there to see what the local people live today. I'm really tired of the old photos and reports from western countries.
I'll be back in Beijing for work and MK communities on about 20th of August, stay tuned!
BTW, have you got my parcel, IrisRose?

shall we just leave politics off the forum then? not sure really, just don't want to get fights started or get people into trouble.
anyone up for a poll?
-
Neither politics nor religion should be discussed at the dinner table. Maybe that should also apply to the forum! ;)

Quote Val: "Neither politics nor religion should be discussed at the dinner table. Maybe that should also apply to the forum!"
I agree with you Val! ;)
I post at a forum of a friend for almost 6 years. We have a politics section there too. People respect each others opinion, but the difference can sometimes be so big, that after many discussions all those years, some friendships were destroyed and that feels terrible!
We are such a wonderful group of friends over the world and politics or religion shouldn't come between! Besides Mark :P (who is the main reason) there are already many nice, interesting and funny subjects we can talk about here too!

Must say I agree fully with your post Fieneke. I would prefer a Forum with no politics or religion at all. I think there are enough other non-MK related outlets for these topics where we are able to express our views and beliefs.
-
i seriously tink we need a general poll on this, not just from the editors.
-
I vote for no political or religious discussions..............
I thought the Opening Ceremony for the Olympics was stunning! It was very beautiful, entertaining and breathtaking.....I love the Olympics and am enjoying every competition I've been able to record, watch live and replay!
How about that stunning 400m swimming relay!!!!!!!! Team USA was outstanding! What a finish!!!!! Michael Phelps has been living and training in Ann Arbor, Michigan (not far from me), at the University of Michigan. My husband's business partner's daughter (got that?) was a diver with the UM swim team and knew Michael Phelps. Apparently, he's a very nice guy, not to mention-an amazing swimmer. GO MICHAEL!!!!!!!! :D
-
Leaving politics and religion off the forum is fine with me. (except for my occasional shot at George Bush ;D. But if you'll look at my original post in this thread, there was nothing in there about politics! I had no idea this topic would become hot. :-[
-
true.
-
So now we are just discussing the events! totally cool. Yes, Gayleybob, we saw that fantastic finish! One hand's length to win. What a sprint at the end. Globally exciting! 8)
-
true, but you are in the non-mk section....
oh forget it.
no more "extreme politics & religion" then?? we just gotta decide on a direction....
-
I think political / religion threads are fine in the "Open Forum" (this one). Just don't be surprised if your thread does not receive widespread interest. ;)
However, there is no point in creating a separate forum just for political commentary.
-

ROFL Marie, that is right, I responded to Pottel's message. ;D
Btw talking about swimming.......did you see the 4 Dutch girls winning gold at the relay race? It has been 112 years ago that ladies won gold at the relay race at the Olympics, so this is a wonderful result for the girls! ;)

I have just been watching the news and it appears that the little girl who sang at the opening ceremony was miming to another little girl's voice. Apparently, the child who actually sang the song was not "flawless" enough to represent the Chinese people! How sad! :(
-
just read that too.
title in my newspaper was: Girl too ugly to sing. :o

Any more negative reviews? I'm so curious that people are more interested in this kind of reviews than the prosperities of the ceremony. And it's lauphable that it's hard to find a cute and lovely CHINESE girl with nice voice to sing the song.
B.T.W., how does the karma work on this forum? I don't like this word at all.

Hi Allen
Welcome back on the 17th.
The parts of the opening ceremony, which I saw were outstanding. One of the things which goes un-noticed in these events are the thousands (46000 at Sydney and most likely many more in Beijing) of local people who volunteer and work behind the scenes to help to make things run smoothly.
The Karma feature here is a way of responding to a post from a member. If you click Exalt their Karma goes up by one and if you click smite their Karma is reduced by one.

any belgian medals yet?? :-\ :-\
-
And what about German?
We have one golden, one silver and I think 3 bronze now!
Fieneke

Germany have 6 Gold, 1 Silver and 3 Bronze
-
yep, ze germans are happy campers at the moment.
but what about phelps people....unbelievable.
-
Phelps must be a machine. He has so much confidence in his own ability as well. Quite impressive for 23 years of age!
-
I agree with Phelps, that man is amazing good! ;D
Thank you for your answer Val and congratulations for the German and GB people as well! We got 2 new medals today! One silver and one bronze...................Ooohhh well for such a small country as we have (only 16 millions people) we are doing good! ;)

Track and field starts tomorrow!!! Then the games really kick off...

I am so impressed with the graciousness of the Chinese audiences at all the events. They are kind to EVERYBODY! I just watched a news report about the gentleman who designed the medallions and symbols for the Olympics this year. (Thank you Allen :) ) Such a fine man, who spoke of worldwide love and concern for our planet. Such a kind face and beautiful smile. Such immense talent. I was very moved by the report.
-
Great news for Team GB - Rebecca Adlington has won her 2nd Gold Medal in the Ladies Swimming! :) Hurray!! :)
-
Phelps is cheating!! :-\
His feet are so big it's like he's wearing flippers! ;D. That is a clear advantage over the others!! ;D
By the way, you know what they say about men with big feet don't you? Big feet= big........................ shoes!

Oooohhh Rollergirl you are right about his feet, that must be the secret of Phelps! ;D
Aaand .......yeah Big feet = big ...............! :o
Oohhhh well it might be his second hidden secret, ........*looking around, can I say? ::)* ..............he might use it as a periscope, to see how far the others are behind! :o ;D

Big feet=big shoes=big?????? WINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And a big appetite! Can you imagine what these (guys) eat, to keep up their energy?
The women, on the other hand (especially in gymnastics), are encouraged to starve, in order to keep their weight down! How can you starve yourself and compete on such an elite level?
Makes me hungry, just thinking about it...............
-
Congratulations to the amazing Michael Phelps winning his 8th Gold Medal! I have just finished watching, but I wish the commentators would realise that the Relay is a TEAM effort and mention the names of the others who helped him to his medal! ;)

Great point, the last American swimmer really had too hold his own. Full credit to Phelps though, his leg put America from a position of contention to the position of being in the lead.
-
Team GB are now third in the Medals Table with 16 Golds, behind China and US! ;D
-
I heard at the start of the games team GB were hoping to finish 8th and then 4th in London 2012. Looks like they've made better progress than they expected! :D
-
Well, it's not all over 'till the fat lady sings, as they say! GB may still end at 8th, but I hope they keep up their present success! :)

Jimmy Page with Leona (WHO!!!!!!) Lewis at the closing ceremony.!!!
I kept dreaming how cool that would have been if it had been Mark on the top of the double decker bus. (Not with Leona) :-\
Come on UK 2012. Mark Knopfler playing a heavy part in the opening ceremony.
You can't get a more British example of greatness.
Cheers BBB

got that on dvd now ;D ;D

My sentiments, exactly, BBB. LEONA WHO?????? She certainly seemed tall.
Shall we start a worldwide petition, to the Mayor of London? MARK KNOPFLER FOR THE OPENING CEREMONIES, LONDON OLYMPICS, 2012!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll sign!
Do you think Mark would succumb to our gallant wishes?
YAY, LONDON!
-
Hehe, some of Chinese MK fans said Jimmy Page is so old now. IN 2012, we really need someone like MK who is still energetic and passionate not only from his shape of mouth but also from his unique fingers of picking!!! Good luck, London!!!

LOL Allen! ;D Thank you for your good wishes for London, I hope we can do as good a job as China did! Mark would be perfect btw! :)
-
Of course that would be great, I'm not so sure that's Mark's sort of thing now. He seems happier out of the limelight as such.
-
I agree, MK would be the perfect choice. . . . I can see where McCartney or EC or Elton might be asked, but MK outshines anyone else. And he would donate any fee to charity. (not that McCartney or EC wouldn't.) Jagger wouldn't. Only MK has grown and stretched his talent over the years.
-
So let's make a poll? ::)

-
Now who do you think would win? Here's a thought. MK and who?
Elton,
McCartney,
that Lewis lady,
what's her name who won the grammy? tattoos, eyemake up to Mars, (don't intend to be disrespectful, just can't remember her name)
Phil Collins,
EC,
NOT Jagger
Steve Phillips
Brendan Croker
Dusty Valentino
help--my brain is fried after two hours of editing some fiction. (not ours)
-

I assume you are talking about Amy Winehouse?
-
Only Dusty could beat MK if trying hard through these 4 years ;D But hey, what about a band formed up with:
Mark Knopfler - Lead Les Paul Gibson and Vocal ( a MFN belt on the head? ;D)
Eric Clapton - Rhythm Fender (with cigarette on the head of his guitar :P )
Elton John - Rock 'n Roll Piano (with his feather hat on 8) )
Alan Clark - Melody Keyboards ( Playing the intro of ToL ;))
Sting - Reggie Bass (Not seen him playing Bass on MFN yet, a pity :-[)
Phil Collins - Heartbreaking Drums ( My former hero :D)
Ray Cooper - Various Percussions (Hope he's not retired yet :-\)

-
We can only dream...and hope. 8)

They wouldn't be so clever enough to choose Mark, they'd go for some pretty, can't sing, can't write, can't play instrument 'artist.' Unfortunately there are too many of these filling our charts and media!!!
