It's insane SFA and CMG instead of SOS.If he don't want to play this masterpiece he should'nt play it all concert like 2006,2011,2012. Unfair for the crowd, especially firs attendeers.

It's really fascinating to see daily how we AMITers know exactly what firsttimers want to see.
As if we were.
As if we cared... ;D

Well,............ we had a long disscussion about that last night.
Very few members at the forum disliked the idea of saying goodbye to SOS at the gigs.

Because most of the AMITers listen live SOS dozen of times, maybe they don't want to listen again but we are minority i think. MFN and WOL ok but SOS is piece of art.

I can easily live without SOS anymore at a MK concert (and actually did in 2006) but it is strange that it is dropped that way.
I enjoyed it it Turin but if for example SB was to replace it I would enjoy the latter a lot more.

But 2006 was a MK/EH mini tour so doesn't really count. We could live with it then because we knew it was coming back and that tour was different with Emmy and different song styles/choices etc.
Until this tour (as far as we know) it has been played at every fully fledged DS/MK full length "standard" concert.

what I would pay for to know is why:1) dad's favorite, still mourning after 20 years ? 2) lack of physical capacity to play it ? 3) he disowned it ?
I don't believe in 3) since he spoke recently cheerfully about TOL.
He sure knows that audiences would go hysterical should he play it...
So why, Marky ??

I think the only reason he played Sultans in Antwerp was because the set was only 16 songs at not the full 17.....

Will he play SOS way on downsouth London town?? ;D
I wonder about the setlist with Ruth and Nigel at the band. I supose that Going Home will be back again.

I'll be surprised if Sultans isn't played in Glasgow, If not, that crowd will let him know their feelings pretty quick.

Sultans mmmm
another 3-4 shows and Telegraph will be out too
replaced by The fish and The bird
Nooooooooooooooooo !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mark is continuing in his solo project, which delimit as much as possible his past, now in a lineup of sixteen songs are only 3 of his old band, the one that made ??him famous all over the world. I will hold as long as the best of his production is that of the first 15 years, I also really like his solo work, but it does not seem totally supplant straits song like sultans of swing :clap :clap :clap , his very masterfull piece in absolute with telegraph road :clap :clap :clap , to play haul away :think or corned beef city :think

Many managers retire around 50 and enjoy their millions sailing or golfing or gardening and forget the companies that made them big and rich.
Mark still plays for us.
He plays what pleases him and what fits his age in whatever way he may consider.
He does not want all the dIRE sTRAITS masses to come back to see him.
I wonder how all the moaners here will perform when they're about to turn 64...
just my (next) 2 cents
PS1: yes, I miss SOS, and no, I don't.
I'm not fed up of any song, but:
I love to see Mark play with plesaure, grinning and dreaming away.
PS2: I'm not going to see the straits, I rather listen to my cds
PS3: nice review, Superval :)
Was lovely to meet you again :thumbsup

Hi MOAT! It was lovely to meet you again too!
I agree, it's easy for these people in their 30's to moan endlessly about setlists, etc, but will they be able to perform 72 concerts with everything it entails - travelling, performing most nights, etc when they are 64? I was just so happy to see a smiling and relaxed MK at Amsterdam, who was obviously having a lot of fun. :)

I like driving. Didn't want to spend the night on the boat and a busy schedule on Tuesday at the office (Ferry to IJmuiden means I am only home late on Tuesday morning) made me decide to drive
Will have a great weekend again ????

I love the music of MK and he can play whatever he wants, solo or DS i really don't mind.
There is a fact that i have never seen DS in live because i was to young to go (35 now)
But name me one artist who stops when he's 50???? or am i missing something here.
Paul Simon is 71 and still touring, Lennard Cohen is still touring and Robert Plant and Crosby Stills Nash and Fleetwood Mac......
I think we still got a few tours to go with MK

I am happy to have been able to listen to one of the best versions of Sultans I have ever heard in Bremen. ;D
It was so powerful, not only Mark, the other three played so well, too, that it was really an outburst of energy. As long as he is able to deliver such a great version WHEN HE FEELS LIKE DOING IT, it will be a nice surprise to have it in the set. It was an absolute regular in every set the last 30 years and maybe he felt it needed to be refreshed in the sense of making it special playing it not too often. I respect his decision totally and love the sets he delivers these days very much.
(But I admit that I wait for my Bremen stick very eagerly to hear that great version again as soon as possible).
I phoned my sister during the show and let her listen to it (as she was not able to attend a show this tour sad enough) and what I got back was a message with just WOW!!!! ;) ) She asked me if I was ON the stage as it sounded so good even through a phone...

So, a short review. (Btw sorry about 'Kingdomce come' in my first post, of course I meant K. of gold, as I said the anticipation was stellar... :) )
So yesterday I got my first autograph from Mark, yay!! As 'the convoy' was getting into the back entrance it stopped and Mark was very nice and signed stuff from the fans. Paul Cockford was like I imagined him, acting a bit like a gorilla. Strange to see Richard B. alone in one Mercedes and Jim Cox getting into the arena on foot (I guess it has something to do with his ear problem?)
Finally met some of the topnotch bigleagues fans, e.g. mister C from RCJS (a very nice guy) and saw mr. Poupystar in the crowd.
Also met these 2 great and very friendly Polish guys. Probably not hot news for you all, but it turns out there is quite a big MK community in Poland, they have their own forum (knopfler.pl) with around 400 regular visitors. They even had their own T-shirts made and from the look of it they are quite organised.
So it is cool for me to know that there is something going on in the former Eastern Europe, because I feel there is just the two of us in Slovakia (me and my friend) and nothing organised in Czech Rep. or Hungary either.
So, here is my opinion on Sultans. He didn't play it and I am glad. The last good version was maybe in 2001 for me, the newer ones I just couldn't enjoy so much. So why play it if it's going to be slow and with not as good solo guitar? (probably majority of the audience wouldn't notice this, but I am a guitarist and I do :) )
Highlights of the show:
Cleaning my gun - man I love this song, I phoned mark beforehand and ordered it for the evening, and they delivered! Love Richard's 12string and John McC.'s telecaster. ENERGY!
Father and Son - a nice addition to the setlist and Mike is was really good
HFB - ENERGY! loved it
I used to could - very cool arrangement, Mark was good and Jim Cox was amazing!
Marbletown - cool as always (right dmg? :) )
Speedway - da killa song, this one is so special, all the parts come into place, the arrangement, the chord progression, the singing, the power chords, and MK's solo is always top notch (unlike Sultans), works every time 110%
Telegraph road - played on Pensa! Loved the sound of it, nicer for me than Strat. This is another one that always works imho, so full of energy again.
BIA - great solo, love it how Ian Thomas plays drums here
So far away - although I was hoping for Going home, this version was the best version I've heard so far in concert. I don't usually enjoy this one as much, but it blew me away yesterday.
Good onew were also:
Gator, Haul, R&j, I Dug up, Postcards was much better than any other version I've heard so far (but it's Postcards so it can't be a highlight for me :) )
All in all a stellar show, a great setlist, the guys were relax, was standing directly under Mark 2nd row, met great people, got MK's signature, what else could I wish for? :)
-
Thank you for the review!
Jim should not have any ear problems anymore, because that was the reason for him returning into the band? And Richard alone in a RR is strange, too.
Maybe the hate each other! ;D ;D ;D (JUST joking...)
(Joke aside, if I read Richard's diary on this tour, he seems to be the top moaner, moaning about everything, even more than dmg, and that does mean something!) :P

Of course MK still tours - those art galleries and recording studios don't run themselves you know! :)
Why should he play what pleases him? Isn't it us - the fans, the ticket purchaser - he's playing for? The set should be one he chooses, yes but it should be one that will be audience friendly. I regard this current one as selfish and arrogant.
Every fan in the venue is paying good money in hard times and maybe travelling long distances too so we should not be leaving the venue feeling like we've been let down by not hearing songs we've been expecting to hear and certainly not leaving thinking like we've accidentally just been to Celtic Connections instead!
-
Thanks for the review, boboDS. I love hearing about those extra tidbits of information such as MK stopping for autographs, Richard travelling alone.....maybe he uses his travel time to write or practice :hmm. From reading his diaries, he seems to enjoy his alone time.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a Celtic Connections gig! Have you ever been to one?
btw, I would much rather Mark was playing the songs he wants to play, because that makes for a very happy and relaxed MK and that is most definitely NOT arrogant or selfish at all! I went away from Amsterdam a very, very happy person!
-
Never been to a CC gig Val, no. No intention to either after the bits I've seen on TV. :)

I'm sorry to say this DMG, and I absolutely don't want to be rude... But do you actually like the music MK produces as a solo artist? All I'm reading is very negative.. And of course, that is your opinion and I respect that but I'm very much wondering if you understand anything about musician who writes and plays songs. If you don't like to play a song anymore, you just don't do that. Because THAT is why you are a musician. You play songs that you LIKE to play.
-

Don't worry Lars, you're not being rude at all. I know exactly your point and it's very valid. I actually am beginning to find a lot of his solo work celtic based and this is okay in short spells, however it really has went into overkill with every song now having more involvement from John and Mike than Mark himself.
I come from an era when I fell in love with the music of DS and the guitar work of MK. This is all in direct contrast and very hard for me to take. The only DS treatment I ever got was when I attended a MK live concert and I got to hear that guitar again - it was reminiscent of the old days. Now I don't get anything but John and Mike are there too and Mark doesn't even stop to think about me. It's people like me, buying his records, attending his concerts in the old DS days who made him. Maybe he should think about us.
It's maybe different for the "new breed" of fan who fell in love later with his music but I'm old school and the music is so, so different. I think he really should be thinking of this when he decides a set for a concert.
I do like some of his new stuff though, I still can't tear myself away!
-
Common dmg, Celtic connections! :) I certainly didn't have that feeling.
In my view Celtic music would contain no drums, electric guitar, or even keyboards, just John McC and Mike and maybe Richard. So I take it you don;t really like father and son or Cal?
I'd say, if it doesn't please you, you might as well quit doing it. Especially someone in MK's position, when he has enough money for several lifetimes. Because if it doesn't please you, you are usually not doing you're best. So I think the setlist should mostly consist of songs that he likes to play and a few of them 'for the fans'.
On the other hand, he could exchange Sultans ('for the fans') for some classics ones like WDYTYG, SBK, whatever ('for the fans'), if he doesn't want to play Sultans every evening.
-
You got what you paid for back then, dmg.
It doesn't include a lifelong subscription.
That's what I said a few hours ago.
He can even use YOUR money to play golf instead of guitar :P
Too late for returns or warranty claims ;D
-
dmg - I have been a DS fan since almost the beginning, so not one of the "new breed", but I have moved on now and enjoy MK's solo work, probably more than the DS stuff! If I can hear Sultans, TR and R&J occasionally played live that would be perfect, but only as a bonus and not taken for granted! I think that's the direction Mark's concerts will take in future and that is fine by me! Just so long as I can still see and hear him play! :) I don't think that is selfish on Mark's part at all!
-
Now I don't get anything but John and Mike are there too and Mark doesn't even stop to think about me.
Seriously? anything but John and Mike?
What was was, you can't live on past. Mark's music has evolved somewhere else and you can't have it both ways. I was like this, always hoping to get back the old days, but it's not gonna happen and I accepted it. I still hear that guitar, although less, but I still do, and that's much better as if he wouldn't be touring anymore and I wouldn't hear it at all.
It's people like me, buying his records, attending his concerts in the old DS days who made him. Maybe he should think about us.
I think that's why, at least from a small part, we had OES tour. But after that, being in the position he was in, he could have said that's it, I'm tired of it, goodbye, no more touring. But I am glad he is still here and I can enjoy amongst others HFB, TR, SAN,...

dmg - I have been a DS fan since almost the beginning, so not one of the "new breed", but I have moved on now and enjoy MK's solo work, probably more than the DS stuff!
Well said, Val :thumbsup
I am not a newbie either. Not at all.
Maybe it DOES take a certain age to appreciate life long changing? ;)

You got what you paid for back then, dmg.
It doesn't include a lifelong subscription.
That's what I said a few hours ago.
He can even use YOUR money to play golf instead of guitar :P
Too late for returns or warranty claims ;D
golf??????
sssstttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt moat
Don't bring Mark to strange ideas, I once told him: "keep playing with your heart and soul geordie boy, thats how I became a fan of you 30 years ago at the first place, don't be an entertainer, no el macho, even when you have to skip
a hit like Sultans for a while".....well you know what happened :think
But I am not willin' to tell him which iron nr. to use on a heart full of holes ;)

I understand and share lot of what DMG said
And I also share "A man on the track", "Val" etc etc thoughts.
Its just a thing that nobody is wrong, everybody is right, and in the balance you will find happiness ;D

Can you do friday Pottel, I am driving from Goirle to Duinkerken, boatcrossing to Dover and then from Dover to Newcastle. So about 1000 km to do, with departure only around 14.00 :hmm Little stupid I know, but then I have the full saturday at Newcastle.
Why not the ferryboat from Ijmuiden (NH) to Newcastle ???? :hmm
you know ,like the song, but visa verse :think
Enjoy your stay and the concert :wave
I like driving. Didn't want to spend the night on the boat and a busy schedule on Tuesday at the office (Ferry to IJmuiden means I am only home late on Tuesday morning) made me decide to drive
Will have a great weekend again ????
I am sure you will have a great weekend, a bit busy maybe.
I guess "The long highway" will be played on your car audio system at least twice? :lol
groetjes

Not only long highway :D
I suppose some concerts will be played and and and
Thanks to Superval I have a nice route to drive from Newcastle to Liverpool.
So that's not the boring highway.

Not an easy decison to take when you have been in love with his music for so many years and that actually you like some of the solo stuff.
I don't really care if he plays DS stuff or not, I don't mind if he drops SOS but I have much more concern for myself about what he will be playing, this just a question if I still enjoy what is he doing. But when comes the time that you actually does not enjoy what the artist is offering anymore, it is up to us to make the move, and say enough, I'm leaving.

He's playing what he wants, not caring about what the majority of the punters want - the people who actually paid the money and have the courtesy to go to see him. I don't like to say it but that is the very definition of selfish. ??? :)

Short review:
01. What It Is: great as always
02. Corned Beef City: perfect
03. Cleaning My Gun: personally: boring, monochromatic song
04. Privateering: now this is truly a masterpiece
05. Father and Son
06. Hill Farmers Blues: better than Antwerp
07. I Dug up a Diamond: better than Antwerp
08. I Used to Could
09. Romeo & Juliet
10. Gator Blood: my brother says it was better than Antwerp, but I didn't notice.
11. Haul Away
12. Postcards from Paraguay
13. Marbletown
14. Speedway at Nazareth: just spectacular
15. Telegraph Road: outro solo was a disaster, never liked the sound of the Pensa on TR, and in this version, virtually no trademark lick that makes TR.
The outro solo just sucked, sorry to say.
16. Brothers in Arms: very nice version
17. So Far Away: "Esch-sur-Alzette-town" is too difficult to work into the lyrics, couldn't figure out what he said instead...
So, first MK tour-gig I saw without Sultans. Conclusion: he should ditch SOS on every show, and TR as well. The set stands on its own magnificently. And as MK says: R&J and BIA still work, after all these years. He was right to ditch SOS. Now, it hurts me to say so but he should ditch TR also.

I agree about TR. I felt the same about the Amsterdam final solo - he seemed to be struggling, but on hearing it again, it was definitely better than I first thought, but nowhere near as good as the 2010 versions. As I said previously, I can see MK's shows developing into solo only setlists, with the odd DS song played occasionally! :)
-
The end solo on TR has come in for much criticism lately but imo the overall arrangement this tour of the song is far better than the last couple, even with the first solo missing.
See, no moaning! ;D

Yes absolutly totally fed up with Ticket To Heaven played to death... but he should bring Bonaparte back more often ;D

If you think a concert ticket is a voting permit for song requests you should attend Brendan Croker's gigs more often :)

Superval: we weren't able to listen carefully to TR because the f....g security violently forced us to get seated again. So we were disturbed in enjoying the song in it's entire

Yes, I know Ingrid and I'm sure it must have disturbed MK too! I found a clip of TR in Amsterdam on YT and it sounded much better than I earlier thought, but I can't find it again - seems to have disappeared! ::)

The earlier versions from the tour had less or no mistakes at all, so it must be a concentration thing. I think the band have just settled into a nice easy rhythm and are all too comfortable now taking it easy. Milan has a great solo for example. :think

Yes, yes, yes!
Luxembourg captured!
Mark captured!

I just deleted a long post & will just say that I will be disappointed if I don't hear Sultans, whatever else is played, and particularly if it left out in favour of other "overplayed" songs. ( for all the reasons previously stated). Having said that, I respect Mark's right to choose his setlist and will enjoy whatever he does play.

Agreed 3Strats..imo SOS should be kept..and cut Marbletown..or..dare I say it..TR (it's just not the same anymore). Cutting either one of the aforementioned songs keeps SOS in the 17 song list..as well as adding an 18th song to the list (more is good..right?). Like I said..it is just my opinion..and Mark has never disappointed me live..soooo..I'm fine with whatever he decides to play.
