Hi Knopfler fans
I read sometimes, that some fans get an autograph from Mark Knopfler and/or the band. It would be nice, if the real fans can have an autograph too.
If you have met Mark sometimes and got an autograph, please tell us how you did it.
Are there some special places to have a better chance to get an autograph? Is there a special way of doing it?
Thank's a lot for every hint!!! :clap

PS: My next chance will be on the 11. July in Locarno

...yes, please share your secrets!!! :wave

Had the great pleasure of meeting him twice. Can't say there's any certain advice to give, you just gotta be in the right place at the right time.
But!
Rule no. 1 (and 2,3,4....)
Always be polite and respect a "no" for an answer :thumbsup
Btw, what's the difference between "some fans" and "the real hard fans"? :think

Hi, I tried once, this year and got it! :)
We waited at the back entrance (where the trucks usually come) of the Rockhal arena in Luxembourg, it was around 3:40pm - 4:40pm, don't remember exactly (the show started at 8pm). There were probably about 10 of us, and one had a A4 sized "banner" saying something like "please come and sign". So when the cars came, they stopped and Mark rolled down the window a patiently signed 10-15 pieces of "memorabilia".
This was the first time for me, but the other people had done this a couple of times before and they knew what they were doing. I am planning to do this once more this tour.

I loved the opportunity when I got my first autograph back in 99
But why get one each time? I would rather use that encounter to try and talk about music that he likes, that is what I would like to know. Does he have his own "mk" and dreams of hearing his own favorite "TOL" ?

If you know the hotel were they are seated, than that's the best way in my opinion.
I did it in Amsterdam this year and it worked.
I saw him in 2001 at my first concert, after the concert, but then he was just waving.
In 2005 he signed some stuff for other fans at the artist entrance.
RAH gigs seem pretty impossible to me, because of different exits and MK seems really good at avoiding then :P
In my opinion, defenitly before the concert.
At the hotel or the gigs entrance

I got lucky three times now since my first MK concert 12 years ago.I think it always depends on the venue. Sometimes it

You know it's not the same. It's not so much the autograph, but meeting the man himself. I wonder whether ladies get a better chance to get autograph???????

I remember in 2001. I saw him in Lyon, and I read Guy's diary every day. when I saw that they travelled by TGV, I thought : woo, if I knew which train it was, I could have bought a TGV tickedt, and Mark would have been "available" only for me during 2 hours ! ;D
Well, bad idea... you know that kind of boring fan which disturb you when you are sleeping in train.... :smack :disbelief

Nope, we were with only 5 in Zwolle. They passed us, waved, but didn't stop. 3 men, 2 ladies. ;-(

The travelled by train in Germany too. Just imagine Mark &Co standing on Stuttgart rail station with bags! :D I was there also, but 2 hours bevor ;D
Imho optimally way get an autograph from Mark and meet him himself is a meet&greet. Becouse he can take time for the fans and the fans don't need to "beg" for stop or hunt for him. An official M&G is a managed situation an it is good for the both sides. But unfortunately it is no more chance for civilized solution like this.
It isn't easy to catch Mark after the show, becouse mostly he jumps into the car immediately after the end of show and drives away.
At least we have only one possibility, that works ( or not ;D) - before the concert. He can stop and it seems he hasn't a big problem with it.
Go to hotel it's a littel bit "too much" for me. But some people do it and they say Mark was very kindly to them.

The time I got an autograph from Mark personally was in Glasgow 2001. It was after the show and probably because the band had an after-show party. I waited, along with about another dozen fans, until after midnight when they eventually came out the back door of the venue. Mark signed everyone's programmes etc. sitting in his BMW.
Maybe there is a better chance if there is an after-show party then, and if they aren't "doing a runner."

My husband got his autograph in a field at Goodwood in 2001 - climbing out of his car he said his back was aching. No-one else around!

Does anybody know in which hotel Mark and his band stays in Locarno, Switzerland for the Moon and Stars Festival?
Thanks :wave

Good chance thet will have a runner to another place.
And I don't think it's a good idea to stalk the guys at the hotels. It's their private time there.
Before or after the gig I see it as their working time and don't have problems with it.
If I come across MK or other bandmembers in cities I am in and it's not at the backstage-entrance before or after the show I never ask for an autograph. For me that's wrong time, wrong place.
-
I don't like the idea of looking for the musician hotel, especially for an autograph as I put a quite strong barrier between the public and the private life.
But I would have been pleased to be able to meet him for a brief moment, a simple "hi" nearby the venue, after all concert hall are his work office ;D

Best way to get autographs is to have GF send you two signed tourbooks by all bandmembers to your home address for free. You only have to wait for the postman. Still have one of the tour books somewhere in my bedroom, should look at it more often, really. ;D
Option two: Be at the right place at the right moment. Had to wait three hours before the Amsterdam KTGC showcase to get an autograph but it was worth the wait, was the first to meet MK and have my KTGC cover signed. Honestly, I don't think there is a recipe to get an autograph. It depends on so many things (size of the arena, weather, schedules, traffic) so basically there's not much you can do. I suggest when you succeed, you immediately buy a lottery ticket too as it's your lucky day. ;)
Anyway, it's a nice addition to a collection of albums. Meeting him is nice, but I personally don't see the 'kick' of having each album signed. I like his music, a nice conversation about music would be awesome (although I assume he has better things to do than talking to me). Having one (or in my case two) autographs and the memory of meeting him is enough. At this moment I wouldn't sit down in front of a venue to wait and get another autograph. :)
-
I agree localhero, there probably isn't a "recipe" to getting an autograph it depending on a whole series of happenings and just pure luck in the end.
As well as meeting him in Glasgow 2001, I also waited behind in London 2002 and got to see him but I just waited with some friends and wasn't really bothered about an autograph on that occasion. It was really just the atmosphere and company that kept me there.

Lol, thank you ;) I was 1 of them.. With Holaknopfler (Lars) and Dennis... 3 handsome guys from AMIT :-*

Judging by Guy and Richard's diaries and their obsession with food, my guess is that it's how quickly the band need to get to catering that decides whether they choose to stop for autograph hunters outside of the venue :lol
-
Next time I am standing in front of a venue I bring my own catering truck, so they can eat for free in return for a picture/autograph
