It's really a shame that they play at such a beautiful, historic and magnificent venue and don't do filming there - this SHOULD be a Blu-Ray!

Yes but its an easy comes easy goes thing, they went to the BBC to record a tv show that in broadcast last between 60 and 90 minutes, but they played a full concert of 120 minutes...

Its like the ANIL dvd.

Richie's birthday : setlist in St-Julien could be shortnened  :disbelief or be a crazy one (with SOS ?) ...
Also the day before there will be Tina Turner's wedding party in Zürich.
I can't imagine MK being around and not going at all. He managed to be up there that week-end...  :think
There was a show in Montreux in the pipeline :'( and it ended up with two shows in Basel/Zurich area  :-\ next  .

All went well until the 2nd solo and we had inaccurate playing, licks that just weren't coming off for him, too short a build up, unimaginative and the final twiddly bits weren't perfect either.  How was it "fantastic"!!! :)

"My Taormina"

Taormina is distant only 40 km from my home. But when started the presale of tickets, 10 months before the concert, I was not sure I can go and I gave up to "privileged" tickets. Only in May, I decided, and I got tickets for the steps unnumbered.
Yesterday, around 3:30 PM, under a scorching sun, I went to Taormina and at 4:30 I was out of the greek theater. I learned that at 17.30 the theater would be closed to visitors, and that would be mounted the barricades waiting for the concert. A walk along the beautiful  Taormina's Corso Umberto 1, crowded with tourists, an ice cream, and at 17.30 I was back in front of the theater. In front of me there were already about fifty people (not many thankfully). I waited patiently under the sun and I got to chat with my "neighbors". They were mostly young boys, with just some smattering on the DS and MK. The 2 hours of waiting have passed pleasantly enough, with the "highlight" when Ian Thomas approached the barriers, greeted us and also took some photos. Around 7:30 they opened the gates and there was a small race to try to occupy the most central seats. In the end it was not bad: quite central, with a great view of the stage and on the fairy-tale setting of the greek theater: the ancient ruins, the sea and Mount Etna in the background.

The environment was very quiet, ideal for following the concert (no rivers of beer!) Around me, many in their forties, but also youngs and a few gray hairs. The two hours waiting for the concert beginning are spent amiably, immersed in a stunning setting. Among my thoughts was the fact that it was the first time that Mark was playing in Taormina (and in this magnificent theater that oozes history), that yesterday the "boys" had rested and that this night they would stop to sleep again in Taormina (so no planes to take and no rush  :)). The premises were good. On the other hand in the last dates the setlist was a bit limited, but even this would not have disturbed my night.

At about 9:20 pm the funny PC (and I mean it affectionately: after last night I love him too  :)) has appeared on stage with a jacket (or shirt?) with the English flag and announced the beginning of the concert. There we go.
Mark - I thought - was in a good mood, greeted the audience and began with WII. Beautiful solo, with McC's violin, McG's flute and the "maestro" at the center of the stage with his red guitar. Following the excellent performances of CBC and Privateering. The band is "loose", in good spirits: it does not seem they have about sixty dates behind in the last 3 months. Begin the notes of F&S and I start to move me, and for the sweetness of the music and because I know it's the prelude to HFB, one of my favorites. And I'm not disappointed: the notes of the Gibson, Mark with his eyes closed: there is everything to be carried in the dream. Then the sweet IDUAD, reggae version, exciting.

At this point, Mark embraces again his red guitar: someone in the audience shouts "Sultans of Swiiiiiiing" Mark replied something smiling. A few seconds of waiting, the suspense grows ... begins IUTC  :). Pleasant! Then the sweet notes of RaJ and, as usual, in the final solo Mark again embraces the "red." I think: "now the Gibson and go with Sonny Liston". But Mark remains on stage without changing guitar, the tension rises, it becomes anxiety ............... Mark outlines a "Thank youuuuuu". It's the confirmation: after over a month of absence SOS is back! Great excitement: maybe not a perfect rendition but that does not matter in the slightest. Surely it was a welcome surprise, a gift to his many fans in Sicily. In the end, the usual standing ovation. Now, he embraces the Gibson and starts Sonny Liston: hoarse, scratchy, "dirty". I know I'm in the minority, but I consider this song a little masterpiece, a perfect harmony between music and text: dramatic, violent, pounding. Follows the sweet Haul away, the band intro and the enthralling PFP: I looked at the public and it was hard to see someone who does not "dance" sitting  :lol

Then Marbletown: I knew it was "long" but I must say that has slipped away quickly, pleasantly. When the music slowed, in mid-song, some applause started (not everyone knew it); then the "right" deserved applause, especially for John McC.
Silence! Begin the notes of Speedway: sublime! The peak when, during the final solo, to the play of lights on the stage, were added, in the background, behind the columns of the greek theater, the fireworks: of course it was accidental, but for me it was a sign, a tribute of the entire island to the "maestro", who wanted to add his notes to the two-thousand year history of the theater. A fairy tale context, unforgettable. But there is no time to catch breath, in the air resonates the "hiss" of TR. Then the Pensa, the solo: it's the apotheosis!

The band comes out in the applause of an enthusiastic audience. I count the tracks: 1,2,3 .... 15! For me, the concert could also end up here, I'm fully satisfied. But I expect at least one "encore". Then I think: "No plane to catch." You can dare with expectations. Back on stage: it is not SFA but the sweet S-LA. I'm now convinced: they will be 17! And in fact there is also SFA, which seemed to me particularly nice.

At the end Mark seems happy, even excited. Greets the audience with sweeping gestures and even comes close to the audience shaking a few hands. Now I'm sure he enjoyed it too.

The band gave us 2 hours of pure enjoyment: an unforgettable night! Thanks!

Hi all,

Thanks for doing what you do... the work you guys put in on this site is wonderful.  I LOVED this version of SOS... because I didn't think we would hear it again.  For me it was perfect... I would love to hear TOL played live again and I'm sure we could all pick faults in what they do and how they do it but I'd just love to hear it.  In case you wondered I'm a 'get a lifer' as Guy calls us... and I am so happy Mk wants to make more music and tour. This is why we are all here.  I do laugh at Guy's dismay at the people with mobile devices recording stuff... the hero's that do this allow me to visit versions of songs I love from places I will never get to and be part of it.  So thank you also my recording hero's!  I love SOS... it's back and that's all that matters.

Agree... Previous versions this tour were much better in the 2nd solo. He hasn't played it since 1 june, is that the reason? Lack of practice/performing?

I have to agree with dmg. But also have to say it has been heard far worse... So maybe MK REALLY lost interest in the song, half-arsed trying maybe, I play it once more, some kind of hate/love relation to that song... I would prefer him not to play it anymore if the looses the interest in the song.

I'm honestly amazed that a song quality can genuinely be based on what can only best described as terrible YouTube quality clips, sound wise.

This was certainly not the best of course but terrible?

Wait for a soundboard version.

It sounded fine for a S.H.I.T.E YouTube audio clip IMO.

A bad note?? What have we become? Lol ;-). I'll tell you what, I can bet they never even practiced the time since 1st June. In my opinion I think I'm actually just tired of the "original 4 piece" version these days

It's nothing about Knopfler's ability. Take a listen to recent versions of Speedway and telegraph road. Astoundingly technical and great.

I have listened to this version of SOS about 5 times now and I do honestly enjoy it very much.  True, it's not fantastic (as I said previously) or perfect, but what is perfection?  Sometimes improvisation might sound imperfect to one person, but it could be perfection to another's ears.  A lot of people rate the Milan 2013 version very highly - some have said it's the best ever, but what I heard was MK making very heavy weather of getting to the end and there seemed to be some rather iffy notes in there too - or could that have been improvisation and it passed me by?    :)

I listened to that Milan version earlier today after hearing this funnily enough and the difference is night and day.  Milan is full of inspired improvisation and the solo flows along nicely leading to something instead of jumping from one crisis to the next (so to speak).  Milan has a great solo.  This is just small bits and bobs that aren't really coming off all cobbled together that don't really amount to a whole.

Aren't we over-analizing this though.  It's only one performance of a song after all!

Ok let's troll :D
Anyway I find the highly praised 4-piece versions a bit dull...
I really miss the super-bad-ass versions of the OL, LOG, BIA and OES tour, with keyboards (yes, keyboards ! they bring power and volume nuances to the song !), sax break, even pedal steel... The Alchemy version, even without sax, is enraged, full of energy, keyboards give depth to it... the sax break of subsequent tours was a bit cheesy but sooooo cool.... even Jim's piano in 96 was great to me...
If it is to hear a 4-piece version I'd rather listen to the studio version - super clean, crystal clear, great...

maybe I don't get it Dutchessy....but in your opinion Marks played a great Sultans because of the fact that his guitar gear/setup malfunctioned ?
How great would he have played if his guitar was in perfect condition  :think

Changing regular notes when your guitar is a bit kaput isn't a clever thing to do and make no sense , if the guitar neck point in a 90 degrees
angle to the ground.......you may wanna bend a string to reach the proper note.

so I think he played the notes he wanted to play during the Milan gig.

We had this before and I am not sure if this is right. "Just fixing my guitar" was said by him after Sultans - I guess it was about the next guitar for Gator Blood - he noodles around a bit to try if everything is ok and then starts into Gator Blood. That's however how I got it. Could be wrong though.

About the over-analyzing. Even if we analyze Sultans to death - we are allowed  to! We are the die-hard-fans!  ;D It just shows how much we all love this song! The same as you can talk for hours, days, weeks about ONE football match or ONE football scene, we can talk about this masterpieces for, let's say, the next three years?  ;D

I think there's a lot to be said for the days before recordings were available!    You just went to a concert and if you enjoyed it that was fine, if you didn't, well, maybe next time will be better!   ::)

These days we have so many recording of all of the concerts and inevitably there are far too many opportunities for post-mortems, analysis and nit-picking!   However, I wouldn't like to be without the recordings either!    ;)

Perfectly put Val :) That was pretty much my point.... too much opportunity to analyse every version that comes out.... Upon listening to another version of the same song it sounds fine barring one note that is off. Knopfler and many other artists have made the same mistakes over all the years.

I would just add that I'm not entirely sure that Thomas' drumming is that good on Sultans.... Shame as every other song is brilliant from him imo.
