I wrote a little song and spliced a video
http://youtu.be/n0AD3fKKXdk
You may guess the lead chorus lyric has a touch of Gravy Train, and I "tried" to solo in the style of 'If I had You' (from the Dire Straits EP)
Sorry for the singing !! Couldn't convince my band singer to take the song seriously :(
-
Very nice indeed. Lovely tone you have (on guitar). :thumbsup
-
"On guitar" haha! Thanks mate :)
-
You and Dusty should do a duet album. Seriously. Cool stuff! 8) :thumbsup

Thanks LE. Tell Dustys people to contact my people and we'll see if we can work together....
Thanks for listening, the tremolo guitars in the chorus, the whole thing really, sounds much better on headphones or a stereo. Unfortunately, most people get their first listen through a phone or tablet, and I don't know how to mix/make that sound 'good'. I guess that's what the people at British Grove do ? :)
-
I like it :thumbsup
I like your tone/playing on guitar, but also the sung/spoken vocals ala JJ Cale /Mark in early years
I listened with headphones, and the mix sounds great !
I work at TV, and we always pay attention to what will be the result on a small TV, on small speakers, etc...
I worked some years ago in studio, and engineers have different speakers to make their mix : the "good" ones, and the "bad" ones.
but you are right, nowadays, they should consider smartphones to !

Cool song and nice videoclip :clap :lol
-
:thumbsup Nice work Fletch! We have some talented members here folks. :clap
-
Very smooth tone! Like it a lot! "the personal trainer kissing their ass! :clap :clap
And the little talk about sugar and skimmed milk reminded me of the industrial disease part with the doctor!
But really you have to know the similarities to even register as such.
-
Haha thanks guys!
I've a got a mates wife (who's quite a yummy mummy herself) keen to be in the vid, so I may re-do it with a bit more professionalism. Lots of fun, when you're in the mood.
-
We reshot the vid with a Supermodel (friends wife) and, importantly, got some real drums on the track, which makes a huge difference. Hope this embed link works !!

Edit - forgot to mention that one of my main aims (apart from trying to make a hit song like Clive James) was attempting to make the "sound" ok on phones & tablets, which is unfortunately how most people hear their first taste of anything. But also, it should sound super duper on headphones, cars and quality hifi systems too!
Sounding good on phones & tablets has always eluded me - I think the real drums, recorded in stereo via condensor microphones makes ALL the difference in getting that beat across.
So on a phone there`s almost no Bass, therefore half the beat vibe is gone :(
If any recording gurus (Ingo / JF / Dusty) have any tips i`m all ears!
Also if any of you want to make the song heard, please vote on Australias Triple J Unearthed

Don`t make me wait six months like MK had to with Sultans!!! ;)
- end of long Edit!

For some reason I still like the first version better! But maybe because it was playing in my PC speakers for quite some time! It was sort of a new Badges, posters, t-shirts and I like it very much. Give some time to let the new version grow in me!
-
Thanks VG, I much prefer real drums though, Pick Withers wasn't available unfortunately so I just used our bands drummer! :)
-
I just found now the time to listen to the 2nd version , and I agree with Vgonis, I prefer the 1st version.
the mimimal drum click fits more to the song IMHO, and the guitar sound/mix is more "relevant" in the 1st version. It has this JJ cale flavour, that I missed a bit in the 2nd version.
I agree with you though that real drums are most of a time better than a drum machine, but in this case, I prefer the machine :)
there are some examples where a drum machine fits more than real drums. It can make a special ambiance like e.g. on in the air tonight (before the real drums comes in)
Another example : I like very much the instrumental on Golden demos (the melody that later ended up on behind with the rent) : a drum machine, some synths and Mark's guitar, great atmopshere
as for mixing, I 'm not sure I'm the right person to give advices.
My recordings were all made through the Tonelab ST (used as a soundcard), no amps no mics, even the drums were trigged ("real" drums, with real drumhead but trigged, with no acoustic sound).
And I use headphones for mixing.
As for playing on a phone, I'd say it depends very much on the headphones.
the iPhone has a very low level , and the headphones are quite bad IMO, so I changed for better headphones to get more bass, more presence

Thx for the advice & time taken to listen / write :)
Still surprised at the drum machine preferences, but I agree whereby I LOVE jj Cale's call me the breeze type songs.
-
Ok Fletch, then you are maybe the right man to translate to me what JJ is mumbling during the drum intro of "Call Me The Breeze"? The line that starts with "If you want the old..." or something like that.. .never got it. This might be the right moment to enlighten me! :wave

"Here's one of the old rock roll favourites, one, two, one two three four..."
?? That's what I hear?
-
thanks, I always thought there was an additional line in the middle, something with "... down the ..."
I have it not here at the moment so I cannot check it myself. But thanks anyway! :D
EDIT:
One YouTuber commented on the same matter obviously and here is his suggestion:
"Here's one of your rock and roll favorites friend.....shuffle on down the broadway." One two one two three four...
THE coolest intro to a song ever. Even cooler than Money For Nothing I must say. Or Live Wire from AC/DC.. :thumbsup

You got me intrigued, because I did a cover of it once with my wife singing, but I did the intro...
Will have a close listen at home later :)
