Title: Classic Rock Show
Post by: superval99 on January 30, 2014, 12:19:56 PM
Don't know if anyone has seen this show, but they perform songs from some of the classic rock bands, including DS.  Here is Telegraph Road:

I like that. Actually I listened it from the start to the end, which never happened with The Straits, Strats, Starts, Rats, Stars, Stratas, etc.

I think the whole trouble of most cover-bands is OVER-thinking about MK songs. I can't explain this, but overthink is the right word.

These guys just really PLAYS THE SONG, without pretending anything, without overthink, but with concentration on their sound. I like that!

Yes they stick pretty close to the album  version, which works perfectly well, much better than almost anything from Mark since 2008.. this guitarist plays very good and unpretentious which I like very much. And like foma, watching this felt a lot better than all that AC/JS crap...

Didn't check: Do they have any other MK stuff in their programme?

I was very pleasantly surprised when I heard this version of TR.   It was played very close to the album version, but the guitarist didn't try to emulate MK either vocally or in mannerisms - it was just a good, honest rendition of TR.   I enjoyed it very much.     :)

I liked it that they ran the DS video as they performed!    :thumbsup

All of your posts I agree with (to an extent), especially the guitar sound on TR - but why do it?  If you are going to do a version perhaps your own interpretation is best;  at least you are showing some improvisation or that you are capable of rearranging a song.  To copy to the extent that the song is almost an exact replica is something I don't see the point in.  Is he just arrogantly saying "look everybody, I can do it too."

I know what you mean, dmg, but this is essentially a show, playing lots of bands' music as faithfully as possible to the albums. I don't think MK would have a problem with this, like he has with The Straits, because there doesn't seem to be a hidden agenda. In fact, he may even be amused by it    ;)

It's taken from the booklet of the CD Marbletown by Blue Highway. Here's the cover to which Mark refers

I've seen these guys and they are excellent musicians and do a very good show. They play TR very well, but there's just something wrong with singing Dire Straits in a "rawk!" voice! ;-)

Loved the music, hurt by the voice. Need a husky one, that more narrates than sings.

A very good version but still misses that extra something that Mark brings to the sound. Pretty good though :)

I enjoied. The guitar playing it's not the mirrored copy, the player misses some licks, but the overall version is very listenable.
