Hello
I
-
I have been contacted by Glenda Bogdanovs last year when she saw I used that photo on my site. She mentioned it was her who took that photo. I credited her for that on my site here;
http://www.oneverybootleg.nl/awards.htm#2009_-_PRS_for_Music_Heritage_Award_
She is the wife of Harry Bogdanovs who plays together with David Knopfler nowadays.
Hope this helps you.
Good luck,
Jeroen

Thank you Jeroen, very helpful!
Can you send me his mail, so I can ask her? PM, please.

I will check my dektop PC tomorrow, now only have access to my ipad.

awesome. how this comes together so quick...
-
Yes, AMIT knows more about MK and Mk-related stuff than MK, Guy or PC themselves it seems sometimes..

Why are those two people in front of the band so small in the Farrer House photo? Am I missing something?

Thanks for asking the question, twm. I must say I am also quite puzzled.

they are puppets or dolls I believe
I remember it was discussed on MKnews
-
I think they are two small children.

Yes, Dusty and Pottel. Fans from Minute number one..

So Dusty had all that blond hair when he was a wee boy? Must be a piece... :think
I always thought it was a young Ed Bicknell - the silver fox.
-
Yes, the silver fox came to mind, too. If they're children, they're dressed in very grown-up outfits for ones so very small.
Has nobody been there to check? Could there be a drainage ditch along the fence, for example?
-
There is a perspective issue with this picture, look at the people behind the DS. The band look very tall but the other people look too small in comparation.
-
Well at least we know one thing for sure - there was no Photoshop to con us back in those days; what we see is for real!
-
I was indeed blonde before my hair went the way of MK's. :)
-
maybe they are hobbits.... ;D
-
Perspective can be an issue but the people at the back don't worry me too much in terms of their height relative to the band. If those people were some way further back than the band, I would expect them to appear much smaller than the band in such a photo. On the other hand, the people at the front seem to be quite close to the band and therefore, if adults, should be much taller than they appear to be in the photo.
The position of the photographer may be a factor - more precisely, the height of the photographer. If the photographer was standing on a piece of ground or something else that made her roughly level with the band, then people between her and the band could seem to be smaller. Even if this were the case, though, I doubt those people would look quite as short as they do.
I still have a feeling that the land is lower just in front of the fence and that, in order to lean on the fence, those two people had to step down into some sort of gulley. That, coupled perhaps with the height of the grass, gives us a false impression.
If, in addition, they were young teenagers, dressed in an adult sort of way but not yet adult height, then I would suggest the seeming discrepancy in heights would be explained.
Where are Holmes and Watson when you need them?
-
Obviously that was a rehearsal and the guys thought of putting dolls as a joke audience! (at least the white haired one looks like one)
The technicians are sitting well insight and MK is laughing, the light is still intense, and John is on MKs left, and David on the right. (Yeap, doesn't make any sense, just noticing things.)
-
I think that vgonis is right :thumbsup
-
Who's that on the far left, behind the speaker? Looks like he may have a guitar... There's also an observer wearing a red shirt in the background.
Regarding the little men at the front, they may well be dolls because they're leaning against the railing and the silver haired boy's arms and legs look rather stiff!
-
I was in London too late for the first gig and too early for the nice memorial planks. But I went to see where MK was inspired! And apart from Cutty sark and southbound places, I also came upon Hope and anchor which is where the first live recording that was oublished by DS was recorded!
-
Sorry Vgonis, but thats not the Hope and Anchor where DS used to play. Its another place in North London, in Islington that looks very different.
-
I got excited that my underground/overground train from Heathrow was going to stop at Turnham Green when I was down for the shows last year but it was the only station it didn't stop at! I think it was being modernised. ::)
-
I never thought of dolls, though I am not entirely convinced. They look a little large for that - mannequins, perhaps _ but the one on the left does look a bit "wooden". The one on the right less so.
-
You are correct! Must have passed by there as well, but no photo. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Islington_hope_and_anchor.jpg

These little guys are such dedicated fans.

:lol :lol The one on the right looks like a girl to me. :) Hmmm, I think it's Ingrid! :think

If I didn't know better I wouldn't be surprised if it was Ingrid! Or maybe she's holding out on us...

Of course all the AMIT ladies are far too young to have been there. :think

I'm really poor using Photoshop. I never use it for my photos except to convert formats or crop them as I'm old fashioned and feel it's a con. Everyone has their opinion though.

1977??? Nope, couldn't be me, became fan in 1978. By the way I was white haired at that time, but not a boy ;-)
And first show was 1985 after I missed the 1983 one in Maaspoort (10 minutes walk from my house, was there from 3am to buy tickets and sold out before it was my turn)
-
But it could have been me. Just about the right size for my age, back then! ;D
-
The Piccadilly line from Heathrow does pass through Turnham Green station but I believe the trains only stop there in the mornings and evenings, not during the day. It is also on the District line and, as I understand it, those trains stop there more frequently.

Thanks for that. Jogs the memory that it was the Piccadilly line train I was on. Wonder if it was the eastbound train... :think
-
If travelling from Heathrow into the city, you were certainly eastbound. I used to take the Piccadilly line into town in my youth, before they built the Heathrow extension.

And I thought it was a nice touch that it was obviously photoshopped :)

Oh yeah, I didn't try to fool anyone for a minute. It was so badly done it was an extra laugh. Almost primitive! ;D

I was very disappointed. Didn't have experience with queueing at that time. I swore it would never happen again ..... and it didn't. From then on I spend a lot of nights in the cold to be sure I could buy a ticket for DS ;-)

Turnham Green... its mentioned on Junkie Doll but I never made the connection, about why its mentioned, what have to do with the song...

It's very close to his studio as well

Ingrid and Sweet Surrender--I'm no good at standing in cold wind. That's why I disappeared a couple of times at the gate in Oakland. I didn't have your stamina.
-
So, back to the Deptford photo. The audience member on our left has a strange posture. He or she looks as if he's leaning forward a bit and looking down toward the stage floor or ground. Odd. And he is wearing glasses or sunglasses, right? The shape of the hairstyle is very odd for a chid. Maybe MK_Live has heard something from the photographer by now.
-
I sent a PM to Julio with the email address of the woman who took the photograph, maybe Julio now can ask all questions you are interested in. I am not really interested to mail her for that to be honest.

Yes, and just got an answer, thanks J.
There is some info about the picture and the boys at the fence in your site, isnt it
-
You are welcome.
The only info I have on my site regarding this picture (awards section, PRS);
The photo of Dire Straits playing in front of the flat is an actual photo of that very first gig, 9th July 1977. Courtesy of Glenda Bogdanovs. Additional info from Glenda: the photo was taken during a local one day festival for local musicians. Dire Straits were on fairly early and the audience was very small. It didn't really swell until later in the afternoon when other local bands played. When David Knopfler saw this photo on Facebook, he wrote on 9th August 2010: "I'm trying to figure out where we'd tucked away our Fender Combos, because I didn't own that Marshall stack. And WEM columns in the PA system.. blimey! They were considered pretty bad even back in the 60s!" When someone asked David how many people turned out for that first gig and how many songs were played, David replied: "About 200 people I'd guess.. maybe more. Think we played for about an hour."
-
I found today something about this first Dire Straits concert (playing as Café Racers) that makes me think that the date could be wrong...
I read in several places that Squeeze also played in the Farrer House gardens, and in any Squeeze site you would find that on 26th June 1977 Squeeze played at Deptford, but there is nothing about the 9th of July...
Could it be that we had the date wrong for whatever the reason?
There is even a poster of it:

-
could well be. could we ask david?
-
Or maybe there were two festivals (26th June & 9th July) and Squeeze played only the first one? Not very logical because it's just 2 weeks apart from each other but could be of course. Isn't the date of 9th July not mentioned in the BIA tourbook? Would be silly if that is incorrect information.

I heard many times that Squeeze headlined the concert.
By the way there are many official dates that are wrong, I will explain about one legendary concert which is wrongly dated next week, when I have time to do it properly.

I sent an e-mail to Glenda Bogdanovs to ask her if she remember Squueze playing the same day she took that picture, depending on his answer I would e-mail John and David as well...
I also e-mailed the guy who made the Squeeze site to ask him about this. I will let you know if something comes clear from it...
