ok it's more for guitar freaks, so I posted it on Ingo's forum, but I thought it might interest some friends here too :
I was listening to Amsterdam (paradisio) 1978 yesterday and I noticed 3 unsual things :
1) on Single handed sailor, Mark seems to use the bridge PU during 2nd verse, rahter than bridge+middle as usual.
2) on News, Marks is using the tremolo arm harder than usual, during the song and at the end
3) on Follow me home, David is using the Phaser, like on Waterline
you know, I like this kind of details :)

As I know on Single Handed Sailor Mark used middle + neck PU for intro and then swithed to usual bridge + middle. He even have a little thing in the switcher to be able to switch it back to M + B faster, it just stops right on 4th position. Do you mean something unusual compared to this information?

If you look at the Rockpalast video (and I think he did the same on almost all other gigs from 79, at least it's what I hear on bootlegs) :
- intro/lead theme/ outro solo : neck PU, more likely the famous FS-1 which gives this fatter tone (more info on Ingo's blog : http://www.mk-guitar.com/2008/12/10/the-dimarzio-fs-1-pick-up-of-mark-knopflers-red-stratocaster/ (http://www.mk-guitar.com/2008/12/10/the-dimarzio-fs-1-pick-up-of-mark-knopflers-red-stratocaster/))
- verses : bridge + middle PU, aka 4th position, typical nasal sound (including the fact that it's a 3-way switchs, so he has to be careful to "stop" it to the in-between position)
but on amsterdam 78, during 2nd verse, I hear a typical bridge PU alone, aka 5th position, that's what I called "unsual" compared to other gigs where he used the 4th position

Totally unrelated, but the venue is called paradiso
