Hi!
John Illsey is releasing his new album Testing the Water this year. Seems that Guy is involved, in addition to Robbie McIntosh... Is the footage from British Grove?

Definitely! :thumbsup

Thanks for the news :wave

reading on John's website about his forthcoming tour...it seems he has jumped on the bandwagon of playing old DS songs similar to the leg-ends and the straits.... :disbelief

He's always been playing Straits songs, err, I mean DS songs on his solo tours.

What do you mean ???
In his previous mini tours he had always played DS songs, with more or les fortune, so he had not jumped from anywhere, he was there before The Straits or the DSLegends...
-
Plus hes a founder member so why shouldn't he?
-
I really enjoy his recent solo work. Laidback songs, nothing pretentious, not easy-listening but easy to listen to...
-
Never liked his voice when solo singing. Only background. Same goes with Guy by the way. I love the music of his both solo albums but have some trouble to get used to his singing especially on the second record.

-
It happens that i love both John and Guy's voices, mellow ones.
-
his 2 fisrt albums soudn a littlle bit dated 80ies imho, but I like very much streets of heaven
songs like Toe the line, I thought I saw it coming, Big Top, Foreign land are ones I would like to hear on a MK album, musicwise I mean
it has this laidback-on-the-road-american flavour I miss on late Mak's solo work
-
No Mark playing in this new album?

That's Robbie ;)

When God Made Time from the upcoming album. I really like it :) Listen at Classic Rock Magazine...

Like everything from JI, it is quite repetitive and weakly sung. But the instrumentation is nice. How I wish MK would produce a live-from-the-studio-promo-recording ONE SINGLE time... always that darned safety-net...

I agree about the repetitiveness but the singing to me sounds alright and relaxing. John is a beautiful artist and you can tell that some songs come from heart which is becoming a rare quality.
As for Knopfler doing a live-from-the-studio-promo-recording, yeah I wish he would throw some bones to us :)

John Illsley - Railway Tracks

I don't like John's singing capabilities so much either. Though I must say that Guy on the other hand is a great vocalist. I like the laidback sound/character of Mark's voice in general more then Guy's, but I must admit that technically Guy surely is a better vocalist.

nice!

I like his voice, and his songs, even they are not masterpieces, some of them are quite good, and some of the melodies are hunting. I have the melody from "Railway tracks" into my head, I cant stop singing it!
-
Vocal melody of "Railway Tracks" is kinda slow version of the song "The Letter" from The Box Tops.

yes you are right
I like very much the Joe Cocker version

I love The Letter.
Watch the swinging sixties audience go wild in this version from 1967.

The Box Tops version of The Letter is my favourite, but here is another very different interpretation by Eva Cassidy:

Dusty, the audience almost looks the same as any MK audience (apart from row 1) since 2005...

Do you mean in being stoned or in their reaction to the music!
Seriously though, I tend to agree and it's a lot to do with the pace of the set he plays these days. Some folk are almost nodding off, saying to the person next to them "wake me up when Sultans comes on!"

I have seen many strange guitar looks, specially from the sixties models, but I think this one beats them all :o

Anyone heard the new album yet?
I have. Was looking forward to it, cause I really liked the youtube songs.
Album is disappointing in that respect. Not as acoustic as on the youtube clips.
-
I went tonight to see John and he properly rocked. More than any MK outfit at the moment. Phil Palmer stood in the shadows mostly but stepped up to the task for mfn and sos.
-
Any picture or video?
-
Glad you enjoyed the show Banjo. Pity John's not coming north or I'd go to see him. Sounds good.
-
I was there too, it was a really good gig. I love the tone of John's bass and the setlist was a great balance of new and old. Some of his new songs, like Railway Tracks were really great rocking tunes and he had a good band behind him. Expresso Love was very well received.
They finished on Pink Floyd's Brick in the Wall - John's bass was perfect for this surprising and perfectly executed cover.
Venue was lovely and intimate. A great night.

I'd love to hear John's cover of Pink Floyd. Any YT videos ?

Did anyone go to the Glastonbury concert?

I didn't, but this guy did at this link:

"Fortunately Rupert Hawksley has been spending his time away from such pop nonsense and in the presence of some proper rock musicians. He also snapped a picture.
Making the trek up the muddy hill to the Acoustic Stage proved to be worth every precarious step. Who should I find there but Dire Straits's bassist John Illsley with his band playing Walk of Life. The crowd want more Dire Straits material but I think they're going to have to be patient. The man's got an album to promote after all!
John Illsley, in the words of Rupert Hawksley, "rocking like a boss"
-
Oh yes, and he also features at Number 2 of the Telegraphs best moments of Glastonbury 2014 here:

Thanks for that - very funny:
"Looking every bit like a rock n roll Bill Nighy, Illsley launched into a ferocious rendition of Sultans of Swing. The 65-year-old was so out of breath by the end, he was unable to speak
-
Hmm...Mark never exerts enough energy to get out of breath these days. :(
And thank goodness, this means that his heart is still in good nick :)
-
I said the Jazz Cafe gig was properly rocking. I went with quite low expectations but was proved completely wrong. I bet Glastonbury was even better.

I am in awe of what some of you guys can do! Listen to a recording and be able to name the guitar on it. I can identify a few (a very few) of the guitars MK uses, but some of you can probably recognize almost any ! Seriously! That is an awesome ability.

Pretty good version of SoS, I quite like the way John sings the DS songs.
-
Nice to see John rocking out on the bass. Don't know why he insisted on playing the guitar on Straits songs a few years ago.
Rocking version, like you said.
-
Oh, boy, does Phil Palmer suck.
